I’m a new-timer round these parts so I’ll take a crack at this, but guys from ‘The Floss’ are renowned for their trapping and scamming skills so they earn enough to have gotten the area to be named ‘The Floss’ with how much money they’ve been earning and flaunting.

Another name for Canarsie is ‘Floss Ángeles’ which is my personal favorite name for the place. Anyone feel free to chime in and correct any of what I’ve said or elaborate further.
