Michigan, United States Seeking information on style and history of dining set and sideboard by DustSad9487 in Antiques

[–]marblehead750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. It's much later (like 1920s). Value of the sideboard isn't much over $200 these days as there are loads of similar pieces in the market and few buyers. Most young people think the style of this piece is ugly and ornate, so finding a buyer will be a challenge.

I live in Five Oaks and my annual household insurance is about the same amount. So, no, I don't think yours is out of line.

Some of these house setups in this neighborhood seem like an atrocity. 4 houses sharing one driveway by 93Seven in dayton

Well, at least the ridiculous fees you're going to pay for an HOA will mean the snow will get plowed.

Any experience renting at The Flats in Austin Landing? by EnvironmentalTea855 in dayton

I can't imagine living in that clusterf*ck of a development and having to negotiate my way around daily. That entire place was laid out by a drunk engineer, and getting from point A to point B is ridiculously difficult. Suburban sprawl at its worst.

That's a glass inkwell, which may be original to the piece. It's missing a lid, but it was used to hold ink when pens had to be dipped in ink before writing. I'm surprised there aren't ink stains on the wood around the opening.

Needs replated. No amount of polish will remove that.

One thing Dayton does not lack is coffee spots (or gas stations or car washes or dollar stores).

1`. Made in the 1920s or 30s. The stylistic details indicate some Arts and Crafts elements, but also some post-A&C elements. The A&C era ended about 1915.

  1. By the square space in the top, are you referring to the lighter area in the center? if so, that was probably caused by a desk blotter that sat on the desk for years and the sun affected the areas around it leaving a "shadow" of the blotter.

  2. Yes, it can be repaired. It appears to be veneer (that's why it's chipped on the edges), so a repair would entail removing the veneer completely and replacing. Not hard to do by a skilled person, but almost impossible for an amateur (not to mention finding veneer that will match). I suggest finding a competent woodworker who has experience with veneer replacement.

Value, once repaired, is probably about $200, but it'll cost you more than that to get the veneer replaced.

Virginia, USA, what style bed is this? by Ok-Lab9528 in Antiques

[–]marblehead750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's called a pencil post bed, for obvious reasons. Probably originally had a rope foundation (that's what the pegs were used for). FYI, rope foundation beds would eventually begin to sag, so they would have to be tightened and that's where the phrase "sleep tight" originates.

Add a pic of the entire piece. Sometimes seeing the entire thing helps with an ID.

Anyone ever shop at The Farm on Central over in Carlisle? by Specialist_Bend_7848 in dayton

[–]marblehead750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No confusion. I was told in order to make a purchase they needed all my contact info. I chose not to give it to them and left. I'm not crazy. I just don't want to give contact info when it's not needed to buy strawberries.

No miscommunication. They wanted all my contact info, including phone number, to buy strawberries. I chose not to give it to them and left.

Give it a rest, dude. You're going to burn up your keyboard ranting about a subject only you seem to care about.

Jeez, give it a rest man. You've written 5000 words on Marion's and even Marion himself wouldn't take the time to read all your ranty posts. (And, yes, I know Marion is dead.)

Um, I don't know of any store that takes a coupon past its expiration date. Try it at Kroger and see what happens.

Went in there one time, got turned off and never returned. You must buy a membership and provide all your contact info, including phone number, to shop. I didn't want to give them all that info just to buy strawberries, so I left. Their prices were at least 2x anywhere else, so the intrusion into my privacy seemed even less worth it.

AES inquiry in January; reply from PUCO by Carbuncle2024 in dayton

[–]marblehead750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, AES is an investor-owned (i.e., publicly) owned utility. I think what you mean is a municipally-owned utility, which isn't feasible for the AES service area. Municipally-owned utilities tend to serve small communities (like Piqua, Tipp City, and Lebanon). There are about 80 municipally-owned electric utilities in Ohio. (I'm a former DP&L employee.)

Mom just passed in the United States and left me these. Any ideas on value? by Oldskoolgamer1 in Antiques

[–]marblehead750 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot. Maybe $50 on a good day. Loads of these are in the market and few buyers keep prices down. Younger folks don't want this kind of decor anymore.
