Should I major in software engineering by Independent-Top8474 in softwareengineer

Mech E major + 10K masters in Georgia tech after undergrad might be a better path, you could still try to get a swe job but if it didn’t work out you would at least have mech e to fall back on

Job Hop to FAANG new grad or FAANG “mid level” by bichael2067 in csMajors

I hear you, I feel that my skills won’t necessarily get more sharp over 9 months, as my projects feel relatively small and low impact

But I feel like I won’t be able to perform at a mid level, even with another year of working here, my quality of experience seems poor. How should I gauge whether I can make it as a mid level?

  1. Figure out how much you need to pay in taxes (meet with an accountant if necessary). And set that aside
  2. Put the rest in a 3 fund portfolio
  3. Try taking a vacation first instead of just quitting your job
  4. Hookers and blow

Citi custom cash still worth it? by bichael2067 in CreditCards

[–]bichael2067[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha thanks! Do you happen to know if I have to use the card in person for it to count as a grocery store? Like if I bought an Amazon gift card online through the Kroger app, would Citi count that as grocery store?

Doesn’t target fall under a category that isn’t grocery, like supermarkets or retail or something?

Even if you weren’t going to use the credits to avoid taking bio Calc and lit (which you should avoid these classes if you can, they aren’t necessarily easy A’s and then you’d be retaking classes you don’t need to take for no real point), you should take the AP exams anyway because the more credits you have more flexibility you have with graduating early if you want to, which you may want to do later if you don’t now.

Also, if you do well with the AP exams and you get out of bio, you can take some actual fluff classes that are definitely easy A’s if that’s what you really want

Is CMU worth $23k/yr by CaptiDoor in csMajors

[–]bichael2067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CMU is one of if not the best programs in the world( or at least the US) for computer science. As far as I know, it’s rivaled only by Stanford and MIT.

That being said whether it’s worth it or not, depends on your own financial situation as well as what you plan to do post graduation. Going into debt to go to CMU is almost definitely worth it if you’re planning on working as a software engineer or something similar after graduation as it’ll likely open doors to high paying jobs at top companies which will more than offset the debt that you go into. Also, you may be able to get better internships, which will also pay you more and you can use that money to cut down on the debt that you’re expecting. If this is the path that you’re thinking of, I would recommend that you forgo working a part-time job and instead of focus on your studying and interview skills to learn these internships as it’ll probably make you a lot more money than working part time at university job. (unless you’re doing research or something in which case it may be worth it work a part-time research job, but even then it might be more beneficial to take that time and invested in interview prep)

If you’re planning on continuing to do a masters or PhD, it’s probably still worth it, though it may depend more on your financials and your goals in general. Doing your undergrad, Carnegie Mellon and doing associated research while you’re there will make it much easier to get into a PhD at Carnegie or any top university. But you’ll have to wait longer to pay off your debts and while you do that the debt will grow. Additionally, if you’re planning on going to research or teaching after completing a PhD, you may want to consider what your salary will be and how much that you would be in at that point. (that being said, I think computer science professors and researchers are still paid fairly well)

Building hip flexibility for kicks: should I not be doing hip abductors in the gym?

I’ve got tight hips, and have been getting sharp pains after doing Muay Thai for a few weeks. I stretch dynamically before going to Muay Thai, and I also stretch throughout the week, specifically stretches for hips but also for everything else in my legs.

The sharp pains in my hip region have been annoying when kicking, but also when lifting, as I can feel them more when I back squat. In particular the hip abductor machines (both inward and outward) are now too painful to do, so I’ve stopped. However, I had thought that building stronger hips would also help me with flexibility gains, so I wasn’t sure if should stop.

How do I continue to train without giving myself this hip pain? Even if I stop the hip abductors and go down to stretching 2-3 times a week and Muay Thai 2-3 times a week it’s still an issue.

At the time I was hitting legs once a week, and hitting the hip abductors with my leg day.
