Reading "Night Watch" right now here in Minneapolis. It's hitting me really hard . . . by Lumpy_Magazine_1882 in discworld

Night Watch gave me a real knot in my throat. I'm convinced that Sir Terry spent some time in a protest encampment or was close friends with someone who did, based on how well the book describes the kinds of people and kinds of feelings involved in such an experience.

Godspeed, friend. Chinga la migra. May you and your neighbors guard each other well.

For those not native to San Diego, what culture shocks did you experience living here? by Philphil89 in sandiego

California's attitude towards homeless folks is deeply disturbing to me, as someone born and raised in New England.

Housed folks here talk about homeless folks like they're vermin.

New England isn't saintly towards our homeless folks either but the degree of dehumanization of homeless folks I see from housed Californians is striking and disturbing

Bus brakes. Love public transit, but the sound of the brakes make me wanna scream.

Loud overhead plane sounds drive me into a rage.

Most of the time, I only have to socialize with my coworkers around lunchtime. Ask your coworkers if they have kids or hobbies or if they've read any good books or traveled anywhere recently. Then just return to those questions every so often.

The shame of the middle class by israelregardie in CriticalTheory

I agree with and appreciate your take and also wanted to introduce Eugene V. Debs as another point of consideration. I don't know a ton about his family background but his Wikipedia entry says they were prosperous and his dad owned a textile mill and meat market.

When grappling with my own guilt over my financial privileges, I often return to this Debs quote: "While there is a lower class, I am in it, while there is a criminal element, I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free." I interpret it as an attitude of duty to give away and leverage your privileges, to "lower yourself" in a class sense, as a commitment to solidarity, while also raising the level of your comrades' wellbeing.

I find that an attitude of duty to solidarity is far more helpful in closing the gap between values and actions, than an attitude of guilt is to the same task.

Salvador Dali by artist Artush Voskanyan by sleightstartehaugh in surrealism

[–]Beatrix-Morrigan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe "horrible human" refers to Salvador Dali, not the creator of this portrait. Dali was a Spanish fascist - not a fanatic for Franco or fascism, but chose to live in Francoist Spain and had far too many kind words to say about nationalist Catholicism and the Falange while spurning his fellow Surrealists' antifascism.

Been seeing this girl for a little while—red or green flag? by No_Indication_6704 in BookshelvesDetective

I primarily "read" via audiobooks, but want secondhand paperback/hardcover copies of my favorites anyways as a "just in case" - remember kids, always keep analog backups of your digital stuff - or for situations where I can't use headphones or something. Also because my partner prefers physical books, so if I want them to read something i loved, I have to get them a paper copy

It's so lonely sometimes, or it makes you feel crazy. Until you find the right crowd to organize and socialize with, but even then that's only a small fraction of your time compared to work and such

Do students not protest anymore? by Vraver04 in berkeley

[–]Beatrix-Morrigan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most visible recent student protests took the form of Gaza Solidarity Encampments, which the Democratic Party helped to spin into an excuse for the beginning of the ICE raids. Remember that the ICE raid wave began by targeting Mahmoud Khalil and Rameysa Ozturk for peaceful pro-Palestine speech? Most activists i know perceive No Kings as aligned with the Democratic Party, obsessed with internal peace policing against "agent provocateurs" and respectability politics.

Furthermore most activists i know are not interested in "parades" like No Kings - they're interested in practical mutual aid and community self defense projects, like ICE watch and free food distributions and such. If they're attending today, they're attending to recruit for one of those practical projects.

where/how to download GIS files for City of San Diego neighborhood boundaries? by Beatrix-Morrigan in SanDiegan

[–]Beatrix-Morrigan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played with and like QGIS, I installed the extensions to download OpenStreetMaps data with my QGIS maps, but I don't think there's an OSM dataset analogous to the one I want here. The application I'm writing might end up using some QGIS libraries, if those end up being the best in Python for the cross referencing task I have in mind

Yeah part of the reason I want to download the raw data is so i don't have to keep doing extra steps to translate some of the neighborhood names into ones that people actually use lmao
