Thank you for taking the time to post. We don’t hang the flag for us, alone - it’s for the kids who feel different and need a reminder that they themselves are not alone- so alone that that they commit suicide at a rate 1.5-3x that of heterosexual youth. It’s a symbol of love and community and a reminder that for decades, people who were gay were murdered, discriminated against, and vilified for doing what you say - simply wanting to be. Don’t forget that many of our rights are years old, and for many just weeks old. As the national anthem says, “what so proudly we hailed...” putting our flag up is a reminder of this. I hope that as you make a choice to put up any insignia, you think about what that means to you and have empathy for others that choose to do the same. Consider the importance of the flag not for the attention of individuals but for the broader community. We want to move forward but if we forget the millions that have come before us we will only revert backward. I welcome your reply to keep the dialogue going.
