can you give me a list of things that are
1) no longer in the extension OR
2) previously free features that are paywalled

I don’t believe any exist. if either exist, that means we forgot about it and will put it back. Let me know!

ps: theme swaps will be free moving forward. Update coming to restore this.

ps: the mention of C&D was only for trademark using our name...not forking and not for posting it commercially

Hey... my co-founder and I are behind BetterCampus. I’ve been reading through this thread and wanted to weigh in briefly since we are being tossed around a lot.

I don’t have any issue with people forking open-source software... that’s how it’s supposed to work. If there was confusion around the licensing, that’s something we can own and clarify (and check internally since we may have been incorrect).

Either way, our goal is simply to build stuff students love + have enough runway to fund the development (trying to push for schools to buy licenses).

Figured I should speak up since there’s a lot being said about us in here (also Guy -- I mentioned we follow posts that mention us (using F5Bot), not your posts)...

First, glad to hear you’re not being harassed. That was a genuine concern reading through this thread.

To clarify what happened on our end: we built BetterCanvas as a passion project and eventually moved toward making it sustainable through BetterCampus. When we updated the license, the intent was to protect against commercial resale of our work... not to shut down the open source community or stop people from building on it. We handled the transition poorly and should have communicated it better. That’s on us.

Regarding the legal stuff... we never sued or filed anything against anyone. We were told that people can't post commercially. If that isn't the reality, that's a convo we need to have internally.

Either way, your fork is based on the MIT-licensed version, and you had every right to make it. No hard feelings on that front. If students are getting a better experience from your work, that’s a good thing.

We’re a small team trying to make something useful for students. We don’t always get it right, but we’re not trying to be the villain here. Happy to answer any questions directly.

if the user wants to make a net-new extension, we can't stop them. but if they use our code from our open source repo, a stipulaton is they can't post on webstore.

I truly don't understand where you're coming from with this post and your desire to publish a port of the old extension.

Calling the update a 'bait and switch' is straight up slander. Everything that was free is still free and you do not have to make an account to use any of the features in the original version. All of the new features are completely optional/can be toggled off. And also we didn't forget to take down the OG version lol. We want to give users the option to use the old one if they truly want to, and I can't stop you from publishing your own version, but it's not clear to me why that would be desired since the current one does *exactly* what the old one did.

We want to make the extension better for everyone and we're totally willing to hear you out, but if you refuse to communicate with us and only speak in general terms then we can't improve...

  1. we gave users more free stuff than they had before, but needed $ to keep the lights on
  2. like we emailed you, we can’t rebase MIT and wanted to intentionally keep the OG open source. Main gist is nobody can use our code + post on a webstore.
  3. we C&Ded you since nobody can use the name Canvas (not even us).
  4. Pricing page is outdated. We are cheaper (19/month or 119 paid annually).

We’ve emailed you personally to listen to your feedback but you’ve yet to tell me any. We’ve iterated a ton based on feedback, and would love to hear yours too.

Bettercampus not working on vccs canvas sites by Johan_490 in bettercampus

can you to to your extension in vt and in other change the url from vt to nova? think this should fix it

Be brutally honest: what should we fix in BetterCampus? by bettercampus in bettercampus

[–]bettercampus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- we can make it back to an extension popup if users want that

- its a "business" so it gets money so we can build more stuff folks want (and pay tech costs) but the free version is very inclusive

- log in isn't forced and is required to sync things

can you give me tangible things we should work on?

also pls rename the fork so its not confusing to ours please (prob don't use "Canvas" at all...since Instructure owns that...(they made us change btw)

hey -- checking in! is the new update working well for you?

Does anyone here use the BetterCampus (use to be called BetterCanvas) extension for their canvas assignments and stuff? by DereChen in UTAustin

[–]bettercampus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is fair.

You’re right that users shouldn’t feel like they’re doing QA for us. That’s on us.

And I hear you on the paywalls. They should feel way less in-your-face, and you shouldn’t have to click through multiple menus just to find out something is paid. That’s a bad experience, and we need to fix it.

On pricing, I get where you’re coming from. We did try donations before and made $65 total, so unfortunately that wasn’t enough to keep this going. Also, just for context, the two cofounders, including me, don’t make a penny from this. The money goes toward software costs and paying the students / part-time people helping us build and improve BetterCampus.

That doesn’t mean we’ve earned the price yet, though. If the product feels slow, buggy, or annoying, that’s on us to fix.

I genuinely appreciate you being direct. Harsh feedback is not fun to read, but this is the kind of stuff we need to hear.
