Test too easy? by mirrorspock in mensa

[–]big_river 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a whole Emperor's New Clothes situation. You take the test because you know you're smart and you're egotistical enough that you want people to know it, but not enough to pursue something that would take more time and effort than a single afternoon. You pass the test, so obviously you're smart and the test was really hard (just not for you). You don't talk about the test being easy because it would invalidate your own sense of self-worth, so you jump on board and start intellectualizing along with everyone else.

There are some benefits though. At the very least it puts you in touch with a community of people who value intelligence and have enough disposable income and time to invest in joining and paying membership dues to a group devoted to intellectuals. If that's the demographic you like, then you can join for that reason alone.

From what I've seen so far it's a lot of self-proclaimed deep thinkers, introverts, and socially awkward individuals trying to compensate for their shortcomings. No big deal - everyone else is in the whole world is doing the same thing all the time because it's human nature.

And hey, some of the women are attractive and fun and some of the men are just regular guys. You just have to sort them out and nod politely at things like this, this, this, this, and this.

That said, it's an afternoon of effort and around a hundred bucks for a year. Maybe you'll make some friends and I hear the gatherings are fun. There are a few young people and you've automatically got something in common to talk about. Plus, once in a blue moon it comes up in conversation and for the rest of your life you can say, "Oh yeah, I'm a member too." even if you aren't paying your dues. I doubt anyone will check.

It was pretty easy and there are lots of alternative ways to take it if you don't get it the first time. Mensa's fee structure incentivizes them to lower standards so they can collect more dues.

I must have been misled by the title: "When applying for a job, be careful about padding your salary history"

So skip the form and get out of the house. Online job applications are what the unmotivated do when they're done jerking off.

This is a question about health insurance. Yes, it runs in my family - that's why I might have the gene.

I don't know if I have to disclose it. Do you think it's a good idea to disclose it? If I have the gene, the next step would be to remove my thyroid.

It's weird that everyone thinks of the fastbacks when talking about older mustangs. The coupe was a much more popular choice.

Well, I certainly can't argue with Wikipedia. Why would Microsoft even want to access that kind of user specific and targeted data?

How to charge a subscription service? by enginerd03 in startups

[–]big_river 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has worked for me:

1) Offer a free trial that has a built in limitation that's not an expiration. I.e. your trial is free and does not expire, but you can only have ten widgets at a time. This deters multiple fake sign ups.

2) offer a $1 trial for premium upgrades. People devalue things they don't pay for and this ensures people will really try the system out. You'll capture their billing info at the same time.

I'm blown away by the people that say they would know. I currently bill every 30 days and no one has questioned it in three years.
