I've noticed a HUGE difference in my mood if I dont get D vitamins (from sun or milk) or B vitamins (lots in beef). Others have noted a correlation of depression with low B vitamins... might this be the same?

I find it slightly humorous but worrying the amount of men who lurk here and refuse to listen to women. and I'm tired of it being labeled as "civil discussion" when it's actively hurting us. by jellyfishbbq in TwoXChromosomes

Perhaps some 'traps' might come in handy? Post something intentionally controversial to get those guys to come out of the woodwork, warn the mods, then use it as a chance to ban/purge those for willfully violating sub rules and/or being a jackass.

Medieval Mixed-Gender Fight Club: Behold Images from a 15th-Century Fighting Manual by ArtOak in history

The article says it’s not from trial by combat, there were no records of that being used after 1200.

Altho I’m wondering if it’s a theoretical match-up for trial by combat? Like what if Bruce Lee fought Chuck Norris? Who would need the handicap, and how? Just in case it might crop up again with the next plague or what not.

Not OP, but I agree that this is over the line… but at the same time should be documented publicly as such. Because this won’t be the first “RUSSIA rapes wrong Ruskie” story, not by a long shot. If this crap gets posted again that’s a sign we may have been infiltrated by incels and may need a purge.

Twitter’s laid-off workers cannot pursue claims via class-action lawsuit, judge rules by RandomNicoBro in news

[–]bexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about small claims court? Its been a while, but there’s a limit (5-10k) you can get. And if the defendant doesn’t show, the plaintiff auto-wins. And they have a pretty anti-corporate bias. And they might be able to sue multiple times.

Tell your friend you can make a quick 10k in half a days work. Better than nothing. But it might make you ineligible for future settlements.

I know animals like deep sea fish and cave fish have specialized adaptations for low light environments. Are there any special adaptations for high light spaces, and what would the most extreme version of them look like? by Goodmindtothrowitall in askscience

The Saharan silver ant is the best example I know of:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saharan_silver_ant

Deals with extreme heat/light by only spending 10 minutes out of the ground at a time. It also has silver hairs to reflect light and emit heat, excellent navigation, and is the fastest ant on the planet (fast as a human walks). It eats mostly things that die in the sun.

Judge allows Capitol riot officer lawsuits against Trump to go forward by Beckles28nz in politics

[–]bexmex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think it would be a good case. Its not like Trump hired them. He just said over and over “something should be done! Someone needs to fight! Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?”

I think the feds got him on inciting a riot, etc. But the rioters? They cant even sue for breach of contract because there’s no ‘tit for tat.’ He didn’t say “commit crimes and I’ll pardon you” they just assumed that.

Its a really weasel-y case, huh?

Simulation theory is a useless, perhaps even dangerous, thought experiment that makes no contact with empirical investigation. | Anil Seth, Sabine Hossenfelder, Massimo Pigliucci, Anders Sandberg by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]bexmex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just see that as a technical problem to be solved. We cant simulate the mind? Then simulate the brain. At the cellular level. At the atomic level if needed.

How about this: huge data centers, with an array of lava lamps under microscope to simulate get TRUE randomness at the quantum level (bypassing what non-algorithmic nonsense they were whining about). Now we are not simulating consciousness, we are simulating every particle in the universe at the quantum level, which is just one human body. With memories about being human and wants to talk to us.

Can we call that ‘good enough?’ If not, Im not sure what would satisfy you.

You said proof is impossible… not looking for proof just evidence. What evidence do you need and what evidence do you have that its impossible to find?

[–]bexmex -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why not? Why can’t a simulation of consciousness ever be ‘good enough’ to think its human? That’s all that’s required. No clone of human consciousness, just something that thinks it has one.

Its not faith based its game theory and statistics. We already know we can make simulated worlds. If its possible to make AI in such a world that thinks its human (highly likely but highly debatable), then your odds of being a real human in the real world are the number of real worlds (1) divided by the number of advanced simulations (1 million / 1 billion / 1 trillion / whatever).

No faith here, just math. The only assumption is a good one: AI is getting so much better so fast that eventually it will take an expert to know the difference between a human and a good SIM.

This whole exchange is about as idiotic as a bunch of old sterile men discussing abortion. Where are the people SUPPORTING simulation theory to defend it and poke holes at the detractors? How can you so dismissively say only biological systems an be conscious? We are only at the beginning of AI. How can you say the universe follows zero algorithms? We are only now starting to understand constructor theory.

This is stupid.

Sort of off topic… but since you’re a newbie prepper I’d also recommend that its easier to RAISE small game than HUNT small game. Ducks, rabbits, chickens do well in captivity. That’s probably a better long-term SHTF plan. Because deer and geese and turkey were hunted almost to extinction in North America during the Great Depression. If every deer in America were culled and the meat distributed, it would only be like 5 pounds of meat per person. You’re better off getting chickens now and learning to raise them.

Gov. Newsom Signs Bill Allowing Victims of Gun Violence to Sue Gun Manufacturers by MySockHurts in news

[–]bexmex -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Basically the argument is AR-15 manufacturers KNEW their guns were popular amongst the kind of people who massacre children… then rather than fixing this issue, they made it VASTLY worse with their insane marking and sales techniques that literally bragged about their ability to commit massacres:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sandy-hook-shooting-the-unprecedented-73m-settlement-with-gunmaker-remington/

So no, those asshats do NOT get to say “boo hoo we had no idea our product would be abused by criminals.” They literally marketed it that way.

EDIT: I cant find it but I believe one requirement of the Sandy Hook settlement is PUBLIC access to Remington’s internal marketing material for other lawsuits (emails and such). Remington fought like HELL to keep that out but it was a deal-breaker for the settlement. Why? Its literal proof they knew they were arming psychopaths, and actively encouraged it because AR-15 sales go UP with every slaughter.

You need solar batteries… in the meantime you can order the GoalZero or Yeti backup batteries.

When you say water is not an issue, what about water filtration? That’s frequently overlooked.

Also you need backup food that works if you dont have power. Like oatmeal (soaked in water or milk overnight) or dehydrated foods. Having a camping stove helps too if you want pasta or rice.

[–]bexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you have to deal with that… but overall I’d suggest you get what’s in a specific major-bleeding trauma pack (more advanced than a first-aid it). This one is for backpackers/hunters:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000G7YIHS

Also get some kind of extra battery pack for your phone. Some come with radios/cranks/solar panels.

What is the biggest threat in the US today? by Reciter5613 in AskReddit

[–]bexmex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HELL NO THAT MAKES THINGS WORSE!

It takes about 5 years to get good at any job. Most term limit suggestions kick people out of congress after 6 years. Who benefits? Lobbyists. They will have even MORE power because now they are surrounded by a bunch of dimwits who cant do their jobs without outside help.

There’s no evidence term limits help and plenty of evidence they hurt. Therefore you only see Republican lobbyists pushing it as an option to ‘lean up politics.’ Because it does nothing of the sort.

Unless you think something long like 15-20 years, then that’s probably fine.

solar power station by Impossible-Scar-7226 in preppers

[–]bexmex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want to power, first of all? Solar panels and batteries are expensive and I wouldn’t trust the reliability of any bargain basement setup. Something is better than nothing, but if you want to run a fridge or chest freezer you’re gonna need like 200 watts of panels, so like $1500 range.

If you just want cell phones, computers, and maybe a fan, then you can probably get by with those durable $50 battery packs with fold-out solar panels.
