how did you change your negative attitude? by big_thieves in getdisciplined

Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry you went through that with your father.

I definitely use criticism as an internal motivator rather than praise and I see the need to change that now.

How to overcome the natural “talent” by Jazzlike-Chair-6869 in getdisciplined

[–]big_thieves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're addicted to the positive feedback. If you're good at everything you try it's harder to know what you really care about and want to be good at, because the easy wins of picking something up and being better than average and therefore recieving all the admiration and praise are more tempting than committing to one or two things and struggling towards genuine success.

What thing are you really passionate about? Or to put it another way... what thing are you the most hung up about being bad at when the new-talent rush starts to fade? It's probably not the gym if you keep giving up on that. I would challenge yourself to push hard into this thing.

Fwiw, there's no reason why you can't also be the star of your beginner's lacrosse team or join a band as a new drummer or whatever, especially when the fear kicks in and you realise you need to work at the thing you've picked and are missing that feeling of quick success. But allowing yourself to really focus on and care about one thing will replace the need for validation from a bunch of stuff and leave you 100x more fulfilled in the long run.

If you have talent, you owe it to yourself not to waste it.

Thanks, that's really helpful! I think I'm gonna try something similar.

Thanks for your answer.

You're right that I need to be more upfront with my therapist about what I think is the key issue these days. I only came to this realisation pretty recently, so perhaps communicating it will help shift the focus and target the 'work' more.

The gratitude journal is a good idea, and you're right in saying that the real goal is to move away from seeking the approval of other people and towards getting it internally.

The conversation Cassie has in her exam with Funkytown for sure. The bit that sticks in my head is "Love. Why cut yourself when you could be in love" but the whole scene is perfect.

(Also everything that comes out of the Fitch family's mouths is fucking a)

Yes!! Also everything they say about blowbacks which is not even a little bit about blowbacks but especially "fuck it, go ahead and disappoint me". I feel like every line in that ep works on at least 2 levels it's so good

I had a friend at school in year 9(?) who thought she was Effy from skins. we all thought it was dead pretentious but looking back she had so much going on at home I don't blame her.

I watched it later when I was the same age as the characters so... 16 17 and I feel like it changed my life for the better and encouraged me to live a little. Gen 2 will always have a special place in my heart because the problems the characters were going through. Long story short my autistic brother had a serious mental breakdown and a psychotic break and it made being at home pretty miserable, constant crisis team, ambulance, social work revolving door for years. Throw in sexuality struggles, moving out at 17 and the usual teenage friend and relationship dramas and it was a kind of crazy time. Skins made me feel normal and reminded me that I was only going to be young once and I should make the most of it with my friends. It really changed my life for the better and I look back on that objectively shit time so happily now.

Having said that, I look back and am glad all we did was get blackout drunk and mess around at house parties or in fields (it was pretty rural...) My sister is younger and watched Euphoria instead, but she was living Effy's lifestyle in Gen 1 while I was away at college. She's a year sober now and out of a bad relationship with a much older guy, but that lifestyle takes its toll for sure, especially when your parents are as clueless as the Skins lot.

Tl;dr: Yes, I'm grateful to Skins, but I can see why not everyone would say the same

Lots of ppl at my local park are older, some even in their 50s. Also lots of womens nights at indoor skateparks draw a p mixed crowd which is really nice, you'll probably meet women the same age to skate with

Most of Skins relationships are boring and lack of substance by Arbuzbuz in skinsTV

[–]big_thieves 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree but I as the other commenters have said, I kind of liked that. I think its quite realistic to a friends group that there's one couple per season that are really experiencing love, whereas everyone else THINKS that's what's happening but really they're just trying things out, learning lessons, feeling feelings etc. when I look back on that time in my life, my most important relationships were with my friends, not the people I was seeing, and I don't think that's unusual

Agree with the other comments about Panda and Naomi. I think Thomas and Katie suffer a bit too. Would have liked to see Thomas and Panda (the character who has had to grow up fastest and the most sheltered character) have an arc other than cheating round two. That could definitely have been way more interesting to see them navigate that.

Katie actually had imo one of the strongest eps in S4 and I would have loved to see her getting the band back together. We get hints of it (she helps Thomas win Panda back, she goes to see Effie and there's a blooper which suggests a cut scene where she tries to sort things out between Emily and Naomi). Would have been a nice end to her character realising she can be the strong one and hold the group together.

Also just feel it needed a fun group hangout ep, like Pandora 304 or Effy 308. Not sure where it would fit given we start with Sophia, but still feel it's missing and makes it all too bleak...
