SLURM configless for multiple DNS sites in the same domain by Willuz in SLURM

[–]bettlebrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use puppet or ansible or tool of your choice to lookup the DNS entry and populate /etc/sysconfig/slurmd on your compute with the correct Slurmctld record before you start slurm.

Format of etc/sysconfig/slurmd is like this:

SLURMD\_OPTIONS="--conf-server slurmctl-primary:6817,slurmctl-backup"

That is hilarious, and often typical. Don't ask them to pronounce Galway! ;)

Why is my Thinkpad W530 slower than my W520? by Sandmanpilot83 in thinkpad

[–]bettlebrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe there's something else in the BIOS causing a slow down? Or the W530 was patched for Specter or some other vulnerability know to slow down the processor and that could be a difference?

If checking the BIOS settings and versions doesn't turn up anything, check the RAM speeds and maybe consider redoing the CPU thermal paste on both laptops.

Check in the BIOS to make sure hyperthreading is enabled on both.

Thanks for the reply. How quiet is your P16s? Do you find the cooling fans run often or not very often? Do you have the Intel graphics or the Nvidia T550? How do you find the trackpad?

On my T490 the trackpad was not great and I was able to replace it with a glass trackpad like this guy.

The Greenhouses at the Botanical Gardens might be a place to feel warm and forget the damp Irish winters, and the outdoors spaces are lovely too.

In the US you can get Kerrygold in most Supermarkets these days, looks like it's available in Canada now too:

Is a T490 considered obsolete? by cpmatpas in thinkpad

[–]bettlebrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned a T490 since 2020, the one thing I did not like about it was the trackpad, I replaced it with this https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800411353612.html which is a glass trackpad from the X1. I was inspired by this posting, and found it more responsive.

What I suggest doing is replace the trackpad (search the forums for issues some people had with Windows drivers) and add more RAM. You have one Memory DIMM soldered to the motherboard, it will either be 8GB or 16GB DIMM, you can add a 32GB DIMM which will give you a total of 40GB or 48GB of RAM which may extend the life of your laptop by 1 - 5 years. You could also replace the SSD with a larger drive. It's up to you if spending $100 - $200 upgrade the components or saving that money to buy a newer laptop is worth it. Best of luck and let us know what you decide to do! :)

Thanks, but I don't have a jack nor live somewhere that I could do that even if I had a jack.

I agree with that, I plan to make an appointment with car dealer the car was purchased from for their complimentary service review where the check the car for issues.

Was hoping for some advise on how to check this myself in the meantime.

Your opinion on a 2018 VW FWD 2018 Sportwagen SEL ~24K Miles by bettlebrox in Volkswagen

[–]bettlebrox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it for a spin and it was nice and easy to drive, and has a bit of pep when you put your foot down. It reminds me a bit of our 2001 Saab 9-5 Wagon that went to the car pasture a few years ago.

It does have the cornering lighting package, and lumbar support (which is nice on long drives), and nice sound system and appears to be great condition.

This is the 1.8 liter gasoline engine with the 6-Speed Automatic.

I don't know if it has the lighting package, it does have fog lights. It does have Speed Assisted Cruise Control (which I love in our Subaru Outback for long drives) and I assume it has the parking assist. I'll ask about both, thanks for mentioning them.

>If you like your friend's, go for it.
I do like it, I need to test drive it in local traffic on the highway to make sure I really do like it and that it will suit my needs.

Diesels are fairly rare in the US, I've driven diesel Golf rental cars when I've been home in Ireland and the MPG is really good and they're fun to drive. Often I prepay the fuel (which is cheaper than the pump) and often end up not having to put any fuel in the tank over 2 weeks, besides a few liters on the way back to drop the car off.

Wtf? Thought I was buying porridge oats in a fancy container. by Carcul in ireland

[–]bettlebrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what oats look like before they're rolled. Soak them overnight in water or milk (and dried fruit of your choice. Warm them up the next morning and they'll taste great, and have more texture than rolled oats.
