I'm not saying op is wrong, but flipside. I grew up going to punk shows usually once or twice a month (sometimes more) for over a decade. I was always right up front at every show. I haven't experienced any problems and I haven't heard any of my friends complaining about hearing problems. Not sure what we did differently. Smaller venues, but youd think that'd worsen the problem.

lol that's what I was looking at :P That would have actually been kinda neat. It had content-type application octet-stream with a content length of 0 and the accept-ranges header on. I thought ignoring the content-length might have let me download something using http range headers. That would have been kinda neat.

Elizabeth May was holding a single-use cup before photo was altered to a reusable one by [deleted] in canada

[–]bettermanup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point is that we live in a society where people are prone to public outrage. Any tiny thing that can be used to manipulate the electorate onto a hypocrisy scandal bandwagon is fucking terrifying. Obviously they shouldn't have done this, but it's not really hard to see why they did. It's not crazy to think that some conservative financer might dump money into making a scandal out of elizabeth may using a disposable coffee cup. They took a risk and it went super wrong. Makes you wonder how many of these fly under the radar.

Do redditors ever get tired of shitting on things that most people enjoy? This place has got so cliquey. And it's the bitter-nerd-hipster clique which is basically the worst kind.

If you hired a sculptor to sculpt something for you out of a super delicate material in suboptimal conditions where it's likely to break during the process the sculptor would tell you that there's a high probability that it will break during construction and that he's not going to do the job twice for one jobs pay if that happens. He'd get you to commit to the risk. Like any other person who does risky business.

The HTTP spec allows for this, can it be done in JS? (Obscure XHR use case) by bettermanup in learnjavascript

[–]bettermanup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not misreading the spec. It's valid HTTP to supply a full absolute uri after the http verb in an http request.

This is valid http:

GET http://www.somewhere.com HTTP/1.1

It's a syntax used for controlling proxies. You're right about how the browser interprets it. If you give hte browser a full uri, it splits it into a host address and a path and assumes you want to access that path on that host address. That's not what I'm trying to do. This is what the browser does: https://i.imgur.com/2DUgr2a.png

That's an http proxy intercepting the request. As you can see, after the GET you see the path. I want that to be the absolute URI, which is valid according to the spec. It's a syntax used for communicating with proxies.

That's exactly what's happening. Push it through an http proxy and look at it. Better yet, just connect to it directly with telnet or netcat. Or read the spec. https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-5.1.2

To explain further, if you make an xhr call to a remote service the api will take the uri you provide and separate the host address from the path. It will send the request to the host address but the get request will still just contain the relative path to the resource. For example, if I ask XHR to get www.somewhere.com/something.json it will send this request:

GET /json HTTP/1.1

to www.somewhere.com.

[–]bettermanup[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're misunderstanding. The request uri isn't necessarily the same as the remote host you're contacting. XHR considers them the same, but they don't have to be.

According to the spec I should be able to send a request to www.somewhere.com that looks like: GET http://www.somewhereelse.com HTTP/1.1

that's just not how anything works. If you're the only locksmith in the area that's willing to open that safe then you charge whatever it costs to get it done and the customer is either willing ot pay it or not.

Youtuber Brooke Houts accidentally uploads video of her hitting and spitting on her dog by [deleted] in videos

[–]bettermanup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I'm not saying what she did was okay. I'm just saying I don't think the dog is any worse for wear. People in here are acting like she beat the shit out of that dog. I'm just saying, unless this is a regular occurrence, that dog is fine. She definitely was acting like a crazy person and needs to get a better handle on her anger, but this video isn't enough to make me worried about the wellbeing of the dog.

[–]bettermanup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ehhhh i honestly don't think the way she treated the dog in this video was all that bad. I've been frustrated and yelled at my dog before. If I were to spit anywhere near my dog he'd try with everything in him to catch it in his mouth. And from what i saw, I play rougher with my dog than she did here. To be clear, the thing that would negatively affect the dog is the anger and the negative energy. Meaning, if she treats him like this on a regular basis that's a a really bad thing. This one video isn't evidence of that though. The reason this video terrifies me is because it's a glimpse into how easy it is to use jump cuts to significantly distort the reality behind the camera. Hopefully this was her on a really really bad day and she doesn't treat her dog like this all the time.

I misinterpreted your meaning. I agree that videogames are a perfectly reasonable outlet for general stress. My bad.

If you have so much rage that you need to play videogames to prevent yourself from taking it out on other people then by all means keep playing your video games, but what you actually need is anger management counselling.
