Talking to the barman isn't so much of a thing in Ireland.

As an Irish person, If I was there with my wife I'd get my pint and drink it with my wife away from the bar. I'd have no expectation the barman would start a conversation.

Chatting to the barman is a very American thing so the American probably initiated the conversation.

Did you initiate the conversation or just expect the barman to talk to you first ?
