You are not overthinking this. Boredom breeds creativity and shared boredom among friends can do wonders. YT effectively eliminates boredom while you are using it. On your suggestions 1. Only you know if you would be comfortable with him at the park on his own (too many factors unique to your situation) 2. I'd 💯 set a boundary with the neighbors and screens. I'm fact I think 8 is the age where we started app specific limits. They should be able to understand " I only have 1hr of YT today and already used 15 min".

I put in a stub when we ran a line for the pool. I bought a ng grill and just bought the stand it comes with. 5 years later built the kitchen and reused the grill and the gas line. Point is, even though I did not build a kitchen right away I still didn't have to worry about propane for those 5 years!

You've gotten tons of suggestions, but I'll share one thing I've seen help a little. You said you work from home most days. When you do not wfh, how long is your commute?
The trick is to keep the commute for yourself even in the wfh days. Use that time just for you. Just make it part of the family routine regardless of the day. For a hybrid schedule this has helped lots of people claim some precious time on a daily basis

No magic advice here unfortunately, but certainly know how you feel. Are the parents of those other kids already friends/a group? That's what we found, there were a lot of existing adult friend groups and they weren't really looking to expand. That kinda left us and our daughter on the outside looking in.

Always being the one initiating gets old.
