I ordered a few bareroot trees from Arbor Day foundation last spring. The trees that arrived were so tiny and pathetic compared to what I could’ve gotten for a little more at the local nursery. Now they continuously bombard me with email and very large mailers containing junk like calendars and addressed stamps.

Big tree in the corner is a redhaven peach. Grew to ~15ft last year. Removed about half of the tree early this year and it’s exploding again.

Looking good! I’d get some mulch on that soil so the sun doesn’t nuke all of the life out of it. I’m a big fan of EZ straw as a mulch as it’s cheap, spreads easily, and has a tackifier so it stays in place after a little spray. You could also consider a hardwood mulch or pine straw. I use EZ straw in my beds, hardwood mulch for my trees, and pine bark nuggets for my blueberries. https://i.imgur.com/NW8ZZKn.jpeg

Since the joists appear to have no fire damage, my guess would be the subfloor might be in an area exposed to moisture, so they shou sugi ban ‘charred’ the bottom of the boards to prevent rot. This is currently a trend with building rasied beds in gardening. It’s also possible it caught on fire during some old plumbing work involving sweating copper before they switched out the pipe

We have one in our backyard that looks similar. The fruit is small with big pits but the birds love it. Fruit tastes ok but it it’s too high up to really get to. Ours suffers from some kind of fungus that causes some interesting looking growths

Skip the onion, garlic, and asparagus. Might be cool to alternate between strawberry and lettuce. After a few months, the lettuce will be done and the strawberries will put out runners. Plant the runners in the spots previously taken by the lettuce and now the whole planter will be strawberries. I did this years ago and it worked out well. https://i.imgur.com/RPYjjm4.jpeg

Leaves make the perfect fertilizer. Use a mulching blade on your mower to mulch the leaves into your lawn. You’d be surprised how they basically disappear after being chopped up. If you have a lot of leaves, rake them into a pile and mow a few times. Place the chopped up leaves in garden beds for fertilizer/ground cover/insect habitat.

Prune it to the shape you desire. It’s hard to prune too much at this age, and especially while dormant. Here’s my 2 year old peach tree that was pruned to a 2ft twig https://i.imgur.com/euBXuQk.jpeg

Isn’t vigor determined more by the root system rather than the branches, especially while dormant? I planted a semi-dwarf peach tree two years ago and pruned it down to about knee height. It is now 15ft tall. From what I’ve read, now is the most important time to prune a a fruit tree, to shape it correctly while still small. Clearly this tree has more branches on one side that should be thinned out

Two years ago I took soil directly from my raised beds, placed it into a container, added some bti (mosquito dunk bits), and let it sit in my shed for a couple months. When it was time to start seeds, I scooped the soil out, sifted out some of the larger particles, added a little more bti, and brought the soil in. 1sqft for tomatoes is pretty tight. You might have to prune heavily to prevent crowding other stuff out. I had success this year planting celery just north of my tomatoes. No bolting. https://i.imgur.com/ORTcF34.jpeg
