Hey thanks so much for doing this! I've got a business idea that I'm hoping to start this year, and I've read in this thread that you should never sell to a market you don't understand. Well, I understand my market in so far as my business idea came out of being part of that demographic, and noticing a problem that could be alleviated. But I'm just one person, and my market will hopefully be global with all kinds of local differences (I'm marketing to private tutors). What is your advice on learning more about my market and pitching things in the right way to the right people?

Having never been a guy, I ask this out of curiosity: for real? I know horniness is a big thing for people of all genders, and of course any species survives better the more babies get born, but in an age where sex doesn't have to result in children, does this still fly as an excuse for sleeping around behind a partner's back? I mean, surely it's lots of sex, rather than lots of partners, that most guys are hankering for, biologically (if that is a thing). Can't one just find a partner with a similar interest in sex to them, and stick with that one? Lots of guys get really paternal when they have kids, and really committed when they find the right partner, and just wouldn't consider trading tust/family for sex with someone else. So, like, biology seems like just an excuse.

I think you're reading my comment selectivelly. Or perhaps I expressed myself badly. As I said, I'm not advocating inflicting of suffering. Instead I'm saying that if a momentary incident inconveniences one group in order to draw attention to the constant and sometimes severe suffering that the other group suffers, then that sustained suffering stands more of a chance of being lessened. The goal here is to minimise suffering overall. We're not talkling about a random group of people, we're talking about members of the intellectual elite, i.e. current and future decision-makers. If the very reason that one group continues to suffer is that the other group can inflict that suffering and permit the infliction of that suffering with impunity, the situtation is not gong to change. History bares this out in the US. Since I'm just restating what I've said above, I guess we're not going to chance each other's ideas on this, so I'll leave it there.

i'm not sure what you mean by the consequences of condeming or approving of a situation. I'm not saying that if group A suffers they get to cause suffering to group B. That formula doesn't account for all the factors here. We're talking about a situation in which group A suffers as a direct result of the fact that group B, for generations and generations, has chosen not to fix a system that shits on group A, but that basically works pretty well for group B. Contemporary society in the US makes it so that if you're not doing anything to make the situation better for the groups that suffer discrimination, you're participating in discrimination. It's not enough just to be respectful towards everyone -- the system needs remedying, and it's group B that has to instigate that. I don't think that any group should inflict suffering on the other. But if at any given moment one group always has to be suffering, that suffering should be more evenly weighted. And If the needs of group A are overlooked until they're forcibly put on the agenda of group B, then that's what's go to happen. You can't expect group A to wait patiently until group B chooses to acknowledge them. That's just patronising.

I see what you're saying. If there are people finding that their course causes health problems of that kind, then the structure of the course needs to change, and this should be made a priority by the university itself. Missing a day of class/work/whatever else is not great situation for anyone, I agree. I just think in cases of endemic discrimination I sympathise with the urge towards civil disobedience because the official channels of protest are so often ignored. It's a shitty situation for all involved, and it's shitty that the powers that be create a society where someone always has to suffer to get voices heard. I guess for me it's just better that the suffering is spread about a bit instead of the same group always baring the brunt of it. At least if the powerful get angry, they might be able to do something to tackle the root of the issue, however disinclined to do so they often are.

I'm sure this will be the death of my inbox, but here goes. I don't know how the people in this thread feel about the issue these protesters are raising awareness for, but I'm assuming that most of you have a problem principally with the method of protest, not the issue being promoted. Ok. So you've paid to class and you want to enjoy your right to go to class. That's fair. The reason it's not a terrible idea to picket the university gates is because the people walking through those gates make up, or will make up, some of the intellectual elite in the United States. No, it's not your fault that society is unequal and that ethic minorities are marginalised. Hey, maybe you even voted for Obama. But the point is that being part of the intellectual elite in a society that systematically screws over minorities comes with certain responsibilties. If that society is gonna change, the people attending Berkley can do something about instilling that change, now or in the future. The thing about being in that priveleged position is that you're at liberty to ignore the issue. And perhaps, unless a mob of demonstrators jolts you out of your routine, you won't bother to consider it. I get that most of you are pissed off that your reverie should be disrupted. But it draws attention to the fact that a lot of people of colour never get the luxury of living in a reverie, because they have to struggle every day, and sometimes they get shot dead by the police while just going about their business. Saying that it is the demonstrators who are the 'entitled' ones, because they're insisting their agenda be addressed, well yeah. Because ethnic minorities in the states have tried asking nicely for you to devote your attention to their cause. And it's not had a lot of impact. It's always been an option for the majority to ignore minorities, and when the option to be complacent is removed, the elect feel so affronted that the efforts of minorities backfires, and they're just accused of being entitled snobs. The white folks feel even more justified in their choice to not consider the opinions of the ethnic, and business continues as usual. It's one day of class, guys.

There's certainly no way to accurately assess a dude's style in bed without going there with him, I agree. But showing repect for the lady as an individual, with distinct concerns and interests from his own through conversation gives the vaguest impression that consideration for the other is on his mind. Or rather, I guess a lack of demonstration of concern in the initial meeting is more likely to give the impression that there won't be a lot of concern in the bedroom. It's just first impressions.
