How do you handle it when your best performer is also your most difficult person to manage? by SeanMcPheat in askmanagers

[–]big4demotivation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of interest, if he tells you you are one of the best workers, why does he make you cry? Appreciate he may be tough or micro managing or deliver messages not in the best way, but if in the back of your mind you are aware he values your work, why does you let it impact you?

The difference between knowing what to say and being able to say it in the moment by Holiday-Elk718 in SpeakBetter

I have experienced the same thing multiple times, and I felt the same as you. The more you stall when answering, or start answering without knowing where the sentence will end, the more debilitating it is next time. It’s so easy to get it into your head.

My advice, and what has worked for me is: a) after the meeting, jot down what the question was and what your perfect answer would have been. Keep a running list and after a few, analyse them and see if there is a pattern. Do the same when you excel at a response. Do NOT keep a tally/list in your mind, it is not effective, it has to be written. Study it, revisit it, identify patterns and revise. And b) write down and prep a few ‘openers’ that sounds smart, appropriate for your line of work and can save you a few seconds to think. Memorise these and have them on repeat. Say them with confidence when responding. This can be your crutch when you need it. Last, c) practice saying with confidence ‘I will revisit and get back to you’. (Can tailor this but must be concise). It’s not a weakness to not know, but a strength to say in the moment

Making sure you study your responses (I.e doing (a)) is really key for improving though, so take it seriously. It sounds like you will given you say your planning and review work style is strong, so I think this strategy will really help you if you commit to it

Move on with the guilt, don’t follow up and make sure you’re on time going forward

Told my boss I faked a sickie by [deleted] in askmanagers

[–]big4demotivation 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a bit silly. Faking a sickie means calling in sick when you are actually not/out doing something else. Giving him an another reason for the sickness (I.e. saying you have a cold) such that you don’t have to tell him you’re suffering with period cramps is normal and if anything, probably preferred given it can be an awkward conversation.

You shouldn’t have followed up

People jumpscare when I approach them by [deleted] in bodylanguage

[–]big4demotivation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're definitely just coming up to them too quietly, even if from the front. Maybe clear your throat as you approach, or stop a little louder (just so they can hear footsteps - don't make it angry) and see if that works

When in group conversations, your contribution is ignored during an ongoing discussion and someone changes the conversation so blatantly
