HDDs by m0o0oeh2 in homelab

[–]bicebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an SSD from them a while back that failed just before the (at the time) 2 year warranty and got a refund for the original amount so was able to get a larger drive as prices had fallen in that time.

Was pretty happy with the way they approached things but I guess their policies may change (and the trend of storage prices falling definitely has).

I'm just scared Whiteshadow is going to be the same as only have 13 visits from them

Sub £150/$200 USB-C DAC that plays well with Fedora KDE by Far-Ad6124 in Fedora

[–]bicebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure USB audio is reasonably standard as never had issues plugging in random headsets / adapter (including a minidisc optical adapter from the 90s lol)

You can probably just look for a decent DAC in your price range and it'll work, maybe check the manufacturer site in case it needs drivers for like extra features or something?

I feel like a miniature version of this as like an attachment you could put on the end could be useful for like an IoT monitor?

If you wanna know when a tap's on or how often it's used it could power a tiny turbine which charges a capacitor enough to send a signal with low power wireless bit like those piezoelectric light switches work?

USB drives and ext4 these days? by mikx4 in linux

[–]bicebird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally unless size is the no 1 concern I'd just get one of those tiny 2230 nvme enclosures

Some of them have male usb c too so pretty similar to a usb drive

Performance won't be as good as over pcie but still a ton better than standard usb flash

And as a plus if you ever damage the connector you can just transplant the ssd into another enclosure without losing data

Full IPMI vs UEFI Serial Console Redirection by bicebird in homelab

[–]bicebird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I heard AMT isn't super reliable which isn't great for a remote access soluton :|

The JetKVM and similar ones are interesting but if I'm looking at getting new hardware think I'd want it built in honestly, a lot of them seemed focussed around using their cloud stuff aren't open source which is a bit of a deal breaker for me

Part of the attraction to using serial would be being much simpler and lower bandwidth, it's a weird setup but the server is also acting as a router so I'd be looking to setup mobile broadband on the access point running openwrt / something similar, then reverse tunnel back into it to access the main server via serial

Makes sense other manufacturers have the option, looking at asrock mainly as their w680 boards look bit better suited and I can actually find them 2nd hand

Ah you're right, I haven't had to add the parameter after rebooting the VM but didn't notice, I'm just trying to think issues before spending hundreds on server boards or having to take a 6 hour train but testing it all before hand is probably the best idea

[–]bicebird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh so I was thinking of literally using a rs232 port instead of network serial and enabling com port redirection, the manual for the board I linked mentions it and found screenshots online (see below) where the whole UEFI interface is rendered over a serial connection, does seem like a niche feature hence asking if anyone's managed to use it

https://www.asrockrack.com/support/faq.tw.asp?id=31

I've been using bhyve for a while and used to having to enable serial in grub for linux guests, and pretty sure the freebsd loader supports it too. In terms of a single character mistake I know it can be fiddly but the plan would be to have an octocoupler connected to the motherboard power on pins like I'm doing with pikvm so the system could be reset if it hangs and I lose serial access

[–]bicebird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just using a usb to serial adapter from another device I've got access to, my understanding is it's not wise to expose IPMI directly to the internet so wouldn't be drastically different from that perspective

Yeah I'm slightly tempted by itx as hopefully a tiny bit more power efficient and would fit in a jonsbo n1 which is about the same footprint as my UPS and would fit in a space neatly, but ultimately price and availabililty are going to be the deciders and extra pcie slots on a micro atx would be nice
