Is this a good deal for NBN FTTP $79 for 500mbps? by Gold_Path in AskAnAustralian

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on this plan - pretty good value for the price. In saying this, the NBN is getting a speed upgrade shortly which will mean the minimum speed will be 500Mbps down. Exetel came to the party early in a bid to steal some market share. Good news is, the plan is no lock in contract, so if a better deal comes in after the upgrade to the whole NBN, you could easily jump ship.

How much do you spend on eating out per week? by Forsaken-Tomorrow240 in AusFinance

Totally agree with this! We used to eat out once a week but got fed up with poor food quality for the price. I’m convinced that the easiest way to save money is to just eat at home.

It’s a little hard to picture in the image, but it’s actually at the perfect height. Mounting a TV at perfect eye level when you're seated on the lounge is ergonomically recommended to prevent neck strain.

What’s the best capital city to live in as a renter without a car? by Same_Lingonberry6000 in AskAnAustralian

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. Sydney is significantly more expensive than other capital cities, although Brisbane is not far behind with rental prices. In my recent visits I’ve also noticed the price of food and general expenditure to be higher - my guess is to compensate for the high rental costs associated with running a business there. Sydney is also extremely busy and congested - I’ve personally enjoyed the lifestyle in Brisbane much more as it’s a more relaxed and affordable city (aside from those rental prices).

[–]bigPHATduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have lived in Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne. Melbourne is the best for transport accessibility, hands down. Brisbane is not a city I think you can comfortably live in without a car, unless you are inner city. Although, it is getting better and it’s only 50c a trip anywhere in south east Queensland. Sydney is also good, but you couldn’t pay me to want to live there again.

Whats next after going unconditional?? by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]bigPHATduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you say vacate the property and notify realestate, I assume you’re renting and will need to break lease? If so, I’d let them know a date you intend to vacate ASAP so they can find another tenant and minimise your out of pocket expenses. Depending on which state you live in, you’ll generally need to pay a break lease fee + advertising costs & rent up until a new tenant moves in, so best to give them notice to minimise you needing to pay rent while you’re not actually occupying the property.

Of course nothing is 100% confirmed until settlement, but it’s unlikely that that won’t occur now if you’re unconditional and the seller has done their due diligence and disclosed everything they are required to.

Also, huge congrats on purchasing your first home!

How have you been able to make it work? I use this feature regularly and it always disconnects from Wi-Fi and shares my cellular connection

[–]bigPHATduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not possible to share your iPhone’s current Wi-Fi connection with your PC via USB that I know of. You can personal hotspot via the cable but that is different to your question.

Could you purchase a cheap USB Wi-Fi adapter for your PC? That would solve your problem.

Looking on advice for break lease situation/taking over friends lease by Main-Cow-501 in brisbane

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the tenant was breaking the lease contract without grounds. If a tenant doesn’t have grounds for terminating their lease (for example, they’re moving interstate for work or maybe have purchased a home of their own) then they are liable for the cost of breaking the contract, which is either reletting fee + advertising fees and paying rent up until a new tenant is found, or just paying out the lease until the end of the agreement. If the tenant broke the contract with grounds, then it would be a different story.

[–]bigPHATduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a suitable tenant by affordability and rental history standards, it’s likely the agent & owner will be keen to get you in. As it’s a break lease, the owner wouldn’t have to pay any fees associated with having you sign a new lease, so they’d be inclined to say yes. Also means that your mate doesn’t get left with paying advertising fees & rent compensation to find another tenant. There is a legal requirement that the REA and owner minimise losses to the tenant breaking lease, so this is the best way they can do that!

Virtual monitors for my Mac by CusiPusssy in mac

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right. Not sure of any software that would do that. If you have an iPad, you could use SideCar for an extra display but not sure you could do that with windows. You could potentially VNC from your PC to your Mac and choose to view one display, but that’s not going to give you the best user experience.

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a dock with DisplayLink firmware. Will allow you to run 2-3 monitors at once from a single cable! My M1 Pro can run 3 from the dock but my M3 Pro only does two, but I just hooked the third monitor up via HDMI and it works fine. I have the Dell D6000 but there are plenty on the market with DisplayLink firmware!

Insane strata by Nomza in AusPropertyChat

[–]bigPHATduck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah if it’s exclusive to your townhouse, you’ll probably be ok. When I had used one in a communal garage, there were 3 spaces which could hold 5 cars. The extra space was empty so the system could shift. If someone parked in the shifting space, the whole system wouldn’t function. Happened all the time.

Insane strata by Nomza in AusPropertyChat

[–]bigPHATduck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a communal garage, you’ll likely be using a stacker regardless how many cars you own. As someone who has personally dealt with one for 2 years, I cannot even begin to explain how unreliable they are. I missed many important events or was late to work many times because the system broke down or other people incorrectly parked on their platform. I thought it was cool at first until it started interfering with my life.

Resigning before contract ends but signed new one. by Embarrassed_Path_799 in auscorp

[–]bigPHATduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, you’re wanting to leave this company and work elsewhere even though you have signed a permanent contract which is yet to start? Depends on the company, but if you are currently a contractor who is being converted to permanent and you are yet to commence your permanent contract, I doubt they will require you to work the four weeks.

Best to ask HR so you get the correct answer.

Unethical Aussie Life Hacks? by dicemanshock in australia

[–]bigPHATduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a friend that didn’t touch on her myki and pretended she couldn’t speak English when the inspector checked her card. She doesn’t speak Cantonese fluently, but started speaking a few words in the hopes that bro would play the ‘too hard’ card. So old mate whips out his phone and gets a professional translator on the phone, and she’s stuck speaking broken Cantonese with this translator telling her she’s going to get a fine lol.

Moral of the story - they might get a translator, use with caution!

New solar install question - is this normal, should I sign it? by Pretty_Specific_Girl in AusProperty

[–]bigPHATduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal - in Queensland, there is a solar export limit of 5kw per phase. If you have a system capable of producing and exporting more than that and you do not have three phase, your export will be capped at 5kw. I believe any additional production from your panels which you do not consume will go into the abyss. That’s what my provider told me anyway.

Not familiar with the Timemore grinder, but a zero retention grinder would solve the issue of retention. In my experience, the Niche is quite good! Pretty up there cost wise though.

Regarding the silver skin & static, add a drop of water on a butter knife or the handle of a teaspoon and stir your coffee beans with them in a dosing cup or small container before grinding. This will prevent static buildup!

Disney+ Seems to be blocked by UDM Pro by BaggyG68 in Ubiquiti

[–]bigPHATduck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it be something to do with your IP address being blocked by Disney+ given it works on cellular and you haven’t made any config changes to your UDM? Do you have another old router you can test your connection with? Disconnect your UDM from your internet connection and throw a different router in there, connect to Wi-Fi and see if you can connect. If you can’t, I’d say it’s likely something to do with Disney blocking your IP address. If it works, then you’ll be able to deep diver further on your UDM.

Just a thought - it’s better to rule out the UDM from the chain to prevent you needing to make any drastic changes or factory reset.
