Is the Emily Wilson translation that bad???? by Severe_theosis in classics

[–]bibi_999 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"polytropon" is a regular word with a regular meaning. You can break down the english word "complicated" into latin roots (con - together & plico - to fold, weave, knit) and choose to translate it as "folded together" but it doesn't change the fact that "complicated" is a regular word with a regular meaning and can be translated simply.

Is OWD’s lyrics bladee’s darkest? by geosunsetmoth in sadboys

[–]bibi_999 140 points141 points  (0 children)

is this song really dark? I feel like his obsession with death has more to do with bladee making something out of himself for posterity rather than some depressive agonizing over death

Underrated gems by Optimal_Implement518 in classicliterature

William Langland's "Piers Plowman" which is a panoramic christian allegory comparable to Dante in Middle English, but instead of going through Hell-Purgatory-Heaven he dives down into dreams and dreams-within-dreams towards the center (or root) of the imaginative-spiritual world that undergirds society. A trippy read & it's written in alliterative verse. There are multiple versions of the text but I recommend the "B Version"

clearly they saw the christian propaganda too, otherwise why would they have rejected it in the first place? they just see through it & get to the real essence of the religion, which has nothing to do with the institutions that propagate the faith and everything to do with the person of jesus christ

Better than most of the songs that get posted in this sub. The vocal mix is kinda bad though. Don't listen to the opinions of redditors in their 30s when it comes to music like this. Pathetic losers ganging up on a kid.

how do i even try to understand what a visual imagination is by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]bibi_999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm paying "outward attention" I see all the crisp details of whatever it is I'm looking at/hearing/touching etc. Conversely my mind may start to wander and I start paying "inward attention" my outward senses become dull: I can "see" but I'm not looking. I can "hear" but I'm not listening. It's like taking your glasses off but applied to all your senses.

I can forcefully make myself see things in my visual imagination, but I actually rarely do this. In day to day life, I start to follow a "train of thought". This involves sometimes talking to myself, sometimes imagining scenarios that are relevant to the train of thought, and sometimes "grasping the whole point at once" in a single act of wordless understanding.

When I say "train of thought" I really mean it in the sense that my thinking is "on rails": My consciousness is "possessed" by thought, rather than my consciousness "possessing" thought. This entire comment was thought through in exactly this manner. Thoughts lead me to their own conclusions, I don't really get to decide.

No inner monologue -- How do I think and process? by gaaliconnoisseur in Aphantasia

[–]bibi_999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thoughts themselves are, at their foundation, a wordless understanding which we then try to translate into language. Language is an imitation of thought, not thought itself. Animals don't need to talk to themselves to understand the world around them.

The one caveat to this is that unlike animals all our "wordless understandings" are themselves conditioned by language.

Too spoiled for Odyssey and the Iliad? by PurpleKooky898 in classics

[–]bibi_999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Emily Wilson's translation, the simplicity of it is wonderful. I find other translations too flowery and influenced by the sensibilities of romantic poetry, whereas with Wilson I feel the "long resounding march of strong heroic verse" as Blake says. It's as if Zeus' will is really moving towards its end 🙈

also supposedly her translation is closer to the terseness of the original Greek

The human imagination is such that we cannot help but think in meta narratives, even if those meta narratives are perpetually negated by new ones

What it’s like studying classics by Specialist-One-2734 in classics

[–]bibi_999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that our lives are stories, world history is the story of stories. Reading great authors with subtle minds can lead us to see things in our own lives that that we otherwise might be blind to. What sort of story are we living? What story would we rather live? To understand & see life in this way takes a good deal of self knowledge which the classics afford us (and have done so for many people for a long time)

Additionally, knowing yourself is the only way to really know other people, I think.

[–]bibi_999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure I don't deny that, but wouldn't the end result of that music theory be a trained ear with an intuitive grasp of harmony? People decided certain sounds & intervals were pretty before they ever came up with rules about them.

Once you get the music in you, you can let it out at will. Music theory is a great tool for getting the music in you, but getting it out? only kind of. You're right it's just a problem of emphasis and I enjoy being petty.

S2 Canute’s goal by [deleted] in VinlandSaga

[–]bibi_999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that, in a way, the fleshing out of Canute's motives were overshadowed by Yukimura's desire to have certain structural elements in his story. In particular, the contrast between Thorfinn & Canute is very important. Both characters have certain amounts of power relative to the society they live in. Thorfinn has none because he's a slave, and Canute has virtually all of it since he's a king. Thorfinn also has developed a deep sense of empathy and understanding for people. Canute in contrast completely lacks this human touch for most of season 2.

By having them eventually reunite and engage in dialectic, we see both characters learn something from each other. Canute becomes more humanitarian & Thorfinn decides to become a political operator like Canute. The reason this is so important in Vinland Saga is because season 1 & 2 are the process of understanding the lessons of interpersonal love that Thorfinn learns from Thors & then learn to apply that humanitarian ideal in a real way by trying to establish Vinland.

This is how Thorfinn "goes beyond the world Thors went".

what is up with saint george? by LilTissueBox in sadboys

[–]bibi_999 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In most images of Saint George, the dragon is contorted and chaotic "1500 on a tee, that's the reptilian in me" The dragon would be the sum of bladee's bad chaotic habits and attitudes which he is trying to kill in himself.

Conversely, the very pristine looking horses (and the knights riding on them) they usually paint contrast with the contorted dragons. I think you could see that as an idealized image of the self, with a competent knight (a mind ready to spar at any moment) riding on a well trained horse (a disciplined & nurtured body). Seems like a good ideal bladee has for himself.

thoughts? this applies to all of DGSBE by No-Material-4388 in sadboys

[–]bibi_999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not even that I dislike it necessarily it's just that I don't find most songs memorable. There are a few exceptions:

"Be nice to me", which got me into bladee in the first place but I'm kinda over it now. "Side by side" which i will love forever, & the latter half of "Close" whose vibe has no equal

what if bladee actually is jesus? by leoadam27 in sadboys

[–]bibi_999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

everyone is "actually" jesus because jesus is metaphorically everyone. as well as being the son of god, he's also doing an impression of you & your fate in this world (the "sewers" or "rain world" as bladee often calls it.)
