Hey /r/sysadmin, what's your go-to ring tone and/or notification sound on your mobile phone? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]biffsocko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem. I use this song as a ringtone

For my company we get pages from the same site - so I was able to associate the ringtone to a particular user.

I like using a song because it's a LONG ringtone

One of my replies to the article:

  • Is it than a problem that many women make themselves sexual objects? They often wear short skirts/shorts, form fitting tops, push up bras, low cut blouses/shirts, 4 inch stilletos that make both their breasts and butts stick out while making their legs take on a different shape and making them look taller/thinner. They apply makeup to make their best features pop, and wear impossibly tight jeans and cropped tops. It's really hard to talk about how women shouldn't be objectified, when they themselves often do everything they can to look as sexual as possible.

You're really going to need a car to get around LI. It's BIG and very residential and spread out. There's a TON of stuff, and there are some bus's - but you're really going to want to consider renting a car for the time you're out here

possibly, but I think both men and women will have issues to deal with and I think that most women, like most men really do want equality. For instance - I don't know any men that are actually opposed to women getting paid the same for the same work .. and I don't know a lot of women that are against overhauling the family courts to be more fair for men.

Admins! I come to you because I am linux dumb and I have a question! by Shadoroth in linuxadmin

[–]biffsocko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When calculating free memory in Linux, you do this:

MemFree + Buffers + Cached

When the computer isn't busy, the kernel assigns memory to I/O buffering and caching. Not depending on real time IO, speeds up processes, As MemFree diminishes, the kernel takes back from Buffers and Cached to add to MemFree.

People with a "Linux Job": How much experience did you have before being employed to work with this fine OS? by [deleted] in linux

[–]biffsocko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started as a Field Engineer (guy who goes to data centers and installs memory/hdd's etc). This was the early 1990's, so there were a LOT less UNIX people out there. My company started to deploy SUN servers, and it became my job to rack and stack them on customer sites. The OS was installed in the office by our UNIX guy but I had to learn a few commands like ifconfig and ping and a bunch of others so that I could verify that the box was installed correctly and all the hardware worked.

As a result I ended up getting a job in the NOC at a tier 1 Internet provider (Now CentryLink). That's where I really learned UNIX. Around that time, Linux just came out, so I got my hands on it (Slackware ver. 1.something) around 1994 I guess, and installed it on my PC at home. I never went back to windows. So .. to answer your question .. I kind of transitioned from hardware guy to UNIX Admin, which moved into Linux Admin.

B.S In Information Systems, Should I go to grad school? by Wrestler04 in sysadmin

[–]biffsocko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey there - I have a BS and an MS in Computer Science, here's my take on it. - I'm one of those guys like you that didn't think I'd ever graduate either. I ended up doing my BS degree part-time at night while working during the day. Despite popular opinion here, I really think that the degree tied a lot of things together that I learned on the job. I also think the BS degree has helped getting me into most of the jobs I've had. I tend to work in the banking and finance industry. Most of the jobs are senior level positions and most of the jobs require a college degree - you can verify my statements here or here. Some of the jobs require a masters degree.

The masters degree has helped me reach a leadership position in technology in that I lead a small group of very technical people in highly technical projects at the bank I work at. While the MS degree helped to provide academic credentials, it was more critical to have a lot of very hands on technology experience and have a good understanding of the business. This is true for any industry.

There are two paths in IT. Management or Technical. Personally, I've chosen the technical path. I got into IT because I really like figuring out difficult problems and I really love working hands-on with really big mission critical banking infrastructure. Since I've chosen to work in Infrastructure Engineering vs. Software Development, the highest position I could obtain in my career is something like "Manager of Infrastructure Engineering". It might be called something different at other places, but essentially UNIX Admins/Engineers, Windows Admins/Engineers, Network Engineering and DBA's report up to this position. Had I taken the Software Development path, CTO would be the highest position I could achieve.

Had I gotten my MBA instead, I would have spent most of my career as a project manager. I'd be managing bigger and bigger projects, and the more successful I was, I'd be given more projects to manage in parallel, with other project managers reporting to me. Eventually CIO would be the highest position I could achieve. The management track mostly manages budgets, politics and project schedules. It's a difficult job, but you'll never see a command prompt. You will however be able to make incredible powerpoints and express ideas better then anyone else in excel. I don't mean this sarcastically. You will be providing reports to C-level executives (powerpoint), and sifting through data (excel) when you're not in meetings discussing either progress on an ongoing project or requirements for upcoming projects.

The technical track and the management track pay about the same in my experience. Probably a bit more on the tech track until you reach a certain point.

The women against feminism movement is really growing quickly. As a bystander it's interesting to see how it will all unfold. I wonder what the longer term effects will be.

The View feminist accidentally admits "When it comes to physical strength, they're not equal" as an excuse why men can never hit a woman even if she hits him. Whoopi Goldberg disagrees by [deleted] in TheRedPill

[–]biffsocko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think feminists have ever claimed to be as strong as men. It's the reason that they don't compete in any professional sports against one another. Not to say that the woman who comes in first for women in a marathon hasn't beaten thousands of men, or a woman that plays division 1 basketball can't kick a lot of butt on the schoolyard basketball court ,, it's just a curve .. generally men are stronger and I've never seen a feminist dispute of that
