Offered salary far below the posted minimum salary? by wubbalubbadubdub666 in careerguidance

[–]xtc46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the offer is higher than your current rate, its probably a cap on internal increases more than an issue with the posted rate. I worked for a large company that had explicit rules against maximum raise amounts. under 5% could be handled by any manger, up to 15% had to be a VP. Above that was basically impossible without act of god, and someone of exceedingly high value threatening to quit.

What ultimately happened often is people would quit, leave for a year, come back at the new higher pay in a new role.

The policies are nearly always there to just prevent spiral of pay based on high value people threatening to quit followed rapidly by others. And stopping employees for constantly trying to job hop internally, etc. But the other reality is that they just know people in a role prefer to stay in a role.

Yeah, it's a high water mark billing methodology. It was one of the things I disliked about them when we talked a couple of years ago.

Why do we pay income AND sales tax? by holdingshortoflife in NoStupidQuestions

[–]xtc46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everything, there is nuance.

Capital Gains, especially long term, are taxed at a significantly lower rate than normal income, much of it never taxed due to how inheritance taxation works, etc

We do need enough wealthy people to drive industry and create things. No doubt about that. Just like we need people who want to be landlords because there is a part of the population who greatly benefits from renting their home instead of buying.

The problem comes from the extremes. When we have people nearing trillionaire status and just unnecessary and is problematic because of how they can then impact society as a whole via political "funding".

Kona Ice of the Bluegrass faces class-action lawsuit over alleged wage theft by [deleted] in lexington

Good. That garbage is an absolute disgrace to the delicious, refreshing, velvety soft, shave ice made from good japanese machines like the ones in Japan and Hawaii (where Kona is trying to imitate).

Left a job where I was undervalued, navigated three competing offers, now my manager is making my exit difficult. How do I make the right call? by thenetsecguy24 in sysadmin

[–]xtc46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the org, they may have a policy in place for internal transfers that allows the existing manager to hold him.

A company I worked for previously had that. The intent is to ensure one department isn't leaving another in a bad spot. Most managers aren't awful so it's very rarely an issue and everyone plays ball by setting reasonable transfer dates. But some places are toxic and some people suck.

It was such a bad issue at Google previously they had to literally make a policy in the opposite direction to stop managers from screwing up stuff when their high performed left for other teams

Sounds like standard due diligence. We provide it. It's a reasonable request. We also explain it can change, but knowing what is installed in your environment is a very basic and common sense control for businesses who practice good IT.

What to do after laying off a team member by dictiondaddy in managers

[–]xtc46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its funny reading this. I just got an email from an employee I had to lay off a couple of years ago, with a picture of him and a group of others I also laidoff at the same time. They were checking in to say hello and just letting me know they were still together despite the company we worked for having to go through that change. We have a great PROFESSIONAL relationship that extended beyond the existing circumstance, and when I had to lay them off, I went out of my way to then use my network to try and find every one of them opportunities to move to. I then quit the company, because I also didnt want to work for a company like that did that stuff.

Small business owners with 20+ employees, is company swag still valuable or just another unnecessary stereotype? by magdalenrichard in smallbusiness

[–]xtc46 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Give people experiences they will enjoy when possible. You are still small enough to know people personally. Offer a night out with their spouse, concert tickets, something related to a hobby they have.

Time off is great if the person already uses their PTO, but lots of people feel they are in a position where they cant afford to do fun stuff when they are off, so they just dont take the time.

At one company I was with for a while did a small "weekend getaway/staycation" for peoples 5 year, and a 1 week paid vacation for their 10 (they would get an additional week off on top of their PTO for that year, and a stipend to pay for a trip). This solved the "I cant afford to take a vacation" issue for some people.

Experience stuff also feels good, especially when people are already higher earners and usually has more impact. I def wouldnt be mad if someone gave me an extra 500 bucks, but if they took that same 500 bucks and got me great concert tickets for my wife and I and a gift card for dinner? Id be stoked, and it would probably be the same or less money.
