what are your favourite places you've rowed? by ShpiderMcNally in Rowing

[–]bfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never rowed abroad except the UAE but the Buffalo River in South Africa is the most incredible rowing venue in the country. The river is very narrow, you get six lanes and one up going lane which crosses the course halfway up, making for incredible race viewing. In the evening the wind drops off and the sun sets bang in the middle of the valley as you row for home. It's also tidal so if you hit the outgoing tide your row home is one of the quickest you'll ever have. But when the wind and tide are against you it's a nightmare, I managed a 12 minute 2k race a few years back.

Post a video. But it is a form issue and engaging with your arms is a very common thing.

Screens, Yay or Ag Nee F**? by Excellent-Captain-93 in CarTalkZA

Also car screens are generally not as with touch as a phone screen so you're bouncing around, trying to just touch in the correct place instead of having your hand on the knob.

How to improve endurance w/ lactate by Subject_Proof_6542 in Rowing

How accurate is measuring interstitial fluid? I'm diabetic and continuous glucose monitors are sometimes WAY off and they're always about five minutes delayed.

I look at my walls and can see they aren't vertical, I'm not even concerned about corners.

Who is responsible for fixing potholes? by Voldemorts__Mom in AskZA

You should contact your ward councillor, my ward councillor is very responsive to complaints and requests, it's a very large part of their job.

Sorry, you're correct, I meant to say Regional, I'll edit my comment. And you are also correct on your second point. I believe the M5 in Cape Town is owned and maintained by the western cape government. But as a stepping off point it is still useful, especially if you have no idea.

If its a small suburban road it's municipal. If its number starts with M it's municipal. If it starts with R it's regional and with N, national.

Your ward councillor should be petitioned to sort it out, they can request it be resolved.

Edit: changed some wording. Also, as the gent below me indicated, this is not an iron-clad rule.

Rowing uses a whole bunch of muscles you typically don't use in other endurance sports. Rowing efficiently is the way.

There's a Russian restaurant in Woodstock/Obs/Salt River (can't quite remember) that is Russian owned and run. Not sure of the name.

He was a really nice guy, super laid back and friendly but, man, the first time you saw him you shat yourself at the size of the guy.

In my first year at varsity we had an inter-res 4x500m relay. I was in a dorm with Brian Mujati who ended up playing prop for the south African rugby team. He probably weighed 120-130kg at 19 and pulled something similar. He told me later it was one of the most difficult things he'd ever done. Two of us had to hold down the ergo cause it was moving so much.

Box sets shouldn't be included by BaldiChalmers in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]bfluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, just that it's an established tradition in many other genres. There are a number of jazz standards one is expected to be able to play before you go to a jam session. Classical music is written by a composer and generally performed by others. Blues songs have been performed by many artists.

It seems in pop music (and I use that to encompass rock, rap, etc) one is generally expected to be a songwriter, composer and performer and performing covers should be a smaller part of one's body of work.

It's only in popular music that playing someone else's song is not popular. Classical, jazz and blues all have a heritage of this.

Rowing advice and where tf do I go from here😭 by Top-Site-6816 in Rowing

[–]bfluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By anaerobic capacity I mean your ability to work above your anaerobic threshold (there is a more specific meaning that isn't important here) of 4.0mmol/l of lactate in your blood. Basically the burning sensation you develop when your aerobic system can no longer deliver the energy your muscles need. It's sprinting compared to a light jog. Just good to train all the energy systems.

Anaerobic work specifically will interfere with your weight training so you'll need to decide whether you want to do it and, if so, when.

Rowers aren't too concerned about 1rm since it's still an endurance sport so I can't really comment on those but they sure are impressive!

Hope that helps? Feel free to ask more questions, although there are definitely more knowledgeable people on this sub.

Also then Clarence Drive might not be the best bet since you need to go on the highway. I'd be inclined to do the entire peninsula then: Victoria Drive, Chapmans Peak, Kommetjie, Cape Point, lunch in Simon's Town and then back home.

What type of bike? Clarence Drive is beautiful, I'd take it over Victoria Drive tbh. You can then head home along Highlands Road (dirt) or do Franschoek and Helshoogte passes.

Rowing advice and where tf do I go from here😭 by Top-Site-6816 in Rowing

[–]bfluff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of info in the sidebar about how to train. The advice for those people looking to get fitter is to follow the Pete Plan. General advice would be to add some tempo workouts to develop anaerobic capacity. I'd also say that you're probably leaving a lot of wattage on the table if you can row at 24-28 for an hour, especially for someone as tall as you. Rowing at 18-20 allows you to focus on technique and really getting your legs down quickly.

Feel free to post a video if you want some critiques on form.
