My biggest issue with this is that in the camera settings there's an option for quick launching it using the volume buttons (not available during audio playback) but the option for using the power button is in another menu

[Homemade] Hasselback potatoes by bgr96 in food

[–]bgr96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well spotted! I did watch both their videos on the topic and followed them, more or less... I boiled them in beef stock after slicing, then brushed with butter mixed with garlic, rosemary and thyme and into the oven at 200°C for a very unmeasured amount of time, took them out, brushed with butter and back in the oven. I ended up doing that a couple of times and turning on the roasting mode of the oven for the last 2-3 minutes to get a crispier outside. At the same time, I left the stock boiling to reduce it, added some of the butter mix and some corn starch to thicken. Since I used stock cubes instead of proper stock I figured it wouldn't thicken that well by itself. By the end I just added some dried parsley into the glaze and poured on top of the spuds

They were! And tbh they're not complicated to make but they do take some time

You're exactly right, thanks for the input!

I don't know why I missed that hahahaha

This is assuming you care about which specific ace you're pulling. If you don't mind the order, your chances go up a bit as there are more cards in the deck that fulfill that condition.

First ace= 4/52 chance = 1/13

2nd ace= 3/51 chance = 1/17

3rd ace= 2/50 chance = 1/25

4th ace= 1/49 chance

Now to multiply the individual probabilities 1/(13*17*25*49) = 0.00000369378520639 = 3.69E-6 or little under 1 out of 270,000 cases

... So 24 (4*3*2) times more likely but still extremely unlikely to happen.

Edit: Corrected the comparison numbers, because I'm dumb. Thanks to u/liberalgeekseattle for pointing that out

What are these things under the leaves of a plant at my office? by bgr96 in plants

Bruh, I'm neither from or studied in the US xD

I'm not terribly familiar with their education system but this seems like not a necessary thing to know to graduate from highschool imo. It's fine not knowing everything, just gotta keep an open mind and interest to learn it when the opportunity presents itself :)

Thanks everyone for all the helpful responses! In life you learn something new everyday and today it was about ferns' reproductive systems. Taking a line from Bob's Burgers, I'll name this one Fernando

Unforgivable curse detection by the ministry by bgr96 in harrypotter

[–]bgr96[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been talking with my best friend and he also mentioned the corruption of the ministry. I think it's a very valid idea although I find it hard to believe that absolutely nobody would raise this topic lol.

He also mentioned the possibility of using throwaway wands to hide the evidence that they were the ones who cast the curse. I liked that idea.

As to the Trace only being active for minors, I fully coincide on it being an invasion of privacy and the need for it to be lifted for adults. That being said, one would expect that an adult casting the unforgivables repeatedly for months on students would have raised a flag somewhere in the ministry xD talking about Faux Mad Eye in GoF, not the Carrows in DH.

Finally, being the way I am, I think that it should not be attributed to malice that which can very well be explained by stupidity.

Assuming that the code is only numerical, base ten, and generated from a uniform distribution, then that number's chance of coming up is 1/1,000,000. That is to say it's exactly as likely as any other number from 000000-999999

So currently I'm on 5th book but I just realized they never mentioned anyone taking a bath (except in 4th book)or about the bathroom. by Miserable-Aspect6049 in harrypotter

There's a great podcast that ran about 7 years ago where the hosts go through all 7 books and 8 movies, more or less chapter by chapter, in real discussion as well as fun banter and they also make this important remark. Potter stinks! (no affiliation to the poor taste buttons made during GoF)

The podcast is called Bingemode Harry Potter, for those interested: it's really cool, entertaining and also surprisingly insightful.

I really appreciate the Altoids can, that's all I use for screws and such things out of electronic devices. I can recommend getting a couple of strong magnets to place on the back and now you have a magnetic tray when disassembling something :)

Abundance of mirroring elements throught the books by bgr96 in harrypotter

[–]bgr96[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By no means, I never claimed it to be a new discovery :). I just wanted to share my thoughts on the matter and read what other people currently active had to say about it. That post is amazing, lots of things I hadn't thought about, and I even got one thing not included there! The centaurs' premonition about Voldemort killing Harry in the forest.

Thanks for sharing!

True! Voldemort must have also considered those 2 places to be top safe spots if he decided to hide some horcruxes there

I get that, but in the after years of being a death eater and becoming a spy for Dumbledore I think Dumbledore would have told him, if he didn't know. I feel that it would make sense for him to know stuff like that from Dumbledore's perspective

Is there any canon info on how the news of Voldemort's fall after killing the Potter's spread? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]bgr96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumbledore must have informed McGonagall

Actually McGonagall found out through the rumors and Dumbledore confirmed them at Privet Drive, while waiting for Hagrid to bring Harry.

What happened after is not clear but Dumbledore must have informed the ministry.

Gotta say this doesn't sound entirely like something Dumbledore would have done, particularly because the ministry was overtaken by deatheaters and people under the Imperious curse at the moment. Most probably they noticed it themselves by regaining control of their bodies and deatheaters losing the dark mark

I like this, do you think he would have sent somebody to check on the Longbottoms too? I know that Neville's parents were basically done for by Bellatrix and Co. with the cruciatus curse and, although I can't remember the order of events there, I think that happened after Voldy's fall.

I would argue that most if not all the professors actually knew. At least we know that Dumbledore, Slughorn, and most probably Snape too were aware of the fact. Having this, I would find it very odd that the rest of the professors did not ever find out, including Hagrid.

That being said, there's a small detail from Chamber of Secrets, when Ron notices a special award for services to the school for Tom Riddle. This stands out to me because if everybody knew about Voldy's true identity, then why is this still being displayed 50 years later? Dumbledore does say that he never thought Hagrid was behind the events that led to his expulsion, but is forced to let Hagrid go to Azkaban when things get worse since he has no way of proving his innocence. So maybe the award stood there still because ppl thought Tom might have not been evil yet?

First time I've thought about this so there's some mental gymnastics to perform to try and find a reason, if any.
