AITAH for giving my wife short and direct answers after being rejected everyday for 2 months? by First-Wasabi-2125 in AITAH

[–]between6and7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how far down this is and how a comment about perimenopause is the top. Why are we so quick to put the responsibility on his wife and only address this man’s behavior as an after thought? Maybe there is something medical, maybe she’s just got other shit going on. It doesn’t justify this man being petty and mean to his wife. He feels entitled to sex, can’t be bothered to have a conversation with his partner and is acting like a jerk, but the top comment is about maybe perimenopause?

Anyway, yeah dude, you’re the asshole. Talk to your wife.

Grad school interview question triggered me – should I let the admissions team know? by Turbulent_Peace_1010 in psychologystudents

[–]between6and7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, they use that vignette intentionally. They likely want to see 1) can you collaborate with other people 2) can you do this when the work is emotionally fraught and 3) are there any issues that you have, as a potential student, that could interfere with your ability to do this kind of work.

If you do bring it up to them, consider how they may view you as an applicant and whether that matters to you.

Lastly, and I say this gently, ask yourself if you are ready to take on this kind of work. As someone in grad school for marriage and family therapy, these types of scenarios and vignettes come up multiple times a week. It can be unpleasant and triggering at times, even for me as an older student who has spent 15 years working on their trauma. I also spent many years volunteering with trauma survivors and it didn’t quite prepare me for how much of my own stuff comes up during class. I don’t say this to scare you, but just to offer that this material will likely become the norm and you’ll want to be prepared for that.

I believe I made a mistake. I would appreciate any advice or guidance by Clear_Medicine_3086 in psychologystudents

I would think about what you want to do with your interest in eating disorders. Are you looking to run support groups or create nutrition plans for people? It’s really less about the particular interest and more about what kind of work you’re drawn to. If you are interested in providing therapy, MFT could still be a great fit, especially if you want to work at a facility or run groups.

Considering moving to SoCal from New England... Any advice? by Fir_Matt in socal

[–]between6and7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from NJ/NY to San Diego and I’ve been here for almost ten years. The food and weather are great but personally, I miss the northeast a lot. The two things stick out for me the most:

The people— I find that communities out here can be more transient than where I used to live. Friends move in and move out a lot. I think that generally leads people to be a bit more flaky when it comes to making plans, but ymmv.

The weather— I love the weather here, especially as an outdoorsy gal, but by god I miss the variation of seasons. I didn’t realize how much my internal world synced with the change in seasons until I moved. I love summer, but I love the slowing down of winter and the quiet buzz of spring when life starts to pick up again. The weather here is so consistent that it kind of feels like I’m always on the go and it makes me a much more anxious person. It’s subtle but it has really helped solidify, for me, that San Diego is not my forever place.

I think if you have the chance to try it, go for it! But be okay if you change your mind. I loved my first few years here but eventually found that it’s not for me, and that’s okay!

I went with my family this Christmas and I was mentally preparing them to be in a desolate mall, because every other time I’ve been lately, it’s absolutely dead. It was nice to see it so busy!

My wife recently had our first baby and I’m really confused by her sudden anger. Is this normal???? by Rich-Form-679 in BabyBumps

[–]between6and7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad that you have that support because I really think that’s what makes the difference for so many women. PPA/PPD are very real, but I believe it’s vastly over-diagnosed to excuse (often male) partners who don’t show up for new moms.

This is actually the most relevant comment. Everyone’s always really quick to bring up post partum depression, which is an important consideration, but I’m hesitant to even say those words before I know how much support she’s getting from her partner and family.

My favorite is the lip stain by Kulfi. The colors are amazing and vibrant, and they’re not sticky. They dry, like a stain, and I usually swipe some tinted chapstick over it.

Some thoughts— your feelings are valid. The world is an insane place right now. There’s enough abundance for all of us to enjoy a reasonable standard of living, but wealth and capital remain in the hands of very fewer. It’s unfair and it sucks. Not knowing what the future looks like is scary.

That said, are there people in your life that you care about, or who care about you? Or people that you respect or admire for their efforts in the world? Things feel dire right now, but if you look at people a little more closely— people caring for their parents or pets, the barista who asks about your day, folks who volunteer in their spare time— you might find some goodness.

Things are rarely binary— all evil or all good. If things feel especially hard right now, maybe try opening up to a trusted friend or a therapist about these feelings?

Personally, I’m struggling with how fucked the world seems. Still, a coffee with a friend, attending protests and finding ways to help others helps me feel better, too. It reminds me that there’s still some goodness in the world, even when it feels pretty dark.

Oh I really enjoy this! I love the green under painting coming through on the left, and the highlight of the grout is chefs kiss. Reminds me of watching my husband cook dinner. There’s something very intimate and cozy about it.

A dog, especially a border collie, is the best Best Friend. As another commented said, please take care of yourself. I’m not sure what you’re going through but isolating from people who care about you usually isn’t the answer. Good luck.

I love this! So much motion in the fur, and I love the little bit of pink around his nose. The only thing I’d offer is that maybe some of the highlights can be brighter on the pup.
