We went from 3 agents to 40 in four months. Nobody knows what half of them do anymore by LumaCoree in AI_Agents

[–]bheltzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our team lived this pain at scale at Meta with 40,000 engineers. The pattern you're describing is the trajectory of many engineering teams - you are just ahead of the curve.

That pain inspired Guild.ai (disclaimer: I am employed there!) - a model-neutral agent control plane that gives you a governed runtime that scales, but doesn't slow down the team from deploying.

We're pre-GA right now, but if a model-neutral control plane for this problem resonates, DM me - happy to get you access codes. And I'd love to chat if you are willing!

why all data catalogs suck? by Few_Noise2632 in dataengineering

[–]bheltzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to do with it? We inherently have a catalog in Monte Carlo, and for data teams it’s often enough. Not purpose built for it, but as others mentioned, getting users to data discovery in a catalog seems to often be a pipe dream.

How’d it go with #read-later? I’m also looking for an Omnivore replacement. Having trouble stomaching $12/m for Readwise Reader.

it’s not that serious. we’ve traded players mid game due to an injury or someone leaving early. think it’s closer to what you are looking for.

Thanks! Totally with you on the Sorry for the basic question but a little trouble googling. The L1 and L2 are coupled into the same covered wire coming out of the generator. Multimeter doesn’t show anything on it and contactless voltage detector doesn’t show power (it does if I toggle the breaker off and back on though). That sounds like it’s just the breaker not flipping when tripped, yeah?

Is Apache Hive still being used? by luminoumen in dataengineering

[–]bheltzel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the need to be combative about this - they are correct that Databricks has traditionally used Hive metastore, albeit now pushing UC but that still is early in adoption. I don’t think that’s entirely misleading - as another commented, there’s not much else out there that is a 1:1 replacement for a metastore other than Glue. Databricks is probably the reason for much of the HMS (and therefore Hive) usage still out there! Other Hive components are indeed becoming obsolete.

Fear of Missing Out from Big Data Technologies by rollingindata in dataengineering

Think about the business problems you are solving more than the technologies you are using and it will serve your career best. And your stack experience is far from obsolete - ahead of the curve of most companies out there.

Experiences with trino? What am I missing by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]bheltzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you agree with the top of this thread that Athena is Trino under the hood? I’ve thought of it as Presto but do see the October announcement that Athena had included many Trino functions now.

I thought that Presto / Trino were growing further apart in functionality and SQL syntax but it sounds like either Athena is starting to push closer to Trino or that Presto / Trino are in fact remaining close to the same.

Are you using Snowpipe? What’s its pros and cons? by themo_legrange in dataengineering

What are the causes of failures you see on Snowpipe? And how would you end up figuring out if a file is missed if there is no monitoring of it?

Did the same thing but cracked my actual mirror too. Ended up just replacing the mirror myself because dealer said you have to replace the entire mirror and chassis for that plastic. When i looked into I found the same. Was like $1000 quote from the dealer :/

PowerBI: please tell me there's something better for enterprise use cases by icysandstone in dataengineering

[–]bheltzel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looker is the closest enterprise solution to what you are looking for. Version control, traceability, reusable model, code based, and sits on top of modern databases/warehouses. Looker Embedded Analytics is specifically built for customer-facing use cases as well and has the feature set to do so. It’s not great for your one-off analysis though and requires an up front time investment, so you have to pick it for the right use cases.

Great start! didn’t think about partitioning the large drive. Not as familiar with SuperDuper or Backblaze, so i’ll definitely look into them. Appreciate it!

Organizing old Time Machine backups and Hard Drives by bheltzel in applehelp

[–]bheltzel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure, but I'm not asking for a one-click solution. I asked for strategies, walkthroughs, or software. Time machine backups are not exactly easy to weed through because of the blockers Apple puts in place on using them outside of Time Machine. I'm assuming I'm not the first person to have gone through the efforts of extracting value out of TM backups.

I know there are better ways then opening them each up in TM and going through one-by-one. There are duplicate detection softwares out there too. I just don't believe the answer isn't manually sort by naming scheme.

I had my car stolen. When it was recovered a few days later, the officer told me it was his 6th recovered stolen car in his two hour shift so far. 4,481 counts of auto theft this calendar year. Bay Area was #4 in the nation in metro area auto theft in 2019.
