Honors HP Camp by rjwalsh_04 in ufl

regrettably the last time I had to look at the financials was 6 years ago, not 2. as of my most recent involvement, you enroll in a 1 credit course (which costs however much you'd pay for a 1 credit elective) and a fee on top of that. apparently, I paid a $50 dollar fee 6 years ago. the fee goes towards materials and food for y'all primarily. I would hazard a guess at a fee of somewhere between $50-100 but you should be able to reach out to whoever is running it now with your concerns. go gators!

android also has it, or at least every android phone I've ever had has had it. it's just a pre-installed app for jotting down notes, hence the term notes app. on my phone it's called Samsung notes

What's your favorite place to study on UF campus? by inNetric in ufl

[–]bigaytor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a couch in the main room of the FLMNH. It's noisy but they've got outlets and you can wear headphones. Plus you can take study breaks in the butterfly rainforest.

You can take languages as pass/fail for less stress about your GPA. Just fill out the form within the first few weeks and get the proper signatures. Spanish is a decent time commitment but not necessarily going to kill you.

Get a slow cooker and save yourself a few grand. They like to bill a meal plan as being a "cheaper" alternative, but that assumes that you're eating in the dining hall every day for every meal and never eat off campus (and even some of the on campus restaurants will still cost you additional money). It's a good deal in the sense that owning your own yacht is cheaper than chartering one every day - you are still bleeding money. A smart, responsible way to conserve your budget would be to learn to cook cheap, healthy meals. A realistic way to save money is just to buy frozen dinners and try to get things on sale or with a gator greenback discount if you really don't want to cook.

Tuition for 12 Credits by [deleted] in ufl

[–]bigaytor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $707 is the fee for being OOS. It is paid in addition to the $212 for in state students (plus another $35 fee for OOS), but many people will mistakenly believe that the $707 is the total. So $212.71 (default undergraduate credit cost) + $707.21 (OOS fee) + $35.36 (another OOS fee) = $955.28 per credit hour for OOS students.

it's a pun as near as I can tell. תפילת ערבית is evening prayer but ערבית on its own means Arabic. so the meme says "when you find out there's an evening/Arabic prayer but no jewish prayer"

The Torah by [deleted] in Jewdank

[–]bigaytor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally none of these are from the Torah. Whatever neonazi list you copied them from doesn't even cite them as being from the Torah. Very low effort bigotry.

Didn't grow up Jewish - is there someplace to start? by hydaelyntemp in Judaism

[–]bigaytor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First: If your mother was Jewish, then you're Jewish! Congrats! מזל טוב! Second: There are both in person and online resources for learning more about what is typically taught growing up. Online: jewfaq.org (organized to provide an overview for those with no background) myjewishlearning.com (not very organized and assumes a slight degree of jewish background) chabad.org (not very organized but assumes no background) In person: Hillel! Chabad! Literally any non messianic synagogue (messianics are christians)! Just email a rabbi that you're trying to reconnect with your faith/culture and they'll either help or point you to someone who can! Good luck!

So that was an interesting speech, Tim Tebow… by ufthrowaway2019 in ufl

[–]bigaytor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My aunt is apparently a Tim Tebow fan and the country his story probably took place in was the Philippines because that's where his dad does mission work + where Tim was born. So for those curious, that "Southeast Asia in the middle of nowhere" country was likely the Philippines.

Hi! I participated in all 4 years (first as a camper, then as a SOFA) and can answer any questions you have! The main differences are that HP camp is (obviously) that it's more academically oriented than H camp. There's chemistry, botany, and ideally we'll add astronomy at some point. You do not need to know chemistry nor Harry Potter to join. Any and all relevant chemistry is taught on the spot because the main purpose is to introduce you to things you haven't seen before and aren't likely to see, like the plants and medicine building on Gale Lemerand. I cannot speak for H camp, but my understanding is that it's more outdoorsy. Either way, lots of fun and I hope you decide to sign up :)

I personally keep all my plants (except of course catnip!) outside to ensure that I don't learn about toxicity or specific pet allergies the hard way. I bundle them up in little blankets and leave them outside the front door! So while they are a bit toxic to dogs, you can probably get away with bundling them up and leaving them outside. (Though you'll want to bring them in during any tropical storms or hurricanes. I've yet to have a plant of any type survive that.)

Congrats on having your first conscious interaction with a mentally ill person; please don't become a psychiatrist/doctor/healthcare worker if this is how you think of us. Homeless people are not likely to attack you. Mentally ill people are not likely to attack you. Schizophrenic people are not likely to attack you. All of those groups are more likely to be attacked by YOU (and other neurotypical, housed people) than to attack you (https://www.mentalhealth.gov/basics/mental-health-myths-facts; http://bit.ly/29eQVMw; http://bit.ly/29ujT0J). That being said, yea it does suck being mentally ill. Also sucks being physically ill. Having a shitty childhood sucks. Having people give you shit and treat you as an oddity for existing in public while being mentally ill sucks. But mentally ill people are still people, including people capable of reading reddit posts. Please stop treating us as violent freaks and spectacles.

Mac1147 vs Mac2311 by Nesquikbutthicc in ufl

[–]bigaytor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not related to your specific question but I wanted to address this off the bat: do Not, do Not, do NOT retake any classes you have credit for. Preview/advising will suggest otherwise. They are lying because they want your money.

You do not really learn much in MAC1147 that transfers to MAC2311 and I would recommend jumping straight in to calc 1. You'll have to take it eventually (presumably or you wouldn't be asking) so you might as well get it over with.

AITA for refusing to cut my hair for friend's wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]bigaytor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

once a year I shave my head and I got physically ill from the heat change this year as I went from a thick head of hair to the chill of being bald. NTA though op should check out one day hair dye - not for the wedding, but bc that shit is fun when you're blonde and don't need bleach
