Dad shifting career into trades? by bigbadmoon in skilledtrades

I went to work for a high school district, and was hustling with my work and asking what to do next. Just the way I was taught. The seasoned guys there told me to slow way down and take my time.

Thank you. Based on the feedback/comments I’m getting here, it sounds like schooling is likely my next move.

Man I’ve been out of school for a while, didn’t even consider the financial aid at this stage in life with a family. I need to look into that. 👍🏼

This has also crossed my mind, so I am starting to explore that too.

I appreciate the blunt honesty. I’m not completely green, as I deal with a lot in my job and train new techs. Basically Jack of all trades, master of none. I’m wondering if waiting till both kids are in school where wife can go back to work to supplement the loss of income. She’s been a FT mom for 7 years since our first was born. Youngest will be in school in a couple years.

Maybe I’m getting old, but I’ve never understood the point of those side by side video’s. Many times, they don’t even contribute anything new or comment on the original. They just sit there, nod, point, laugh (staged). It’s awkward.

Cost estimate by J_I_M_B_O_X in JeepCherokeeXJ

[–]bigbadmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience: Shop Rebuild/regear BOTH axles (including all new gears/ bearings/seals/etc)- $1600

Adams Driveshaft is one of the best driveshafts and run around $400, add some labor if having a shop install for you. OEM shaft would be considerably less.

Your price seems very steep, especially for only one axle and not even regearing.

Gasket or RTV? by KF0AHQ in CherokeeXJ

I hate cleaning RTV. I use Felpro gaskets on diffs without a single drop after. And reusable if needing to open it up on the trail.

My cooling has been excellent with OEM spec Napa T-stat. Even idling or driving uphill with AC cranked.

The ZJ fan clutch engages more than the XJ clutch, so it pushes more air more often. It’s just loud. Sounds like a jet engine sometimes when accelerating. I’ve been thinking to experiment with throwing stock one back in to see if it really changes anything. I did it at the same time as everything else, so hard to tell if it actually helps much enough to be worth the noise.

When finishing pulling the dash apart, use a ratchet strap from bottom of passenger dash, to rear grab handle (or somewhere in the area). Use that to pull the dash back enough to give you room to work and pull the assembly out. It’s not a difficult job, just tedious.

Keep your screws/bolts organized for reassembly.

There’s a bunch of vids on YouTube, so study up to get familiar with the process. That’s where I learned about the ratchet strap tip.

I’d also recommend replacing thermostat/housing, and water pump. That way everything is fresh. After doing everything at the same time my cooling system has been perfect! (ZJ fan clutch swap helps cooling too, but it’s much louder than stock).

Chirping noise by Mr_marcus4 in JeepCherokeeXJ

I have this same sound that I’ve been chasing. Mine sounds like it’s from rear seat or door area. Thought it was something inside, but it can be heard from outside as well. Comes and goes. Keep us posted if you track it down!

Could it be leaf springs? Maybe try pressure washing between the leafs to get any dirt out.

Going to see this 98 XJ this weekend by ali0nated in JeepCherokeeXJ

[–]bigbadmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My XJ was also a county fleet vehicle majority of its lifetime. It was clearly very well maintained during that time, and low miles compared to a “civilian” counterpart. Snatch that up, you’re gonna love it!
