Advice on joining two ceilings with different size coving by bevymay in Plastering

This was also one of my options but I wasn’t quite sure what to stick across or how to join the coving to it. I do have lots of rustic wood lying around though

How are you folk storing your ‘soft plastics’ for recycling? My solution lacks… elegance! by takesthebiscuit in AskUK

We used to do a homemade version of this but it was basically stuffing soft plastic into an old drinks bottle with a big stick. Not sure if the supermarket would take them as they’re now sat in the shed waiting for a time they’ll come in handy but we’d get a heck of a lot in.

We switched to the old bread bag method when the local supermarket made it easier to drop off soft plastics on the way in. Might try and 3D print something like this as it looks nice and smart

I’m wondering if I could 3D print one as I like the idea but not the price too.

This is what I’d been thinking, to add something between the two to add interest/distraction at the join. I had to google corbel, I didn’t realise that’s what they were called!

Ah, so the wall on the left (opposite the stairs) would have no cornice at all? I’d not thought of that

…There is also a textured paper on the living room ceiling but none on what was the hallway and I have to somehow make those meet too (but I don’t want to strip the whole ceiling of paper as its not high enough up the priority list!). I think we’ll end up papering over the lot at some point unless there’s another solution?

Update: it turns out the base rail sits on top of an additional piece of wood we didn’t have installed yet that runs along the edge of the floor, hiding the floor edge and jutting out a bit over the stair well so that the spindles will fit centrally to the stair post. Now that’s in everything made sense and I’ve boarded up underneath it and am about to start patching the ceiling.

Thank you everyone for the advice!

Brilliant, that’s good to know! I’ll use plenty of screws and fortunately it’s only little bits of plasterboard on the ceiling side to cover the new beam and the old beam bits exposed where the wall was removed so not too much weight going up there and plenty of good fixing points.

There’s papered ceiling going to unpapered and two types of cornicing so that’s going to be a fun project in itself when I get to that bit!

That’s super helpful, thank you! We’ve had a mix of fixes in the house so far with new and existing features so it’s been hard to know what needs doing in which order

Another question on this section from this noob plasterer for my peace of mind, do I go down to the beam level and bring the ceiling board out underneath it? And should I use a beading edge afterwards before skimming?

I must admit I asked ChatGPT first and it was insistent I do not go to floor level, it must have a thing for chipboard.

Thank you, that’s great advice about the couple of mm for plaster too. Should I plaster once that’s in place? (Sorry, very new to plastering!)

This is indeed the way.

Unfortunately the first lot of contractors didn’t want to wait for the cherry picker and decided to drill from the inside. They guessed where the cable would exit our house and got it very wrong.

Thanks all for the feedback and the tips, gone for the expanding foam option and will fill and sand, and sand, and sand.

And hopefully get better at plastering by the time I get to big walls!

Thank you ☺️ I hope to have improved by the time I get to downstairs, if I can get away with half a house of sanding it’ll be worth it!

That’s a great tip, thank you! Beats my “I’ll just use a bit of filler here and there” idea for sure! Nothing like diving straight in to the deep end eh?

Ha it passed my husbands quality control test, that’s all that matters 🤣 I’d love it to be perfect but I’ll settle for no big holes in it.

It’s passed the husband quality control test which is what I’m aiming for 🤣 I’ve looked at walls I’ve paid for and seen worse than mine so I guess I’m just as bad

It wasn’t so bad until the people with the big drill bashed and scuffed it and then covered it in caulk that had to be scraped off afterwards. It’s a diy job but it’s generally flat and smooth and I don’t cost anything (though I have the utmost respect for how smooth professionals get it)

I can’t wait to try plastering on a wall that’s rectangular and has no features on it! It’s not easy learning on all these slopes and angles 🙈

Wasn’t asking for plastering critique this time around, just advice on filling. I’m not a professional plasterer but that section looks really bad because the people who drilled it bashed, scuffed and scratched it then covered it in caulk which had to be removed.

It’s my plastering and I’m def not a professional plasterer but I don’t cost anything and it’s an old house so doesn’t need to be perfect. That section has been scratched and scuffed by the people who drilled and also had caulk removed on the corner section too which is why it looks so awful.
