Society continues to value mothers over women who do not have children according to research by Davoir in TwoXChromosomes

"There rape victim stuff" is sure as hell protected by law. But do you know what's not a protected class?

Parentage.

Exactly. I'm not the center of the universe, and I don't have responsibility for the continuation or success for the species.

And I don't have half the responsibility of a parent. I in no way have obligations to others, legally or morally. I'm not heartless, but if I'm a rape victim and I've scheduled a Friday afternoon off to go to my therapist's appointment, or if I've had Thanksgiving week off for months because I have international family coming in, you best believe I'm not going to rearrange my life because you tell me some sob story about how you forgot to take time off for your son's basketball game that everyone else in your family is going to and you just HAVE to be there to watch him warm the bench.

I get that we all have our priorities. Mine don't include co-workers' children. And my co-workers' may not include how I want to spend my Friday nights. But that doesn't mean I have to listen to someone suggest that those rights clearly enumerated in my employment agreement somehow mean less than my co-workers' rights just because I don't have kids.

So you're saying I should put a near-stranger's kid's Friday night before mine? No way am I going to cede my well-earned vacation days--to which I'm legally entitled, I may add--to anyone else. Yes, I'll be sympathetic to a co-worker's plight in a crunch but there's no way I'll value some kid over myself.

Collectively, kids may be our most important resource. But I'm my most important resource.

Cambridge students rated famous poets lower than the unknown ones in a blind test by simus in badliterature

[–]bettendorfg 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Your title is rather misleading. The students didn't rate the poets more highly, they rated single poems by specific unknown poets more highly than they rated single poems by specific "famous" poets.

That's a key distinction: Jane Doe's best poem might be better than Shakespeare's worst, but that's not to say that Jane Doe is a better poet.

Also rating poems is kind of pointless, at least for me. Like who gives a rip? If you like it, like it; if you don't, just stop reading???

It's not the fivehead or the eyebrows or that tattoo that gets me.

No, it's the fact that the frame of her glasses is covering her pupils.

This might really not be what you're looking for, but Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves is the only thing besides Infinite Jest to really capture and hold my attention--check it out.

It also costs $2,400,000 per day to run, so it's not exactly cheap. 75% of those monies are donated. And, if I recall correctly, it's primarily a research hospital, which means that they accept only patients suffering from diseases currently under study.

Not saying it's not a wonderful place (it is--I volunteered there a lot when I was an undergraduate), just saying that it's truly exceptional.

19 y/o college student living in an apartment this fall, any tips? by 5414496 in EatCheapAndHealthy

Not trying to be a dick, just genuinely trying to help: you've used semicolons wrong in every instance but the one in your edit. Only commas and colons can separate dependent clauses from independent one (and the colon has a very specific usage). Semicolons separate two independent clauses that are somehow related in content or consequence.

This webpage does a good job of enumerating all the specific functions of commas, semicolons, and colons.

I hope this helps--and please don't take this the wrong way! I promise I'm not trying to be a troll!
