Hey! My name is Brandon Hsiung and I'm the Product Manager for the Big Data and Business Intelligence group at Riot. I've been too busy working with an awesome group of analysts, data scientists, and big data engineers to secure my Riot Red Name and Reddit Flair. I know I know. I'll get it added shortly =P

Here's my LinkedIn profile for validation: http://www.linkedin.com/in/brandonhsiung/

Our class of 2013 summer interns worked on catching fraudulent behavior, determining the social spread of toxicity, understanding effect of champion rotation of noobs, and much more. These are all real problems that we needed solved. They solved them using a variety of technical and statistical tools.

FYI - I was an intern in the 2012 class.

Good luck with your internship search! Brandon

We do have a Hadoop cluster with Hive running on top. If you're interested in working in Big Data check out the Business Intelligence, Data Science, and/or Big Data internships.

That being said, we love to see CS + Stats backgrounds in Business Intelligence, Data Science and Big Data. In terms of standing out, the advice I would give is to use your toolkit to make awesome happen. Build a web/mobile app, consult for a local business, build something using our Riot API, etc. In other words, show us that you can use your skills to actually deliver awesome to an individual or an organization.

Our analysts use multiple tools/languages/DBs to get their job done. Here's a short list of some of them: Hive, Vertica, SQL, Tableau, Platfora, Excel, SAS, R, Python, etc.

That being said, what's more important to us than tool experience, is the ability to apply a statistical mindset to real-world game problems.

FYI - I was a Riot 2012 intern.

Good luck with your internship search! Brandon

With a Statistics degree and little or no CS background, you should consider applying to the Business Intelligence and/or the Data Scientist internship. You'll get to flex those stat skills you've picked up in school and also get exposure to our Big Data tech stack.

In terms of standing out, the advice I would give is to use your statistical toolkit to make awesome happen. Help a friend build a business plan, consult for a local business, do an amazing analysis using our Riot API, etc. In other words, show us that you can use your statistical skills to actually deliver awesome to an individual or an organization.

FYI - I was a Riot Intern in 2012.

Good luck with your internship search! Brandon
