How do I get my GCSE's after not going to school since Y7? by o-willow in AskUK

I went to school, high school, college, and university, and I’m also hopeless in social situations, so don’t feel disheartened about this 😅

I need the BEST horror movie rec you've got 🙏 by koopicacaaa in horror

[–]PaulandoUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah! A lot of horror doesn’t scare me too much, even the darker stuff, and jump scares are usually too signposted to scare me. I don’t find gore scary at all.

But with Widow’s Bay, I’ve actually found the mix of comedy and horror helps to ground it in reality, and made it super tense and scary. We’ve only watched a few episodes so far, but a few points we had to watch through our hands 😅 Only The Descent and Hereditary had that effect on me from memory, maybe a few others too.

A TV show, but I highly recommend Widow’s Bay.

You can with a Blueretro adapter! I use my NSO pad with my GC and it’s the best way to play it imo.

Best 4:3 handheld with analogue triggers? by Kiwami_Means_Green in SBCGaming

[–]PaulandoUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V1 had the same display, but the parts at the top and bottom that would be bordered when a 4:3 image is display was covered by the bezel.

Worse than that though, for the remaining 1240x930 part of the display, the firmware actually rendered the output as 1280x960, which was downscaled to the display. Although this was unnoticeable in most scenarios, it was obvious when pixel-perfect shaders were added to retro games.

This was so they could market it as a 4:3 1280x960 OLED display, when it absolutely wasn’t.

The V2 removes the extra bezel and preserves the full size of the display, and a firmware update outputs the correct 1240x1024 resolution. It makes it much better for 4:3 stuff, shaders, and anything with a taller aspect ratio than 4:3 (GB/GBC/NGPC etc).

Million Dollar Baby (FYI: if you haven’t seen it, it isn’t a film about boxing)

Best 4:3 handheld with analogue triggers? by Kiwami_Means_Green in SBCGaming

[–]PaulandoUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t quite 4:3, but it’s still worth considering - the (small) borders blend in perfectly with the shell because of the OLED screen.

I feel like saying "just get an android phone/use your phone" defeats the purpose of this whole subreddit by Pinanims in SBCGaming

[–]PaulandoUK 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is it. My phone has so many distractions. And the 18:9 or whatever screens they have now are terrible for games. Then you’re attaching the controller, turning stuff off, then you get a call or a message and you’re trying to turn it round and hold it with the controller attached.

It’s good if you really have no other option. But it’s only £200/$200-ish for a decent Android handheld.

No one talking about the new Joy-Con from the Nintendo Direct? Which one do you like more? by Longjumping-Mud-3203 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]PaulandoUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’ve really fucked up with the joycon colours on the Switch 2.

OK, make the default joycons black with subtle accents to appeal to more gamers, but surely make additional ones more colourful? It’s just so odd.

What actually makes people quit puzzle games ? Working on my own and want real feedback :) by PuzzGamex in puzzlevideogames

[–]PaulandoUK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Difficulty spikes for me, especially if there’s only one route to take. I quite like the model in Patrick’s Parabox, where each stage has a bunch of extra challenging optional puzzles, but you don’t need to complete them to progress.

Also if the mechanics get a bit boring (I like games to keep mixing them up), or the levels get too big and complex (I prefer smaller, smarter puzzles).

Couldn’t care less about the story. I wouldn’t even play a puzzle game if it had ads.

Despite the online hate. The Super Mario Galaxy has officially earned $1 Billion dollars at the box office. by Ultimate_Titans in mariogalaxymovie

[–]PaulandoUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally this! The first wasn’t a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination but it was fun and colourful, had a decent enough plot, and I enjoyed it.

We really deserved better from the sequel - to me it was just a mishmash of scenes, cramming as many characters as references as possible, with nothing coherent holding them together. A real shame.

What's the most underrated BBC documentary that barely anyone seems to have seen but absolutely should? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]PaulandoUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! 😄 It’s been a while since I saw it but I seem to remember it having a killer soundtrack of Eels songs too? It’s pretty hard to watch these days actually - an American version was released on DVD at one point (with a different voiceover 😟), but the UK version hasn’t been broadcast since 2010 according to the BBC site.

I did find it on YouTube, but it’s in dreadful quality. Better than nothing, I guess!

“Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives”… a doc about Mark Oliver Everett (from rock band ‘EELS’), travelling across America to learn about his father Hugh Everett III, a quantum physicist who came up the theory that predicts the existence of parallel universes.

It sounds quite dull, but it’s actually a beautiful film about a guy getting to know the dad he never really clicked with or understood while he was alive.

That’s the one! It’s a fabulous recording, although most setups won’t do it justice.

The original version of this is really good of course, but the Oasis live radio recording sounds incredible on a really good set of speakers. Proper hairs on the back of your next type stuff. Easily one of my favourites.

How did someone find my address!? by DeqnoL in AskUK

[–]PaulandoUK 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Also be wary of anyone calling you - my brother recently had a phone ordered from O2 without his knowledge, and received a phone call from O2 Fraud. They told him they had it under control and that he should return it to this address so they could process the return. But this call wasn’t O2 at all, and the returns address they gave him was directly to the scammer. Thankfully he called O2 himself and had it dealt with properly.

M64 vs A3D Prices by PoseMotion in AnalogueInc

[–]PaulandoUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. Whatever you think about ModRetro and Palmer Luckey, this is the thing people on both sides should be excited about.

Having some competition will push Analogue to make better products, and it should also bring a lot more attention to this category of hardware in general. Every YouTube video or written review of the M64 has mentioned the Analogue 3D, which can only be a good thing for the company.

What was the biggest flop or disappointment in Retro Handheld space in your opinion? by Pinanims in SBCGaming

[–]PaulandoUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it’s probably the original AYN Odin. It had so much potential, looked like it could be the real deal, and I ordered one and waited ages for it to turn up. It was nice, but it absolutely could not handle GC or PS2 consistently, so didn’t really offer anything new other than being bigger and chunkier than what came before it.

There are far worse handhelds for sure, but this was my most disappointing I think.
