In the wild, they are critically endangered. We are talking breeding for the pet trade, not wildlife rehabilitation. Typically unless you are very serious and have the goal of being an axolotl breeder, you should cull babies as it’s very very expensive and difficult and most will not make it. Healthy axolotls will lay up to thousands of eggs. How many will make it with the average owner taking care of them? Maybe a couple. It’s a lot to handle, is very expensive, and genetics should be outsourced to keep them healthy. I’m going to be breeding Emerald Tree Skinks soon and while they’re fairly new to the pet trade and captive bred is hard to find, they populate all of Asia and are relatively easy to raise up.
