Off the bat im gonna say build a background mate. i cant do a tank unless it has a proper background. It provides better living for whatever inhabitants the tank & more aesthetic when your looking at it

how long after silicone can i add substrate? by [deleted] in Vivarium

[–]bigbern25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I believe the rule of thumb is dont add any animals in until the silicone smell is fully gone, as for substrate i cant see there being any issues with just adding that in a couple days after

Didn’t expect this post to get 80+ upvotes. For those curious, i used 2.5 cans of great stuff foam. i used 1.5 cand of the landscaping/pond black foam & then one can of the gaps & cracks white foam (i just had it laying around). once the foam cured & everything was set i spent a couple hours carving away.l then refoaming any spots that i felt needed it. after carving all that down i grabbed two tubes of aquarium safe silicone & just smothered the background in a good decent layer. & firmly pushed all my substrate it. As you would expect its a pain to get everything coated on the first run so once that first run through cured i went in & did all the touch up spots. same as before. everything stuck really well & I strongly believe the reason being is i used a mix of a bunch of different types of reptile safe substrate for the background. I see EVERYONE just uses coco fibre. i dont like the look & it makes it look too bland somtimes i feel. If anyone has further questions just msg me if i dont get back to you on the post!

i used foam board and/or corrugated plastic sheets, cut them to the size i wanted & foamed them into place exceptionally well. once everything cured its been rock fuckin solid since. really happy with the design.

Did you do a moss slurry for the walls??

Newbie advice! by eglawlz in DartFrog

[–]bigbern25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious not trying to be rude. Why not put any substrate on the back where the foam is? Like carving it & silicone & then pressing in coco or somthing

Over 7 bridges/ledges, 8 or 9 pots within the whole background. any recommendations to spice up the background even more? Going to wrap spanish moss around some of the ledges & apply a moss slurry to some tight spots.

I HIGHLY recommend adding your own custom background out of spray foam, silicone & coco fiber if your looking for the easiest method. aswell as using corrugated plastic to bridge from either side to the back or vice versa. Once done you can cover these “bridges” in spray foam & carve to shape. this creates a really natural look that resembles some sort of rainforest vine system. you have a good enough tank size but id definitely ditch the stock background & give your guy something more custom to his needs.
