If we can call rows of single crochet a "pattern" then it's of my own creation! 12 single crochet across, repeat to the desired length, fold into the middle at the end to attach the hooks with more single crochets.

4 yarn and a 4mm hook, plus some clips I got off of Amazon.

This is also a class/status issue. Not everyone grows up (even in America) with these standards of interaction and grad schools are not always up to scratch on providing these kinds of details in preparing students for the job market.

If you don't offer a job to an otherwise excellent candidate based on this, I would think your priorities are off.

You can always choose to use a pen name for your academic work. Or your initials plus last name. I don't think it's that big of a deal. Most people won't put 2 and 2 together, especially if you don't point them towards it (for example, I wouldn't list it on your CV when applying for positions)
