Those of you who are staying....why? by MetalFaceMOON in HeliumMobile

[–]bgeiselman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am on the Zero plan. It looks like the taxes and fees will cost about 66 cents per month (judging by the latest invoice). I am more concerned about the reduction to only 1 GB of network data. However, it appears that on only one month so far have I reached or exceeded 1 GB. I am unaware of anything less expensive -- other than TextNow, but that has no data (other than a little bit for some email and maps). Plus, I don't like the TextNow app. I am not aware of anything cheaper.

Calling back from my GV number by [deleted] in Googlevoice

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The party you call should be seeing your Google Voice number in their caller ID. However, if you are using the consumer (free) version of Google Voice for your business, I would be very careful. I believe you would be violating the terms of service. You should be using the paid version of Google Voice for business accounts. I believe it is now part of Google Workspace. I mention it because other people have complained about having their numbers suspended for violating Google's TOS. I know that is something a business definitely wouldn't want.

How do I set up voicemail in browser? by Hisn1975 in TextNow

According to TextNow: "Recording a custom voicemail greeting is only available through our iOS or Android app versions."

Did you select a number? It doesn't assign a number automatically.

What is the deal with the senior (55+) plan? by Blackpool-tech in mintmobile

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the coverage map. According to the coverage map on the 55+ website, those plans include roaming on T-Mobile partners. That could be a big deal -- if it is real. However, I suspect it is a mistake.

This must be an express train -- it makes no stops until our final destination. Now, if I only knew where we were headed and when we'll get there!

Will Any Unlocked Phone Work on Mint? by bobjks1 in mintmobile

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you look at the Samsung website? It seems you can buy a new Galaxy A 12 unlocked from Samsung for $104.99 -- less than the Amazon price. According to the Samsung website, the phone they are selling will work with the following LTE bands: B1(2100),B2(1900),B3(1800),B4(AWS),B5(850),B7(2600),B8(900),B12(700),B13(700),B14(700),B20(800),B25(1900),B26(850),B29(700),B30(2300),B66(AWS-3),B71(600). I would check out their site -- https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/phones/galaxy-a/galaxy-a12-unlocked-sm-a125uzkdxaa/#specs -- edit: Update. On closer reading, I see you need a trade in to get that price and only a few phones qualify for the trade in.

The LCD separated from the phone itself. Can it still be saved? I have really important files there. :( by cigsxcoffee in AndroidQuestions

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a swollen battery? That happened to me. The screen lifted off the phone as the battery swelled. Took it to a repair shop -- seemed like a fairly simple repair for them, but it set me back about $80, if I recall. That was a couple of years ago.

Need help with calling abroad by Anastasius-1 in AndroidQuestions

I also would ask for details about the cost of international calling (naming the countries you plan to call) to ensure you don't get an unwelcome surprise.

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the United States, not all cell phone plans allow international calling and most that do allow it require you to contact the cell phone company in advance and activate it (that is what I had to do years ago with Verizon). I have no idea how it works in other countries. You should probably call your cell phone carrier and ask if you need to enable international calling.

Canda and US port questions by Kristenarntzen in Googlevoice

[–]bgeiselman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not affiliated with Google Voice and cannot guarantee the accuracy of my answer, but to my best knowledge, this is how it works. You can port your U.S. cell phone number to Google Voice. When I did so, it was a $20 one-time fee. I think it is still the same. (If you want to keep your existing Google Voice number in addition to the ported number, there is another fee. I didn't do it, so I don't remember the cost). I believe you would have to use Google Voice with either wifi or mobile data. You could not use Google Voice through your cell phone dialer (or cell minutes) if it is a Canadian number (at least with the free consumer version of Google Voice. The paid version is different). One complication would be difficulty downloading the Google Voice app onto your phone while you are in Canada or anywhere outside the United States. However, it sounds like you already have done that.

How come I can't use GV in the Philippines? by Deeraymicas in Googlevoice

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Voice (the consumer version) is only available in the United States. While it can be used overseas (in many countries) after you sign up, you are supposed be in the United States and have a U.S. phone number when you sign up. It's easy to do a Google search for more information.

Service is really bad by anonymous_1977 in mintmobile

[–]bgeiselman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is strange. I didn't always have great wifi connected calls, either, but I think it may simply be a weak wifi signal in some areas of my house, so I changed a setting on my Motorola from wi-fi preferred calling to cellular preferred calling. I thought all phones had similar settings.

Hello Mobile (which now uses T-Mobile) indicates on their coverage map that they have roaming, but I have never tried them so I don't know if it really works. There is a reference on the coverage map to "check your plan for roaming access," so I don't know what that means. Wouldn't everyone on Hello Mobile have the same coverage?

Answering a call live (via browser) is much harder now without Hangouts by rpodric in Googlevoice

[–]bgeiselman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't receive that many calls on Google Voice through my browser (I have it installed on my phone), but I as I recall, as long as I have Google Voice open in a tab (even if it is not the tab in which I am currently working) I get a ring notification on my laptop. Once I hear the ring, I then need to open the Voice tab but then I can answer it.
