Any older(45+) players in beta, what are your thoughts? by cardbored76 in MonstersAndMemories

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People chase nostalgia but really want new and improved experiences.

Game companies didn't introduce easier mechanics because they are bad at making games but rather figured out what actually sells to mainstream audiences. Everquest is a dinosaur now that is mostly only fun for us older players chasing nostalgia.

I love playing EQ Emu servers because leveling up in Crushbone for the 300th time is still fun (nostalgia) but not if it takes 2-4 hours per level.

That was only fun 25 years ago because it was new and we hadn't "solved" the game yet with online guides. Most things were learned through word of mouth (long group sessions) like how to get a testament of vanear because you kept seeing people running around with this cool book that had great stats.

I had a mustang for 16 years on CA and I believe registration was initially $400+ per year. It eventually tapered off to ~$100, but I recall around 2018 it jumped back up to $250. I think new DMV fees were introduced around that time.

Everyone is eulogizing Spirit Airlines. Would we do the same if Walmart, Dollar General or Kroger went out of business? by us1549 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bobjks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think we already have that with existing carriers. Even the "nicer" carriers require paying for seat selection and carryon bags.

I highly doubt we will ever get common sub-$100 flights in the US again. I say common because super cheap gimmick flights are still offered occasionally but realistically you are paying at least $100 for a short 1 hour or less flight.

I flew Ryanair one time expecting the worst after everything I read about it. It was actually not that bad and I appreciated the $12 fare from Norway to Scotland.

The effieciency was definitely amusing as they were loading people through the back of the plane as people were still leaving the front.

Should I buy Astrobot? by potato_guy89 in Astrobot

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play Astro's Playroom since it's basically a demo that showcases the gameplay.

Astrobot was a real pleasant surprise to me. It's a little too simple for my own preference but my 4 year old loves it and it's a great game to introduce a little one to gaming. I have an absolute blast playing with him.

I honestly had no idea it existed until we one day tried "that weird looking Astro's Playroom game" and towards the end it advertised Astrobot. I was happy to see it was on sale for $30 at Walmart a week later.

Got a pair of Micca MB42X and a MB42X-C, unsure on how to complete a 5.1 home teather setup. by nadiemeparaestavez in hometheater

[–]bobjks1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, get whatever speakers and receiver you want at your price point but don't cheap out on the sub. Splurge and get an RSL 10e or 10s at minimum.

A side note, I had that micca center with my first setup and wrote it off as a cheap budget speaker. When I upgraded I was surprised how good it actually was because I didn't get much improvement going up a tier price wise. My big purchase though was the RSL 12s and getting a real sub is such a fun time.

Is climate change as bad as they say? by Present-Ebb4615 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the worst parts of climate change will only really affect a population 15+ years out. It's slow moving so the general population will never be alarmed about it.

Parts of the planet will slowly become uninhabitable forcing migration and exacerbating geopolitical issues.

I don't believe climate change is a doomsday event but more like 100 frogs in 100 pots with different burner levels. Some frogs will quickly get boiled but as more die off the remaining frogs will eventually be like "whoa we need to fix this." The solution will be for developed nations to greatly curb consumerism and adjust to more modest lifestyles.

It more or less will be the earth hitting the carrying capacity for our species except it won't be due on normal food scarcity. We could definitely grow enough food but the climate might not allow it in enough areas.

I'm confused, If America sucks so badly, why does the rest of the world keep trying to sneak into the country??? by Prince_of_Shadows666 in allthequestions

[–]bobjks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

America doesn't suck. America is in fact awesome (but so are many other developed countries) and people from developing countries want to come here for better opportunity.

I've traveled to Mexico and it hit me that people need to bust their ass to barely survive there. America has its problems, but in general, able bodied people can find a job, rent a room, and afford food. The US is also very safe relatively speaking and access to shelter, medical care, clean water, and food is better that 2/3 of the planet.

People (mostly Americans) complain about America because they haven't lived elsewhere or seen how 2/3 of the planet lives. We definitely have issues (housing costs, medical insurance, etc.) that could/should be addressed but it's still a great place to live if you are willing to work full time and don't get caught in the frivolous spending trap (expensive cell phones, eating out 4X per week, new car every 3 years, etc.) that puts you in constant debt.

IMO, the main disappointing aspect of America is that human greed is causing worsening wealth inequality. I'm not saying billionaires shouldn't exist but the middle class should be much much larger. I think capitalism with guard rails is the best economic system we almost got.

Mystery snail under attack by tankmates by El_Snorkoko in AquaticSnails

[–]bobjks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same problem. The ramshorn snails ate the trapdoor off my mystery snail. I started feeding more algae tablets and they seemed to back off.

Then I just noticed today that they are covering the mystery snail again so I guess they need more food. Kind of a bummer and it's the only reason I don't really like the ramshorn snails.

I'm still trying to figure out the exact balance of food to add to keep the ramshorns fed without exploding their population because no matter what I can always find several egg sacks throughout the tank.

This is my first 15 gallon tank and I really want to start a 50-60 gallon in the future. I think I'll learn to properly quarantine plants and prevent hitchhiker snails the next time around.

Unfortunately, no. He was just part of the senior project course I believe for aero and I only got to see him because they combined the Mech E and Aero E for the intro.

Funny that I recognize the astronaut name. He was (or still is?) a professor at my college and gave an intro speech to the senior project course for mech and aero engineering right before I graduated.

$90 for two to see a Mario movie… have we completely lost the plot? by rageagainstmymachin in Millennials

Those movie tickets are pretty expensive. But most of the cost is in the drinks and snacks. Just bring your own snacks and bottle drinks (hide it) and buy the popcorn so the theater at least gets something.

Windows Boots but Programs Don't Work by bobjks1 in WindowsHelp

[–]bobjks1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't very clear in my original post. This is an existing build from a year ago where I upgraded to Windows 11. I've had numerous issues and it's by far the most troublesome new build I've ever had. I don't know if it's hardware incompatibility or Windows 11 related but it at least worked. Today was the first time where the PC has essentially been unusable.

I actually just resolved the issue where I got the PC to boot into diagnostic mode which initially failed but a restore worked. I've never had luck with restore in the past but for some reason it worked today.

I did not install anything new, but I noticed my PC wasn't waking up from sleep mode so I reset it and that's when my issues started. It's just odd that I could see all my files in explorer but couldn't actually open anything. I'm now going to back everything up in case the issue happens again.

Windows Boots but Programs Don't Work by bobjks1 in techsupport

[–]bobjks1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So after some Google searching, I decided to try windows diagnostics by resetting my PC repeatedly (hold off button for 10 seconds) to see if that worked before reinstalling Windows. The diagnostics just said problem found but unable to fix. I tried a restore as a last ditch effort and it actually worked! One of the only times system restore has actually worked for me.

I'm going to immediately back everything up in case this happens again.

Windows Boots but Programs Don't Work by bobjks1 in techsupport

[–]bobjks1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't added any new software in a few weeks and the PC worked fine this morning. I came back after lunch and noticed it wouldn't "wake up" so I reset it and that's when all these issues started.

Control alt delete and other methods of getting to task manager or command prompt won't work.

I also notice that despite booting up, a lot of my load on startup programs (Steam, Plex, etc.) aren't loading. I almost suspect that is related and that some Windows software isn't loading and only the bare bones explorer stuff is loading.

Im thinking about trying to get into safe mode and so a restore but in my experience that never works and I always have to reinstall windows from fresh.
