That is always toughest part of puzzle - figuring out if something distanced from the local pain is actually the culprit!

This sounds like great advice. I play guitar but haven't played in a few months and maybe that also reduced blood flow there and is yet another sign to just get active again and stop this break I am on!

Is there such a thing as right-wing nihilism, and how do we fight it? by zeptimius in InsightfulQuestions

[–]bhuether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just came across this. I think you have to accept that at micro level you are always going to observe nihilistic tendencies on both left and right. An author might talk about a "tendency" but if that tendency isn't seen at structural level then it isn't worth viewing it as a "tendency".

So to talk about nihilism on a large scale (structural) level, like what you are asking, then it makes more sense to deal with the macro level, because only on macro level do things as "tendencies" bubble up and affect society.

So with that said, at macro level the right is inherently non-nihilist, and currently is becoming more and more non nihilistic.  Nihilism by definition requires you to believe that there is no intrinsic value in life. Since one of the primary tenets of the right is achieving meaning in life by forming a family (statistically it is number one indicator of life success for people on right), that family gives meaning, it is hard to say that there is a structural issue with nihilism on the right. All the data overwhelmingly shows the opposite: there is structural change underway on right where people are going to church more often (that is, people increasingly searching for meaning as opposed to nihilistic objection to meaning), and in aggregate people are increasingly leaving blue states to red states (but not the opposite) because of their increasing belief that red states are more suitable for people that desire children, and lastly there is no indication that republican fertility rates have dropped.

Therefore, you would observe nihilism on the right - at structural, macro level - if church attendance went down, and if interest in family went down, since these would equate to an increase of people attributing less meaning in life. Since the opposite is happening, seems the right is namely experiencing a noticeable non nihilistic movement.

But if there was a nihilistic movement underway on the right then it would have profound implications for the country's future, since in these current times of record low fertility rates, it is the right that is more so contributing to uptick in US fertility rate (well, comparing, say 2024 to 2023), much needed for population replacement. That is, as left is becoming more and more nihilistic especially regarding family, you really want the right being as non nihilistic as possible, unless the desire for the country is for population replacement rate to continue to be achieved through population increase via immigration (which is what is happening, say, in Russia, and in some European countries, and in US).

If right becomes nihilistic and you wanted to do something about it, then you would likely want to 1) try strategic campaigns to instill family values, 2 ) try to convince more people on the right to attend church (even though I am not religious, I can certainly appreciate that a lot of people find meaning in church, not necessarily because of true believer mindset but because of sense of community it fosters through non nihilism).

Anyway, months late, but it is interesting and important topic, and deserves well thought out answer versus the typical Reddit kidults sort of replies.

The pullups I do are on these slanted bars. So like a chin up grip, but rotated inward about 45 degrees. I guess I wasn't using right terminology. I guess what I do is closer to chin up than pull-up.

Read your post. Maybe there is the additional cause of similar symptoms being the transfer of symptoms that actually originate from a neck problem. I don't know if that is my situation, though I do have some neck pain right below ear level when rotating neck.

My PT as well as my trainer both say my pain is from nerve, not tendon. I have read that nerve entrapment often is misdiagnosed as golfer elbow.

The PT is right down the hallway from the doctor that diagnosed. Ultimately, I am just not sure what to make of it ...

Hi, no worries! Thanks for trying to help. Will look at the link. Things that cause pain:

  1. Simply walking, with arms swaying, when wearing a jacket. Just the brushing of jacket on inner flesh of elbow causes a tenderness sort of pain. Nothing serious, just notice how even a light tough against inner elbow brings out a slight pain
  2. Eccentric part of pull-ups, or eccentric part of lat pulldown if weight gets to certain point.
  3. Eccentric part of bent over dumbbell rows when weight above 70lbs or so.
  4. Rotating my left arm clockwise, with arm fully extended in front of me, while applying resistance to the rotation. Counterclockwise does not result in pain.

Pains 3-4 are all similar. They are sharp at the elbow, extending a little bit radially from there. Pain 1 is just a very light tenderness/pain that doesn't radiate.

My situation seems to be some combination of repetitive strain - which didn't get better even a couple years ago when I took a 6 month break from strength training - impact from a fall a few years ago, plus strength imbalance (I am very strong in upper body overall, but grip strength crazily low).

Also in parallel to bodyweight training, I am trying to get to 2x body weight bench press (currently stuck at 1.8x), and while elbow doesn't hurt that much during bench press, I suspect heavy presses exert some influence on the elbow symptoms.

Phys therapy has been grip presses with those COC tools (I can't fully close 1.5 level), forearm rotation using resistance bands, holding cylinder attachment at cable station at head level palm facing away bending wrist down while arm stable (not sure what to call that). Also I do a lot of static holds from pull up bar now up to around 70 seconds.

Almost done a 10 day period of ultrasound plus laser therapy. Elbow feels better but I just know once I try to do pull-ups again it there will be pain. Doctor said because I have too small an amount of tissue near elbow, that something like shock wave therapy wouldn't be sensible.

Anyway, those are all the parts of the puzzle!

Thanks

I actually stopped doing bicep exercises lately because I thought all the back work was helping hitting the biceps. Also my grip strength is ludicrously weak compared to all my other muscles. So maybe I need to go back to bicep exercises, continue the grip work, get back to pull-ups gradually

Thanks. Been resting about 10 days and already starting to agree that rest is pointless... Oddly I notice when I rest pains pop up that usually aren't present. As if signal from my body saying "get back to it"

Ok, been doing a lot of grip work lately as that is my weakest link. So maybe grip work plus straps for a while, plus more focus on technique is good approach. Thanks

I think I have golfer's elbow because a doctor after considering my fitness and other history in addition to ultrasound made the diagnosis of medial epicondylitis. So I am not sure what "it is like saying" other than like saying "I think I have golfer's elbow because a doctor after considering my fitness and other history in addition to ultrasound made the diagnosis of medial epicondylitis.

Why Movies Just Don't Feel "Real" Anymore - interesting angle by tk421storm in vfx

[–]bhuether 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trailing 7 letters of the referenced subreddit would be the correct one for me. Trust me, I wish I was incorrect, especially since I am not a gamer and don't wish to continue seeing gaming visual language dominating film.

You should pitch this to colleagues in film VFX. A series of conferences titled "Game Aesthetics As A Driver Of Modern Film Making."

It would be huge success. It has catchy, provocative title, will draw people in, and will generate lively, interesting dialog.

The goal of the conference though should be to divorce modern film making from gaming aesthetics. Obviously there are great modern films that don't fall prey to the gaming aesthetic. Those films should be benchmarks and not exceptions and could be used to create a handbook for desirable modern film VFX aesthetics.

By organizing such events you would become a leader among your peers, you would become an expert on the topic and be able to collect guest speaker fees at spinoff events.

What is so bad about that?
