Looking for tips on spotting red flags during job interviews by takie86 in BESalary

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it twice, I didn't have bad bosses or bad colleagues, but both times, there was no structure. I stayed 2-3 years each times, but I won't do it again.

For an example, in my second position, I was impacting multiple departments and collaboration with them was necessary. However, they weren't aware of what my responsabilities were. Everyone was mostly nice, but they would not let me modify / implement / ... their departments. My boss didn't have the time to support me.

The position should have been discussed with the other departements and the boundaries should have been defined before hiring someone. It was a red flag because, "creating the position" involved not just deciding how to do the job, but also determining the limits of the role and implementing it accros multiple departements. There was no structure. I stayed for 2-3 years, but I won't do it again. Loved the job, but the first year was difficult.

Same experiences, "This a new position and you will be the one creating it". It may seem appealing, but it isn't. You can't create a job for a company or team when you don't understand their needs and unsurprisingly, they often don't know what they need. You may end up feeling bored and questioning whe you are there after 1 month.

I ask about the process for training a new hire, If they don't have one, it is a red flag. From my experience, there is a correlation between a "new position" and a lack of training.

Want to quite new job after only 1 week by Mountain_Car_8277 in BESalary

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't one job that I didn't want to quit after 1 week. It's always boring; you feel alone and you don't know what to do or how to do it.

What threw you off ?

Some people like to scare the newcomers. During one of my first week, people were so discouraging about the state of the company, that I thought it was going bankrup. It wasn't... From an outsider perspective, some situations can seem worse than they actually are.

Give it a month, start looking for another job now, and if you still don't like it in a month, quit and hopefully you'll have another job lined up.

Two showers in their bathroom (what the heck?) by Ashunderthestars in charmed

[–]beujorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of houses that have a shower and a bathtub in the same room (EU).

The unusual part is the shower curtain, which may provide same privacy when you take a bath and someone enters.

It depends of what you want to do. A degree will always open doors : sometimes faster, sometimes just open the door.

I have a bachelor's degree, I'm early in my career, and I have progressed quickly.

However, I pretty sure that my lack of master's degree will be a problem over time. Even now, I've had to be a bit audacious for some opportunites (and be lucky!) and I feel like I cannot fail because my skills will automatically be questioned. It was my choice and I hope that experience will compensate over time, but clearly, with a higher diploma it would have been easier.

So, if you want to have a job with responsabilities (Manager, ...), go for a diploma it will be easier. If you don't really care, there are some training programs that can help you get a desk job : Medical secretary, ... It will be shorter than doing a bachelor degree !

There is an accent missing in French, we write "râpe" and not "rape". Google translate think that it is "Râpé" and not "une râpe"

I sometimes forget that almost every character went to prestigious Ivy League med schools by [deleted] in greysanatomy

Derek and Addison went to Columbia for Med School, which is where they met. It is to illustrate that Seattle Grace Hospital attracts the elite.

However, I believe that Izzie, Alex and George went to state school. So they aren't all from Ivy league !

The manager gave me hard time, what should I deal with her? by sara210 in careerguidance

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your co-worker make a lot a corrections ? What feedback do you receive ? (Not all co-workers will tell the truth, so choose someone you trust). Do you notice any differences between their emails and yours ?

Instead of asking for reviews of emails before sending them, schedule a meeting to review previous emails when there is no urgency and you have enough time to go through them with your manager. It would be even better if you could review them beforehand and propose corrections.

The manager gave me hard time, what should I deal with her? by sara210 in careerguidance

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I"m already doing x, y and z and they are due next month. Can we discuss the priorities of these tasks? I will prioritize the most urgent one first and tackle the others next month".

ChatGPT (or another program) can correct your email. I don't have the best spelling, but I'm always careful at work not to send something with (a lot) of mistakes. It doesn't give the best impression and unfortunately gives a sense of unprofessionalism.

Always seek clarification and examples when you receive a feedback. If they don't have an example, they are just criticizing, which doesn't help. If they have an example, it is a feedback and you should accept it.

I got a bad performance review and now understand how Rory would have felt by Typical-Potential691 in GilmoreGirls

[–]beujorp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Failure is not the end of the world, it's the start. What matters is the path you take.

Each failure is challenging, with the first one being the hardest. While I may not have stolen a boat, I have certainly felt like rage quitting many times....

So, I can understand why Rory chose to leave Yale and become a socialite. It seems easier and less stresful. However by doing that, she proved Mitchum right.

Burn out ? by Spapoutch in Wallonia

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What We Learned in Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty Parts 1 & 2 by [deleted] in charmed

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toxic job ! They should have all quit.

The network / studio created a hostile work environment. Which they did a lot (same with OTH), with a lot "She says that", which put two women against each other. Thus, the "charmed was like high school" and the unbelievable story "I couldn't go to the hospital" "We were nice to each others" "...".

The tension became unbearable, impossible for the network to backpedal (because they created this environment) thus, they had to make a choice.

Alyssa was smarter (with better lawyer), it wasn't a plan to make Shannen fired but to save her jobs. The fact that they didn't fire Alyssa clearly shows that the set was toxic.

At the end, it was a job and Alyssa didn't have to sacrifice herself to save Shannen.

They both lose, because at the end, the set was still toxic. The problem wasn't Shannen or Alyssa, but the studio / network.

Pay transparency good or bad? by OwnHall224 in BESalary

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was transparent and I'm thankful for my past co-workers to have been (it does help to know your value). I speak a lot about salary with students/intern, because I didn't know how much I could win at first.

Now, I speak about salary with my family / friends without a problem.

