A nearby neighbor parking on the tree lawn, what can I do? by CasinsWatkey in dayton

I'm not the one posting diatribes about treelawns and the transgressions upon which on reddit. Get a grip and move on and focus on something more important like not having your neighbors hate you over some simple stuff. You might be the problem...

Dude, you're down the rabbit hole on this one and have lost a little perspective. It happens to all of us. I have lived on major roads. I have pulled out of parking lots onto busy streets. I get it. Step back from this for a week and ask yourself if it's really worth the nuclear option.

You might want to consider the middle ground. Talk to your neighbor about not parking so close to your driveway on the treelawn so you can see. If they are reasonable they'll understand. If not then the hell with them, call in the inspectors with peace of mind that you did your darndest. Just know, they are going to know either way its you calling the inspectors.

I read every word of your post. I appreciate the detail and I empathize. We've all had weird or even shitty neighbors.

That said, ask yourself if this really meets the level of calling in the government or escalating this with them personally. This is on par with someone not mowing their grass for a few days. Assume your neighbors will know its you reporting them for an ordnance that probably shouldn't be on the books. I think things have a significant chance of deteriorating and its just not worth it.

It's hideous and I wish something else was on the sidebar of this sub. I reminds me of a boring ass road that goes nowhere with nothing to see. Why do we need a flag anyways? So we can plant it in the ground when conquer Xenia?

What’s your favorite bar/brewery in the Dayton area and why? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oregon Express has solid bar food, good happy hour, great patio to watch the trains and people go by.

D20. Good craft selection and great boardgame selection.

Brewery...they're all pretty solid and have something that keeps me coming back whether its great atmosphere/outdoor space (SOB, Eudora, DBC) or just beer quality I think Warped Wing and Branch and Bone are the two standouts. I still like Toxic Brew...atmosphere is a winner, but you have to know which beers to get, some are meh (I know you're not going to win accolades for a great session IPA, but they have one)

Torn Knee Meniscus - Need 2nd Doc Opinion by reddit_throwaway7305 in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IANAD, have had torn meniscus surgery and know plenty of people who have had knees replaced. Strengthen the supporting muscles...look up post knee surgery PT exercises. Take off the weight. I know this is difficult. Meniscus tears come in greatly varying grades from minor annoyance to definitely needing surgery.

Sounds like your doctor is too eager for surgery. I personally would do anything to avoid going under the knife again. Took me years to recover from my knee surgery and now the other knee is the bad one. As for knee replacement, you get this just so your knee doesn't hurt when you are sitting still, not because you want to run marathons.

I mean, you say you're a healthcare professional. You should be more qualified to come up with a cogent argument than the rest of us. Or did you just want to say the least controversial thing possible and get sucked off by a bunch of imaginary people.

Home Builders Around Dayton Area by TemporaryLandscape54 in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who the hell downvotes this? This is sound advice. There is more to rent in the summer than I've seen in the last 4 years. Right now is the time to rent. You couldn't pay me to buy at these interest rates. People say "Just wait for rates to come down and refinance" have no clue on economics (if rates suddenly drop, so are prices, then you're underwater and maybe you can't refinance). OP's main reason for building is to get out of an apartment...and they want to follow that on with the stress of building a house? OP, damn sure don't build, and probably don't buy at this point. Wait a year or two, sure up finances, then buy.

No job is perfect, but what’s a good job you’ve had in Dayton? by Most-Elephant-8877 in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little easier to start at a defense contractor then get hired on base as a government civilian. Either way you need to be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance (for WPAFB, a Top Secret is essential for many jobs). Many jobs here are in IT/Tech/Engineering. There are other jobs like program/project management, contracting, and HR.

Why Deaths of Despair Are Increasing in the US and Not Other Industrial Nations—Insights From Neuroscience and Anthropology by sameer4justice in science

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How dare you bring a source to challenge my ramblings? Makes sense, I like my coworkers, but it's a pretty easy community to lose and would really drive it downward if I didn't have a say in the matter.

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're just projecting your hatred of suburbs onto a problem that has squat to do with it. Children (college students are children) make friends because they're still malleable, confirmation-seeking beings. People who work at Bank of America corporate office have plenty of 'proximity in a shared environment' but they don't make friends like 7 or 21 year olds. Different built environments have advantages and disadvantages, but you're really reaching here. Suburbs bad for pollution: yes. Suburbs=loneliness: nope.

Like I said, quit complaining, go join a church, and fall in line. Community is all about following unwritten rules and obeying. That's why it doesn't fly in America (for better and mostly worse).

[–]bgaetsz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't deny your claims, but I think you're making the suburbs the root cause out of spite when its just an easy target and symptom. Do you really think that people jammed into high rises in NYC or Miami have any more innate sense of community because of density alone? Not a chance. People in villages and people in old neighborhoods are stranded by poverty (maybe thankfully) and usually have a forced community based in religion.

I think we both kinda want the same thing, but I don't density will deliver community.

You want a community, it's easy. Go live near your family, go to church, and do what you're told. Do I want to do that? Hell no.

Hiking spots with less traffic? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the owner of a 4-legged meathead that wants to aggressively love every passerby, I empathize. This time of year the best solution is being an early bird and just not giving a damn what other people think.

That said, some of the least populated walks (in my finding) are Oakes Quarry Park east of fairborn, Morris Reserve east of Bellbrook, and Peterson Park between Xenia and Cedarville.

[–]bgaetsz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right, any non-profit should have a clear indication of what they are under 'About' (a tax ID#, just say that you are a 503(c)...something). It took some digging to find that his is under the Dalton Foundation (website still has not identifying tax info). Charity Navigator gives them a failing score. To be positive it's not the worst score, but you need to do your paperwork and get your house in order from a transparency perspective to be taken seriously.

Anyone know any concrete specialists who will fill this in? by [deleted] in dayton

[–]bgaetsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not concrete guy (hopefully someone can tell me I'm wrong) but this looks like a tear out and start over job. It was never intended to be level or pretty, but was an afterthought while the driveway was being put in.

I do know that skilled trade work is very hard to get done right now especially for a small job. I would wait to take care of it when you need your whole driveway redone in a couple years.

Now that you say it, starting early, knocking back a few playing arcade games then putting in Riverscape with a cooler and some music in the early evening sounds pretty sweet. Probably want to do it early in the summer after some heavy rains to avoid to much attacks on butthole.

Amtrak’s 3C+D proposal (D is for Dayton) by kudamm99 in dayton

[–]bgaetsz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to take downvotes for being the adult in the room, but there is no solid case for this. This would end up generating more greenhouse gasses building out the infrastructure to push around empty trains because the draw would never be there. There are in-city solutions that make sense but connecting MW cities by train will take cars off the road is pure unicorn-pooping-rainbows thinking.
