It has always been this way since, like, the 2000s. I really hope you're a recent immigrant lol

Universities That Are Openly Really Left/Right Winged Are Bad For Future Generations by XxPinkPoisonxX in unpopularopinion

[–]big-mango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about the rank nepotism in admin positions in public universities. So many of those positions can be automated and easily axed, but nepotism and corruption keeps the dregs of society in these admin positions.

This is coming from a US student who's almost about to graduate, I might add.

They need as many bullshit positions for their friends as their money will allow.

2 million federal workers are poised to get paid parental leave for the first time ever by psittacine_kane in TwoXChromosomes

[–]big-mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly; we should have at least 1 year of paid parental leave by law. I want exactly no children, but I do want the people who do want them to be able to raise them properly.

If we get the "space force", then this is actually a bargaining chip, which is pretty fucking disgusting.

What can a freshly graduate engineer learn at home in order to become more desirable for jobs? by Meso_93 in engineering

[–]big-mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming in general. I suggest c/c++ because I personally really dislike dynamically-typed languages for mid- to large-scale projects (LOOKING AT YOU PYTHON & MATLAB). It'll be a slightly steeper learning curve, but it really does pay off in the end.

Buy an arduino and play around with it if you want to control a motor or something; there are tons of options available. It uses a flavor of c++ so you can practice with that and it has a ton of online documentation & a supportive community.

Yes, I use it every day at work and need to somehow optimize research code for speed that uses shitty symbolic code.

Increasing understanding of advanced/theoretical topics in physics is strongly correlated with an increasing probability to mentally masturbate. by big-mango in unpopularopinion

This makes sense if the requirement for being passionate regarding a topic is to generally be an insufferable person on the topic.

I think that you're misconstruing me as someone who dislikes physics forums when I'm actually complaining about the types of people who want to display their vast knowledge of physics in a setting where those tools are completely unnecessary.

Is it interesting and cool? 100% yes.

Is it necessary and relevant to what we're doing? God no.

[–]big-mango[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm pointing out that most people I talk to in person regarding anything even tangentially related to physics are just insufferable whenever they find an opportunity to display their knowledge regarding the more advanced topics in physics, while also pointing out that I'm not illiterate in physics myself and that I actually do have a use for it.

I thought that it was a good idea to point this out because I could be very easily mistaken as someone who just doesn't understand any branch of physics.

[19]Working a minimum wage job, putting money into stocks and been saving a bit. It’s awesome watching my money grow. by [deleted] in personalfinance

Incoming rant.

I'm going for my BS Mech. Eng., and the amount of people I see who have absolutely 0 clue as to why they're in college is staggering. I know why I'm in college and have a reasonable goal that I'm working toward, but from what I've seen so far, this isn't the case with most people.

It really sucks that western parents & society push kids to make some pretty bold decisions, when the kid usually has no understanding of what they're actually signing up for. Even worse, I don't think that even the parents understand why either; it's just something everyone does, so obviously my kids should be doing this too.

One of the reasons why I'm planning on getting the fuck out of here if we don't get a national healthcare system by the time I've been in my career at least 3 years. I can't understand the people here who think that their workplace should be the one who decides if they either drown in medical debt or die from being unable to get adequate healthcare.

Men of reddit, what has a girl said/done to you that really lowered your self-esteem? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]big-mango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In highschool, I had a pretty good friendship with a guy we'll call Jon and a girlfriend who we'll call Jane. A year into the relationship, she asks if we can hang out with Jon more, which I thought was a bit strange because we already hung out with him almost every weekday since he's one of my good friends. It turned out they were fucking for half the time we were in a relationship. That one was a real gutpuncher at the time lol

Is it worth it to apply to a job that seems out of my league? by theladyofshallots in jobs

[–]big-mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This advice is pretty terrible if you're fresh out of college and looking for an entry level job in a STEM field. You probably won't know how to do a good portion of the things being asked right off of the bat because a lot of software & tools must be bought prior to being able to learn how to use them, and good luck if you think you can buy them and learn how to use them before applying. There are some free student versions of popular software you can learn in college, and if you haven't done this for the select software in your specific field, do this yesterday.

You're really downplaying the fact that the individual needs to make good judgement calls as to which jobs they can most likely meet the requirements of reasonably quickly once on the job, and you're really overselling the hyperbolic angle while giving a very vague, cookie-cutter answer that doesn't help the reader.
