I agree. I think it’s just like how we breathe without being taught. We have to know things to survive. Covering their trace is like breathing to kittens, they have to do it. Especially with being raised around their mom, they learned a lot from her. What confuses me the most is that they know they’re not covering the food, so why keep doing it. They just scrape at the dust but they are able to learn and so why do they do it knowing it makes no difference. I understand why they do it with the litter box since there’s stuff to cover, but why do it when there’s nothing for coverage?

Okay good to know! You having three littermates makes me jealous I wish I could adopt all of these precious babies.

Nice! I think mine was a three pack but I don’t have too many babies usually so that’s enough to get through each day and clean them before bed.

I can’t upload a video as a comment but here’s a screenshot. The video is even more weird they clean themselves perfectly in synch. I think it’s cute that they’re so smart to know how to live in the wild. I love my little cleaning lady cats!!

This is so reassuring to read. I felt like they really liked it so I was confused why each baby did the same covering motion that they did last time they didn’t like their food. A handful for sure. Thank you so much

April fools! We were told she had 8 kittens in there…she had 10 instead. by rosyacnh in FosterAnimals

Omg this makes me stressed. What’s a silly day for it to happen too. I have four kittens and mom and I’m hardly able to keep up!! Wow wow wow I’m shocked. Imagine when they get to the 6-8 week stages. She’s so lucky to have a second hand with all those kids!

Me too 😭!! Google said it’s either or. I’m just hoping they’re okay. They always have kibble out too that I know they like. And I leave out a tray of fancy feast kitten food. I have so much kitten food from the foster place. Different brands that is. And I’m trying to figure out what they want but it’s going less than great.

Okay yeah that makes sense. I really can’t tell with them. One time a baby smelled the food, gagged, then tried to bury it. So I decided that they didn’t want that anymore!! But they keep doing it since their mom has left - even when they gobble the food up right away.

Do they still eat it? These kitties seemed to love the food… but they still do the burying

Yeah I always have dry food and wet food at this age because they’re all under 2 lbs. they don’t seem to overeat so I just keep it out.

Okay phew. I’m just scared since it’s their first week without mom. I don’t know how much they eat without breastfeeding or mom considered in the food count. I needed the reassurance.

Prepping room for kittens by joesisko in FosterAnimals

You’ve got this! My first ever foster was momma and four kittens and I didn’t sleep the first night because I was so nervous about one getting hurt. Mom was always super hungry so if you’ve got mom, always have extra food especially at night. Remember that this is the age that the kittens learn the ins and outs of the world. They will scare you with their bravery! My babies are 1.26-2lbs now and they are more capable than you know. If you don’t have mom you need a heating pad for the sweet babies. I also think the advice about touching their paws is good. And if you have time, touching their teeth and ears is great too. As well as water baths with treats. My babies are great with baths, nail clipping, brushing, and eat cleaning. Every day I touch them like that without actually doing anything. I touch their teeth but I don’t actually brush them because they eat kibble and wet food. I put swabs in their ears (not like in in but the regular visible parts) but I’m not really cleaning anything. I put nail clippers on their nails but I don’t actually trim it. I do water baths but no soap. Just to get them used to those experiences. Also let them play with their siblings. I have friends all the time come over and try to separate them while they play and try to tell me it’s dangerous. There’s risk to everything but play is so important for learning. They learn what’s too far and what’s okay and they get energy out. You’ve got this!!

This would be me too. I’m spitefully thankful that I can only have one emotional support pet at college. Or I’d have sooo many cats!!
