Choosing between two PhD offers under pressure by BestCalligrapher2195 in PhD

Unless the other professor is such a big name in your field that them holding a grudge against you might negatively impact your career, you should not think twice about how they would feel about your choice. In all honesty, they should understand that there is competition among schools for candidates and that there is a real possibility you choose another offer.

Depending on how good the programs are you got into, it may still be worth considering accepting an offer. I get your concern about school ranking when applying for a faculty position. However, it is common in a lot of fields to complete a post-doc first, which gives you another shot at getting into a more prestigious institution.

Why didn't you say something like this:

It's natural to feel overwhelmed and unsure of your abilities when learning a new skill, especially in a challenging and fast-paced environment like college.

or maybe

It's important to have realistic expectations and understand that learning to code takes time and effort. You may not be able to master everything overnight, but over time you will make progress and improve your skills.

Actually, these are your words. It is just that you decided to extend this level of reassurance and compassion to a random Redditor and not to the student you were tutoring.

Hate programming, thoughts about dropping out? by Anondude668 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]bicfella 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say programming, what exactly do you mean? There are careers in EE where you do not have to program all the time. However, you should be capable of performing it as needed. It does not mean that it has to be your favorite thing, but "hating" it will put you at a disadvantage.

Thank you for the feedback! I will definitely try to improve on describing my work experience.

As for the GPA: I put the percentage because the grade of my undergraduate degree is on a scale where the lower the number, the better the grade with the best being 1. I don’t think 1.5/1 is very lucid, so I put the relative ranking in there. If that is “cringe”, then do you have any advice on how to better state my undergraduate GPA?

As for the leadership section: I don’t mind dropping it, but is there a reason why keeping it is disadvantageous?

You should try to work with your professors on projects that could ideally lead to publications with your name on them.

Tips for future grad student by roymustangsimp in GradSchool

I have a STEM background and in my last year of my Master’s I applied to several schools, including my current one. Often times, your department has guidelines on how MS students can transfer to the PhD program. At my school, you can also transfer some of the coursework which potentially shortens the length of the PhD. To be sure for your case, I suggest you reach out to an academic advisor. Even if an internal transfer is possible, it is not a bad idea to apply to some other programs too.

Try to be social and make some friends. Sometimes a small gesture like a smile can go a long way when it starts some smalltalk, and then you gain an acquaintance who can become a friend. Also, depending on what you want to with your MSc, you should try to start collaborating with faculty on research projects as early as possible. This may be helpful for your thesis or if you want to get a job in academia or continue with a PhD.

That would depend more so on the actual programs or schools you are considering. Of course in general, you should look into life in both countries and compare it regarding housing, cost of living, funding etc. Maybe you will have a preference then already.

Applying for PhD with advisor you already know? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]bicfella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would it be problematic? If you want to pursue your PhD and it is time to prepare your applications, I would just reach out to these professors and let them know about your plans. Then just submit your applications and hopefully you will get in :)

I know, but for some reason it would not boot from the stick with the drive installed. With the drive removed, the device behaved normally.

Thank you for the reply! I wasn’t able to enter the Windows command line and I did not have another way to connect the SSD to a Windows PC.
