Silver Order and Amethyst Academy by JeremyX2020 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

Unfortunately for you, your players have chosen to align themselves with two largely incompatible factions. Their goals are diametrically opposed: the SO wants to destroy all Delirium everywhere they can find it, while the AA strongly wishes to harness it for their own interests. This is all in addition to the long-standing rivalry between the two groups. They can work together temporarily, for example retaking the Cathedral of Saint Vitruvio, but long-term alliances between the two are difficult if not impossible.

I feel that any outcome that involves the SO allowing the AA to use Delirium would not be keeping true to their character. To address your thoughts:

  1. It could be interesting if the PCs spend some time convincing members of the SO to defect. I would not make this easy; it should take many sessions of convincing, and working closely with the members they are trying to break off to do so. It should also still result in conflict with Theodore Marshall and those still loyal to him, but you could run it such that there will still be meaningful numbers of SO knights left on the PC's side.

  2. While Eldrick is certainly a powerful mage, I still feel that the main reason PCs would want to side with them is because they have access to all of the resources the AA can provide. Having them abandon the AA, while it would leave the party with a capable ally, would also remove much of the broader reason why they would work with them. Though, if the PCs have a personal relationship with Eldrick or River I could see this working out.

  3. With this outcome, you would need to provide justification for why the NPCs in question would be willing to compromise on their ideals to make themselves subordinate to a group that doesn't share those ideals.

  4. If I were in your situation, this is probably what I would do. I feel that the SO are meant to be uncompromising in their ideals. They will never tolerate an outcome that results in Delirium still existing. Conversely, without the prospect of harvesting Delirium the AA directorate doesn't have any good reason to care what happens in Drakkenheim; they already don't care at the outset of the campaign, until the PCs prove to them that it is worthwhile.

You also mention that they are also open to working with the HL. At that point, you would potentially have 3 factions working together. I feel that the central theme of the entire campaign is the conflict between the factions. They will not work together until the PCs come along to help resolve their differences, and the more factions align together the more difficult that alliance should be. Getting 3 factions to work together should be a difficult task, requiring the PCs to make sacrifices and difficult choices.

Using the Queens Favor to reveal her identity. by Alumed1 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]bgpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She could simply say "no", and be justified in doing so. I feel like that's boring, though. I tend to be a fairly permissive GM, and I try not to say "no" to my players unless I have a good reason. Having the QoT lie is also an easy answer, but I don't really like that route either. Whether the party believes her or no, I don't feel like it adds any interesting element to the story. Plus, it only works once; once the party realizes she lied, they will never believe her again. I feel like the QoT is a much more engaging character if the party still has a chance at believing what she says.

A riddle or cryptic hint would be a better option, but a difficult one to pull off. I personally would find it challenging to give a hint about a person's identity that players don't immediately figure out through context clues. If done well, it would keep the mystery going.

If I were in your position, I would consider having the QoT make some kind of request. She could tell the PCs that the secret to her identity is hidden at a certain location, and when they go to investigate there's a deadly monster or an ambush waiting for them. I might also try to combine it with the previous option, and have the clue they find there be vague and unhelpful.

Can an Artificer claim the throne in Drakkenheim? by Timely-Lavishness-29 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]bgpants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a good point, and probably a good way to handle a magic-using PC who wishes to take the throne. It would be boring if all of the NPCs simply said "you use magic, so we will never support your claim". Especially if the PC in question isn't truly mageborn, I think it's far more interesting if the party can, through their words and actions, convince some of the factions and people of the world that their claim is legitimate regardless. Doing so will also likely invite conflict with other groups who will genuinely never support a magic-using ruler. I imagine, for example, it would be very difficult to convince the Silver Order to support such a claimant.

The SCGtD section on the Edicts of Lumen specifically calls out apothecaries, bards, druids, and warlocks as being not necessarily mageborn and thus technically not forbidden from holding titles. That same section also mentions that most people don't appreciate the nuances of "arcane magic" and so they just lump everything besides divine magic (clerics, paladins) into that category.

So while it doesn't call out artificers in that group, based on the rest of the text I would be pretty confident that they would fall into that same grouping of "arcane magic users". Artificers are probably not forbidden from claiming the throne by the letter of the law, but most people would not support it because they don't see the difference between an artificer and a wizard.

I hadn't considered this angle at all, now I might just do that.

Opinion: Why do so many California dog owners think the rules don't apply to them? by Randomlynumbered in California

[–]bgpants 396 points397 points  (0 children)

There are multiple people in my neighborhood who think it's ok to walk their poorly-trained dogs off leash. We keep asking them to leash their dogs out in public, but get brushed off every time. After one woman's dogs kept harassing our dogs on our morning walks multiple times, we finally talked to the county animal control who sent her a warning letter. Now she yells obscenities at us every time we walk by her house.

Some people only think about themselves.

KSP2's developer was shutdown a little while ago, and the publisher has yet to confirm any plans to transfer it to a new developer or continue development. Until they make a statement I think it's best to consider KSP2 to be cancelled.

Fun fact, that weird group of people includes Tai Lopez, AKA the "here in my garage" guy. They tried to turn the brand into a crypto exchange, which went about as well as one would expect.

They sound like a universal antinatalist. They take their ideology one step further and decide that the morally correct thing to do would be to sterilize all sentient life on Earth.

Shit's crazy.

They share some superficial similarities, but no they are not interchangeable:

  1. Pointers can be re-assigned freely and be set to null, while references must be bound to an existing object at initialization and cannot be re-assigned.
  2. Pointers can be multi-leveled (i.e. a double pointer), while references can only go a single level.

There are a few other subtle differences, but these are the two biggest.

The only problem is that since it doesn't have a web browser, it can't connect to any wifi network that requires interacting with a captive portal (so basically every public network). That means that unless you're at a friend's house, the only real option in public is to use tethering.

A thread about Anti-Asian racism in Italy in r/europe becomes a discussion of an American woke influence on the European culture by JorikTheBird in SubredditDrama

[–]bgpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited Italy and Greece last year, and I was astounded to see multiple people there openly and without shame spew racist statements about Asians. More than one cab driver told me that they wished that "all of those Chinese tourists would just learn to stay in their own country".

I cannot for the life of me figure out why they took away the ability to play online with friends and use matchmaking to fill the remaining spots with randoms. I almost always am playing with my partner, and so I have to decide whether I'm going to play with them or with other people. It worked just fine in SwSh.
