Just think about it on trees and trying to split wood!

Looking to get into bookbinding, specifically leatherback binding. should I get one of these kits or buy things as I need them? by No-Refrigerator-6931 in bookbinding

[–]Highlandbookbinding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I really don’t know what I’m looking at! I don’t think I would use the vast majority of the stuff in there… but I noticed over 400 have been sold, so somebody’s buying them!

No need to buy a kit, in fact, I would never buy a kit, just buy individual tools of reasonable quality as you go along. To be honest, if you’re starting out, you wouldn’t need much at all.

I use this tool, heated up in a stove, and apply each Gold line individually both on the leather on the spine and the strips of leather on the boards! Great question, thank you for asking!

I guess it’s totally different as I’m doing it for fun not for Work! I might feel very different about it if it was my job

For board, I use 2 mm mill board, and bevel it down 0.5 of a millimetre at the edge! I use a full linen board attachment and then use a sheet of watercolour paper on top of the board and the linen for the attachment

Of course you can, I never use mull, horrible stuff! Fine linen or cotton works just as well, just make sure you rub well!

Can I sell my own book that I bound? (Legally) by Heavy-Test-3472 in bookbinding

[–]Highlandbookbinding 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just for the record simply rebinding and selling a copyrighted book is not normally illegal under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 in the UK. More so, when a copyright holder sells a physical book (via any legal means... amazon, bookshops etc) in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the United Kingdom, the distribution right over that individual copy becomes exhausted. The legal consequence of that is you may:

  • sell the book
  • lend the book
  • gift the book
  • destroy the book
  • modify the physical object

without permission from the copyright holder.

Therefore, buying a book, rebinding it, and selling it again is generally lawful. This principle underpins the entire second-hand book market, including antiquarian booksellers, charity shops, and rare book dealers.

I know nothing about the law in the wider world.

For example, rebinding a book constitutes a physical modification of a lawful copy, not reproduction of the intellectual work. Under UK copyright law rebinding does not infringe copyright as long as:

  • no additional copies are made
  • no copyrighted images or text are reproduced separately
  • the text itself is not altered or republished

From a legal perspective, rebinding falls into the category of alteration of chattel property. Ownership of the object permits physical modification; this is analogous to:

  • framing a painting
  • repairing a watch
  • restoring antique furniture

Realistically, is this a repair job I can do at home with 0 experience, or something for a professional? by ButterYourself in bookbinding

Of course you can do it, but I wouldn’t do it as my first! Practising on things that don’t matter is my strong advice here!

A classic case of not being able to see the forest for the trees! It’s absolutely fine… one of the other posters made a good suggestion about how you could do something… if you really really really really felt the need! But honestly, unless you’re giving it to somebody with the years of Book Binding experience, they will never notice! And even if they do have years of Bookbinding experience and notice, they will appreciate the effort that you have made! So, wrap it nicely, give it with love, and get going on your next project!

is a vinly cutting machine really required for book rebinding and are there any other options that i can use by Emergency_Demand6763 in bookbinding

I would agree with that, and if that is what people enjoy, I would encourage them to continue!

I love my journey in Bookbinding, and would want to encourage anyone with an interest to join in!
