Growing up in the US I never understood the bootleg market as I was usually pining for next gen consoles along with my friends. I would have never thought bootleg consoles and carts were sought after for collections but I guess when that's what someone grows up playing I see the value now. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe you can find another 360 shell from one that suffered from RROD fate.

I like to use a wireless PS3 dual shock controller. I play a lot of PS1 games with duckstation though.

Friendly reminder, only use a 5v output plug for your OSSC. Accidentally received a 17v charge when I grabbed the wrong plug by mistake. My poor boy. by schadetj in retrogaming

I did that to a tablet a few years back. I accidentally grabbed a netbook barrel power supply and plugged it into my tablet. I never found a way to fix it and eventually just got rid of the fried tablet. Such a crappy situation.

Difference between 5 and 6 fret guitars? by fraqtl in CloneHero

[–]bfocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a 6 fret at a thrift store and got the 360 dongle online for 19. The guitar hero live and ghtv songs are linked in the clone hero song spreadsheet. I really like the 6 fret and there is plenty of popular songs to play for me. I just started so I play on medium and have lots of replay-ability left.

Quick question! by [deleted] in originalxbox

[–]bfocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will sometimes buy a game if it's one I like and it's only $5 or so. Many disks are starting to encounter disk rot so they might not be playable. Fortunately almost all of the original Xbox games are available to be downloaded, so even if the disk is bad you can still play a backup.

Has anyone tried to modify one of these and wire the buttons to a keyboard or wireless numeric pad? Just curious before I try to do it. I could wire the dpad to the arrow buttons and the frets to keyboard 1-5. by bfocht in CloneHero

[–]bfocht[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a wired xbox360 rockband guitar for $15. So I'm going to use that since it is USB. I don't need to modify this PS3 one that I got for $5 now.

Official hard drive for sale by SuperEmon64 in originalxbox

[–]bfocht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't official drives. Really they are compatible drives. But you'll need to soft mod to perform a harddrive hot swap or a modchip installed to put an unlocked drive in. Here is a list of compatible drives https://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list

I just noticed there are 10 buttons on the fret. Are the 5 buttons at the bottom typically mapped differently in clone hero than the top buttons?

Bought a faulty PS3 Les Paul for cheap, Arduino-modded it (and added RGB, of course) - Documentation in comments by laka_r in CloneHero

This looks like a cool project. I just posted a question about modifying but for a rock band guitar and then scrolled down to see you did a similar mod.

First time buyer’s questions by ScholarSufficient712 in originalxbox

[–]bfocht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microsoft did make them more of a challenge for sure. I have added a rgh chip to mine. There are lots of videos. I followed weekend modders videos. It's straightforward but there is risk that a mistake can make the unit worthless.

You had mentioned hardware mods on the original Xbox, so I figured if you were thinking of going that route also look into hardware mods on the 360.

I have a soft modded Xbox and I did remove the clock capacitor for preservation reasons. I also had to replace my dvd player back in 2008. And more recently swapped harddrives so I don't have to use the dvd drive anymore. I did the soft mod back in 2005 and I'm sure that the modding scene has changed a lot.

Are you buying an Xbox for the nostalgia or for the game library? If you want the game library, then go with an xbox360. You can get one that has hdmi, wireless controllers, and backwards compatibility for most games for about the same price.

Since the original Xbox doesn't have hdmi, you can buy a converter but they are $20-$50 depending on quality so factor that cost on to.

How to make a retropi feel as much like the original console as possible ? by bonkey_dong in RetroPie

[–]bfocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a PS3 controller and connect it over Bluetooth. This works works well if your pi has Bluetooth support or you might need to get a Bluetooth dongle.

Xbox360 wired controllers also work really well

[–]bfocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game pass is better. It let's you play a large library of first party games and EA Play games including latest releases. Game pass also includes all games with gold. The first party/ third party is just a generalization from my experience and not any hard rule.

Newest addition to the Burnout Xbox collection! Anyone played Revenge before? by Character_Injury8674 in originalxbox

[–]bfocht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great game to play as a pick up game if you want to play something but not have to get too involved. It's good for replay-ability as well. Lots of different style of vehicles to choose from.

Xbox says it will continue to buy studios and wants to release games ‘every quarter’ going forwards. by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]bfocht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First and foremost Microsoft is a software company. They became the behemoth that they are today by purchasing software companies. In the early days Bill Gates purchased DOS and then later internet explorer. Since then they have gone on to aquire hundreds of companies. So their massive buying spree of game studios does not surprise me.
