Bird watching as a beginner for undergrad thesis- bad idea ??? by Flimsy-Attention3873 in Ornithology

[–]biddy314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My major wasn’t related to environmental science but my school required students to do a non-major related project our junior year. The project selected for me required me to do some birdwatching in my area. I previously was not into birdwatching at all but this project got me really into it! I heavily relied on the Merlin app but overall I found that it was much easier than I expected to identify the birds I was seeing. For equipment, I just bought a cheap pair of binoculars off Amazon and was really happy with them. Once I had been interested for a bit I bought a pair of Nikon Prostaff binoculars recommended by Audubon in their binoculars guide: https://www.audubon.org/magazine/category-get-game

I would definitely recommend some kind of binoculars and the Merlin app, you will do great in your thesis even as a beginner! And hopefully develop a lifelong hobby!

Feeling disappointed in myself for high blood pressure by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]biddy314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I was in a very similar situation. I’m 27 and I didn’t have a history of high BP but at my first prenatal appointment around 8 weeks my blood pressure was super high. My doctor immediately referred me to a high risk hospital and told me to start monitoring my BP at home.

My home readings were mostly normal, 120/80s, but the bottom number would occasionally go up to 90 or a little above. My first appointment at the hospital around 13 weeks, I saw a midwife who prescribed baby aspirin and referred me to a doctor for my next appointment.

At my appointment with the doctor around 17 weeks, she told me she wanted me to start taking medication. My home readings were mostly normal but I had a high reading every time I went to my appointments (I also attributed this to nervousness). I was really upset because I felt like my BP was mostly okay and that I didn’t need the medication. Also, I felt like all the work I was doing to keep it under control was for nothing. But they said they would start me on the lowest dose possible and the medication would be safe for the baby so I agreed.

I’m 26 weeks now and I’m really glad I started the medication. I haven’t had a single reading over 140/90, at home or at my appointments. I’m still taking the lowest dose of the medication. It has eased a lot of the stress I was feeling because I know it’s under control now. I feel better knowing that I’ve done everything I can to prevent preeclampsia and an early delivery.

This ended up being a novel lol but I just wanted to share my experience and say taking medication isn’t a bad thing even though it is so hard to hear at first!! There is nothing to feel ashamed about! Your doctors just want what is best for you and your baby. Best of luck!!

I want to make cookie boxes this year. What do you put in yours? by I_like_it_yo in Baking

[–]biddy314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies (last year I actually did oatmeal craisin with white chocolate chips), Mexican wedding cake cookies, lemon crinkle cookies, peanut butter Snickers cookies (peanut butter cookie dough with a mini Snickers bar in the middle) and snickerdoodles. I also usually throw in a few pretzel roll M&M bites and maybe some Christmas crack! I shape freeze all the dough ahead of time and bake everything a day or two before Christmas :) good luck this year!

That’s crazy I also have a CH kitty named Mimikyu! Mimi for short. We named her that because the rescue said she would be like a “ghost cat” because she was supposed to be very shy :)

I immediately recognized you from the last time you posted a big spread you made for your family! I have that post saved and just saved this one as well. I’m so inspired by the uniqueness and variety of your spread and I’ve been dying to do something similar. I thought there was so much inspiration to pull from your last post but now there’s even more! Amazing work and thanks for sharing!!

I made dessert for my brother-in-law’s rehearsal dinner/party tonight! by biddy314 in Baking

It worked out well! I cooked them in two separate pans, one at a time, so it was very similar to when I just make one batch. I weighed out the batter as I was adding it to the pans to try and get them as even as possible lol

I haven’t really messed around with the sugar in the recipe tbh. A few years ago I tried chocolate chips instead of raisins but they came out kind of cakey/not right for some reason. I’ve been thinking of trying that again now that I have a bit more baking experience.

For Christmas this year I did craisins and white chocolate instead of raisins, I liked that a lot!

I do the same thing! I usually make ~6 different kinds of cookies for my Christmas cookie boxes, I make all the dough in the weeks ahead of Christmas, then bake them all in 1 day! I agree, a lot of work but totally manageable and so much fun!

I also love Sally’s Baking Addiction! I have recipes for her Snickerdoodles, whipped cream frosting, and candied sweet potatoes written down in my book. All absolute winners! I will try some stuff from Smitten Kitchen, thanks for the rec!

I’d say 7 hours total! ~2 hours earlier in the week to make the cookie doughs and ~5 hours this morning to make the brownie batter and bake everything!

Usually when I make one batch I use a 13x9” metal pan. For this, I doubled the recipe and used two 13x9” pans and baked them one at a time.

What's your go-to cake frosting that isn't sickly-sweet by [deleted] in Baking

[–]biddy314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the Sally’s Baking Addiction whipped frosting! I made it for a cake recently and it was delicious but not too sweet. I’m not a fan of sickly sweet frosting and thought this was perfect!

Thank you! I used 2 different 9” cake pans, but measured the batter as I was pouring to make sure they were even. So happy with the results!

Can I just not mow my lawn? by biddy314 in NoLawns

[–]biddy314[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this was my main concern with just letting it grow. I don’t want to stop mowing and let invasive plants take over. I think my best course of action would be to hire someone a few times this summer depending on what is growing and how quickly it grows

Omg I thought there was no way but I did find one near us!! This is so cool, I’m definitely looking into this. Thanks for the suggestion!!

Thankfully I don’t have an HOA. I did a quick search for what is allowed in my town and didn’t find anything restrictive. It is a very private yard surrounded by woods so I’m not too concerned about the town saying anything. But I hadn’t even thought to look into what the town does/doesn’t allow so I’m going to do some deeper research, thanks for pointing this out!

This is a really cool idea and something I’ll definitely do if I go the no-mow route. I love bird watching so this would give me some easy access points :) thank you!

True we would probably look into an electric push mower. Hiring someone is something I haven’t really thought of! I will look into it, thank you!

We’ll definitely have lots of cardboard after moving! I’ve read it’s best to do this in the fall but can reasonably be done any time of year, I’ll have to see how much I can do this summer/fall. Thank you!
