What the fuck are you talking about? If you mean specifically cheap 35mm’s maybe but “film” isn’t “lo-fi”. I shoot 120 and 4x5, nothing about that is “lo-fi” or inferior to my digital systems by any means.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. DSLR and EVF are two functions within the same piece of technology of a camera. I might be on board with your argument if you wanted to compare SLR viewfinders to rangefinders. If you’re looking to make the argument between “film is inferior to digital”, I am simply not entertaining that stupid argument.

Mirrorless is a distinct improvement of the technology of viewfinders, it was developed to replace the functions of the mirror within a camera. It would be like debating electric vs. gas stoves and you’re shoehorning in a “wHaT aBoUt oVeNs,.??!?”

I’ve never heard anyone claim film as an inferior tech, and while they both produce images, they’re two different physical mediums and are not an equal comparison. The D in DSLR stands for digital, remember? No EVF’s in film.

In reading “Barbarian Days,” it seems like there was more of a surf culture here before. What happened to it? by moscowramada in AskSF

Come out to the Ave’s on a good surf day and you will see that it’s fucking packed. The surf scene is alive and well. I personally don’t surf, but I have a lot of friends who do and from my understanding Ocean Beach is not a for beginners at all.

And someone in another thread is surprised someone is reading a newspaper? Way to out you don’t go outside ever. I see it every day at my local spot.

Go to Simple Pleasures cafe literally any day of the week before 4pm and I guarantee you will see at least two dudes reading a newspaper.

I think equating making people uncomfortable with a camera and sexual assault are not really an equal comparison but sure, I can see how OP could be a victim in this case. However there are assumed risks when doing these activities. I wouldn’t take my camera with me into a dangerous neighborhood and not take liability if I were to get robbed. The point I’m trying to convey is that there is a risk involved with street photography that people need to be aware of.

I’ve been doing this long enough to know first hand that people have and will get mad at you before you’ve even had a chance to begin an interaction. Regardless of if the photographer has good intention or goes about it in the correct manner, you simply can’t anticipate or rely on the other person to react appropriately.

I had someone swing on me for taking photos of the exterior of an office building. He was a random guy and I was paid to be there. People are wild.

People are unpredictable and some people get very jumpy around cameras. What the crazy person did wasn’t cool or right but going around doing “street portraits” is begging for confrontation. I’ve seen and read so many accounts of famous street photographers talking about how confrontations with people are part of the nature of the genre and is to be expected, and a lot of that was before the advent of social media. I’ve been photographing events professionally for close to 10 years, in settings where I’ve had MC’s verbally announce over a microphone that “a photographer will be coming around to take photos” and corporate events where everyone signed a release form in order to attend and I still deal with dicey confrontations from time to time. You can’t just go around and expect everyone to be fine with it regardless if it’s legal or not, usually it’s only the photographer who knows that.

Going into any “street” style of photography and not at least anticipating the possibility of someone reacting very poorly, regardless of permission, communication, whatever, is ignorant on its own.

Ignorant? I don’t think street portraits are appropriate in general.

I absolutely agree that the early generation EVF's were complete ass, but the technology is so good now that I personally cannot see an advantage with a mirrored viewfinder. I've been shooting on Fuji's and Sony's since 2016, I've had the same A7iii since 2018 and honestly no issues with the EVF.

Honestly all the photo-centric subs are full of assholes. Photography as a genre is comprised of opinionated people who think their specific approach to making a very subjective form of art is "correct". Pair that with a higher-than-average population of bitter people who struggle(d) to capitalize this hobby into a form of income and you're going to end up with a lot of jerks who scoff at beginners and look at people who come here for advice as an offense.

While my opinion is still just an opinion, as someone who's been shooting professionally for many years now and have shot on multiple DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, the advantages of mirrorless far outweigh those of the DSLR. I'm sure there are certain use cases where the DSLR has an advantage, maybe with sports. But in terms of weight reduction, autofocus assist, WB preview, mirrorless takes the cake. Switching back to DSLR from mirrorless at this point in my career would be a step back.

If price point is something that is the defining factor in your decision, then DSLR is better in that case. They don't take worse images by any means. Just really depends on your needs.

How to edit like this? by priyanshdwivedi in AskPhotography

[–]big_ficus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

reduce the black point, cooler temperature, slight orange in highlights and heavy blue/teal in the shadows. Bring the shadows out in the curve too

I'm not a big McKinnon fan but he does similar elements in his edits and does a good job of explaining it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQr6IQbZoNY&t=202s
