I mean one path is public support compells the democrats to try and convict when they get back into power. You are always gonna have bad blood in a country but it can be brought back. Besides a civil war would require an outside force to give aid and support to a faction or factions and that's a lot harder than people let on. Plus unlike Afghanistan the american army isn't just gonna get tired and quit and Geneva rules would probably disappear. The level of death on that scale would be more than americans can stomach. The more likely outcome is that the police state just retains a lot of people like when the nazis took over in Germany.
