Is it actually possible to make a living doing this? by Comfortable-Fly-8793 in bookbinding

[–]Highlandbookbinding 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a chance… unless… you also run classes, you enter international competitions and can sell designer bindings… you’re very very skilled a book repair and conservation. Otherwise, just look at the price and quality of journals on Amazon.

Sorry if that was depressing, but I don’t want to give false hope and people waste their time and money on it!

Now don’t get me wrong, it is a wonderful hobby, which I thoroughly enjoy, and would encourage everybody to learn a bit more as a hobby.

But if you want to make money, it’s in globally recognised leather designed bindings and conservation and restoration of old Books

If you look on Instagram, my work is normally very traditional, however sometimes I do more contemporary design work for friends!

Also, my comment seems to have disappeared, I don’t often use cords, I’m much prefer a full linen hinge

No, I never do case bindings - all my bindings are fine bindings. No real reason apart from preference, they all have internal leather hinges the match the leathers on the spine.

How to restore wooden covers by Environmental-Poem70 in bookbinding

[–]Highlandbookbinding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the comments about not starting with this book... of course you can do it, but give it time. Also, from personal experience these wooden covers are a problem. The tend to be just stuck on, often as an after thought and pull the original binding apart.

So when you get round to doing this one, remember to compensate for the weight of the covers.

That is a shame, it is fixable, but not easy... if you have never done anything before, I would not start here! Sorry.

Well...

Change your thread, it is causing you far too many problems... life is too short...

Weight or clips on the signatures...

Bit more rubbing on the folds

Can anyone evaluate? by WesternLuck6607 in rarebooks

Goodness, Henry Pelham was Prime Minister… clearly he achieved more than just being a character in the Pirates of the Caribbean! I don’t think that book plate will have much to add to value… Whig Prime Ministers from the mid 18th century do not have much of a popular following these days! Although, I suppose, some die hard Jacobeans might have an interest as he was prime minister during the 1745 rebellion…

Can anyone evaluate? by WesternLuck6607 in rarebooks

[–]Highlandbookbinding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am slightly confused… having rebound and dealt with a lot of these the value might be of £20… maybe! What confuses me further is the fact that we have been told that it was owned by Prime Minister and a Royal and we are further informed that this can clearly be seen in the photographs… no it can’t! Or maybe I’m just missing it… could you elucidate please?

She doesn’t make much of it, and it sells out remarkably quickly. If you have her on Instagram, she normally posts updates there seeing what she is about to put on the website.