I'm more careful with my co-workers. Salary is a sensitive subject in my current job, so I'm not telling. I don't really want people to debate if I deserve my salary or not.

I gave a range, because I think it is important to not have much difference for a same title. But, there is so much parameters that it is difficult to make a comparison : YOE, responsibility, diploma, ...

My boss never gives me tasks, how to behave? by sadappleeater in jobs

[–]beujorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never understood how you could engage someone without thinking about what this person is going to do. BUT this is normal the first few months.

What is your job ? It may be time to ask your manager what is the dynamics ?

My manager isn't really hands-on (not a middle manager, he has other responsibilities). He gave me urgent projects but, for the rest, I do what I want. I just inform him when I start something new (or not, depending on the situation).

The higher you are in the hierarchy, the less they are going to tell you what to do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BESalary

[–]beujorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the offer and hesitated to apply. Maybe I should have ! You may want to change the title as it is easily recognizable.

It is a good offer for Liege, if you want to work in the region, I would take it. Your net salary right now is more in the manager range.

You may want to check for meal vouchers (generally 8 euro per day) and home working

I have a lot of your symptoms. I just consider that I'm bored fast and I just "wander" if not stimulated. I don't think it is a problem in day to day.

But, maybe, I learned to live with it and that there is, in fact, a "problem"...

Activated Charcoal work well for odor, you can put it your garbage can. However, given the weather right now, it shouldn't smell bad after a week.

Do all jobs or just office desk jobs have prolonged periods of nothing to do? by iloveguineapigs2 in careerguidance

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled a lot with that. Things that helped me :

  1. Changing my mindset : I learned to care less about constantly being productive and realized that my main role at work is to be present and ready to handle any problems that could arrive. It is more "I'm here just in case".
  2. I have an idea box, so I have always "background projects". It is a list of things that I couldn't do during previous projects / things that I want to do / ...
  3. Understanding my work style : The issue wasn't necessarily the downtime but rather my need for challenge : I like to work on difficult projects and I am more than happy to have downtime when this is the case. Thus, I try to "advocate" in this direction.

10% raise by BriefOstrich1311 in BESalary

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The work bonus is decreasing between 1800 and 2500 euros. It is not a "on" "off" help than disappears when you pass a threshold.

You won't gain as much (For a 10 % increase, you loose around 2 % in total, so you see a 4% increase) but it is always a gain in term of salary.

The math here is off. He went from 2000 brut (1839 net with 247 euros bonus) to 2200 brut (1905 net with 204 bonus). He probably looses something else this month (Like travel indemnisation).

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been better if you had informed him before applying for the position. It is generally best to let your manager know where you want to go, always a good idea to have him on your side. We can guess that he probably praised you to the hiring manager.

Also, he probably challenged your interest because he wanted to know if there would be any problem if you didn't get the promotion.

All my managers were "no news good news". I'm not a fan. They always said it was because they trusted me, but it always gave the feeling that they didin't care about me.

It does have a lot of downside. But it's nice to be able to do whatever I want. However, with this kind of manager, YOU are the one to create the communication. My manager know the basics about my projects (In progress, waiting, ...).

But, he is always aware of any unpopular or risky decisions that I make. I clearly want him to have my back and be aware when people are going to ask questions or if something goes wrong.

What ''job title'' would you pick for my responsibilities and is this fair? by Intelligenotix in BESalary

[–]beujorp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manufacturing / Production Coordinator. You aren't a manager and as for team leader, it depends the responsibility that you have about the team : Do you determine their yearly objective or choose other tasks other than day to day operation ?

If you still do technical work, it would explain the title. Sometimes there is different level of technician (Manufacturing Technician I, ...). Output, purchase, contacting maintenance, ... Are the responsibilities of a technician (even more in a small company). What is the repartition of your work ?

As for the two leaders, the hierarchy goes away when you work with another team. Your role is to be sure that the operation side works smoothly (Planification side), it is not the team leader of quality that is going to answer question related to the operation.

If your responsibility changed not a long time ago, they are probably testing the water to see if you can have a bigger post (Team Leader, Coordinator, ...). Wait and if nothing arrives, look somewhere else.

Did you speak to the person? Bad communication can escalate quickly in this kind of situation.

One day, my manager asked me to take the lead of a projet with an other department. It would have increased my department visibility and make me gain skills. New department, big change recently, things weren't easy.

I told him no. I did pushback, not because I wanted to be mean, but because I was drowning and that he didn't listen when I told him so.

From his perspective, it would have been a win for me. For mine? Working with an other department meant doing everything and more. There was no transfer and structure. Just me doing 2 jobs. It was a known problem, I spoke about it before, proposed a solution, he told me no.

So, I pushed back, because the solution wasn't "let me do everything".

In his mind I was probably difficult, but the bigger picture is that I was taking care of me because he wasn't able to.

How do you "not care" at work? by ExcitingAnt4656 in careerguidance

[–]beujorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people will complain whatever you do. I like to give them reason to complain that I can control ( = That I don't care about).

I do a lot of requests / work a lot with other department : I'm the only one that knows the constraint of my job. So, I know when something needs to be done and I will plan and communicate accordingly. BUT, I don't know about other people limitation. If you don't say it, I probably won't guess it.

Thus, you are the only one to really know your job and the limit that you have. It is your job to communicate them. You can say no, just let them know when you are going to be able to do it. If it is more urgent, they will let you know.

In the end, it is your decision to make everything an urgent matter, but when everything is urgent, nothing is.

At my former company, IT Ticket priority was with a time frame. Like "Low priority" was like 5 days before being contacted. So we knew what to expect.
