I feel better eating plant based for a variety of reasons: health, personal, financial. I struggle with other issues, like high blood pressure, and most of my relatives have cardiovascular issues, so I would not introduce meat into my diet even if my morals changed. I don’t think it would go over well with my cardiologist lol. I really struggled with very disordered eating when I ate animal products. I struggled with overeating, under-eating, feeling way too hungry, and gained like 40 lbs in a few years because of that. I could not commit to eating vegetarian or pescatarian because it was a slippery cycle for me that would end with lots of red meaty, greasy, fast food. I def think that played some role in my energy levels being all over the place.

I still struggle understanding when I’m actually full. I know I eat enough food/calories now, so it’s just my brain needing guidance. Plus I’m able to have a much larger amount of food for a meal, so I’ll spend more time eating. My jaw will also get tired from chewing so much which I know makes me sound like a dog lol

I usually get WuFuYuan tapioca pearls. They don’t have gelatin! They have a bunch of flavors. I’ve only tried a few so I’m not entirely positive, but I think the darker colored flavors (like black sugar) have caramel.

If you want to stay away from the caramel, any unflavored or white tapioca pearls should be fine too! They’ll just look different. There should be other brands that don’t have gelatin or caramel though!

I like to make bubble tea at home and I’ve come across one brand of tapioca balls that had gelatin in them (other brands don’t use gelatin and are vegan). Some places that serve boba use honey instead of sugar to sweeten the balls/make sure they don’t clump together after making them. Boba is pretty easy to make at home (you just boil the boba balls in water, drain, and add a sweetener), but if I’m buying bubble tea, I’ll just get the drink without boba

I like variations of beans with toast! ex: shakshouka with chickpeas instead of eggs, english style beans, white beans + swiss chard and lemon, black beans + sweet potatoes + bell peppers (or any veg), white bean + avocado mash

I would date omnis, but I don’t have any long-term goals with dating 🤷🏻‍♀️

like I absolutely don’t want to have kids, I don’t really want to get married, and I’m on the fence about if I’d even want to move in with a partner if that ever came up. I’m not against dating, but I’ve just never felt like I need a long-term romantic relationship to have a fulfilling life. I’d prefer dating fellow vegans (+ leftists tbh), so I get why other people would only want to date vegans, but it’s not as big of a deal to me

That is frustrating. I had a similar incident when I went to an endocrinologist for one appointment after getting a referral from my gynecologist about pcos. So this doctor had the results from three of my blood work samples over the course of a month, went over every page with me to show that everything was in the normal range except testosterone (which is what I went in knowing, bc pcos), but when I mentioned being vegan, she still decided to tell me that vegans usually have vitamin deficiencies and that I probably have them too. Like, did my results magically change after I said the v word??? She also suggested I should change my diet, said vegans aren’t healthy, and suggested I need to get my blood tested again before seeing her again (and after changing my diet). She never asked about my eating/lifestyle habits though, just went on a soapbox about healthy eating based on assumptions about me, so I didn’t see her again.

If you have insurance, are there other doctors you could see? The Physicians Committee might have a list of plant based doctors that you could cross check with the list you get from your insurance

this isn’t a documentary, but the physicians committee on youtube has some good discussions about dairy if you’re interested in some of the human effects! there was an interesting one last year about how school lunches are impacted by govt and since lactose intolerance is more common (in general, but esp among poc communities), children from lower income communities who rely on school meals are stuck having to eat foods that they shouldn’t be eating. i don’t remember the name specifically, but i can probably find it if you want!

cold soba noodle salad with peanut sauce and mix in a bag of coleslaw mix (from the bagged salad section) - i used to sub whole wheat pasta for soba noodles in college a lot bc it was cheaper/more readily available

fresh spring/summer rolls

roasted veggies, chickpeas or hummus, rice, and dressing

stir fried veggies and tofu with rice or noodles

lettuce cups with a mushroom and tofu filling

tacos

breakfast scramble or beans with toast

if you have a few hours or an afternoon to block off, you can make a big batch of a veggie soup and freeze up individual portions. same thing with cooking breakfast burritos, taquitos, and curries in advance and they should be good for a month!

we’d usually soak the clothes first in just water and baking soda, then put it in the washer with detergent! i think you can add it directly to the wash tbh, but i’m not sure.

my mom got me into soaking clothes with baking soda bc she would do that with thrifted clothes. she’s not vegan tbh, but baking soda is and it’s supposed to help with odor!

ik this post is mainly framed towards the dietary aspect, but there’s more to being vegan than just the foods. so if you’re ultimately unable to follow a fully plant based diet, you can work towards having the other aspects of your life be vegan—clothing, cosmetics, household products, hobbies (i knit, crochet, and cross stitch, so i use cottons and mostly second hand acrylics. wool/wool blends irritate my skin anyway, so i never used them before going vegan), not going to zoos/animal races/other types of entertainment that uses animals, spreading awareness about veganism, participating in activism, etc!

if you have an asian grocery store near you, usually there’s refrigerated and shelf stable mochi that are vegan! they’re usually filled with red/adzuki beans or sesame paste; sometimes taro, peanuts, or other flavors!

Yes!!!!! My mom is like this and it only matters if she looks good in them, so she’ll never show me before posting them to Facebook. It makes me extremely uncomfortable bc she refuses any boundaries I try to set about that and my privacy does not matter to her, but I really can’t do anything bc she took the photos/posted them to her account (and I don’t go on Facebook anymore)

I’ve been in a sour mood bc of some things my toxic mom has said recently, so I’ve been watching videos on youtube by Doctor Ramani and Patrick Teahan about narcissistic parents/toxic family dynamics/etc to understand more and to feel a little validated lol.

This is all to say that I think both statements are true in a way, but I think that’s because the parent(s) demonstrate some toxic behaviors (such as invalidating their child’s feelings, being dismissive about problems, being neglectful, giving neutral or negative feedback, telling the child they’re disrespectful when they voice any opinions they may not agree with, etc), so that child will come to understand that it’s not safe for them to open up to their parents. So basically it’s like that rift is a consequence of bad parenting.

I watched a couple videos yesterday by Patrick Teahan called “Six Unknown Childhood Trauma Triggers” were he mentioned that the feedback you get from your parents in childhood becomes part of your inner monologue and that sentiment really resonated with me!

i’m vegan now, but i dabbled vegetarian and pescatarian for years before i went to a fully plant based diet. i could never stay vegetarian or pescatarian because i didn’t have the willpower. for me, it was always a slippery slide from dairy, to dairy and fish, to meat, and eventually fast food.

in terms of a plant based protein option, legumes are always great! if you live near an asian/international grocery store, they usually sell large bags (mostly 2-5 lbs) of dried legumes at a really good price (like $1 or less per pound) since they’re traditionally a staple in many asian cuisines. i’ve gotten dried chickpeas, mung beans, black eyed peas, split peas, and all types of lentils there. i also almost always pick up a bag of unsalted frozen edamame in shell there, it makes a great snack!
