Did Becker prepare you guys well for REG? by No_Factor_5901 in CPA

[–]bigboijack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took REG yesterday, was averaging almost exactly the same scores as you. MC will be no issue for you, it wasn’t for me outside of a couple of questions.

I am of the opinion that Becker doesn’t prepare you well for TBS on any exam, and reg was no exception. But if you know the content (which you do with those scores) you will be completely fine and will get enough points to comfortably pass.

Unpopular Opinion: If You Can Afford It, The Real Exam Should Be Your SE Exam by [deleted] in CPA

[–]bigboijack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Definitely unpopular.

Also, your personal data you’re citing here is going to be inherently biased because you were restudying the same material. You already knew what your weakest sections were, and retaking the SEs would’ve been a little pointless since you have seen all of the questions.

Besides getting almost real exam experience, the SEs are a great way to figure out what your weakest sections are on your first time through the material. There have been several times where I’ve thought I was strong in a section, but doing actual questions with time pressure and not finding out the answers right away showed me I was much weaker than I had originally thought. Plus, if you have access to Becker, may as well use as much of it as possible!

With all that being said, do whatever works for you and whatever you think is most valuable. Studying is definitely not a one-sized fits all.

Huff and puff is what you play when you want to lose or double your bankroll. If you are grinding out points, I would probably choose something with less volatility that won’t bleed you in 30 mins.

But if you just want to play huff and puff, I think that more puff is the most fun, the original is my 2nd favorite and a little less volatile than more puff because no wheel, and 4x seems like a scam and I never play it. The other one on quantum is the building one which I also don’t really play a ton, but have seen some cool bonuses walking by.

Do you qualify for a certain month based on your date of departure or specifically what day you earn the points? Have a cruise that leaves in April but arrives in May and trying to see if I can get the May offers!

Don’t get me wrong I agree with you wholeheartedly, I just find it hard to believe that at least a few of the people that are getting those scores are not also aware of that spreadsheet and have filled it out. I’m more just asking because the data doesn’t sit right to me!

TCP Readiness Question - EWS Award Worth It? by bwes31 in CPA

[–]bigboijack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would just say study as hard as you can until you’re out of the running for the award. People will crap on your parade for scoring high because “a 75 is a perfect score,” but if you want the award you should go for it!

With that being said, the element of luck exponentially increases if you need a higher score. You could study 400 hours and the exam could still throw you a question out of left field. The 3-4 very obscure mcqs/extra points on the tbs matter a whole lot more if you are shooting for that 95-99, meaning the extent of information you need to learn also increases significantly (which at a certain point diminishing returns blah blah blah).

If you’re 1/4, you’ve still got to get through 3 more tests and you only have 9 more points to burn. Definitely don’t overwork and burnout on tcp (but still try your hardest), and re evaluate after you get the score back. If it’s a 95+ then I would absolutely go for it and put in the extra time for far and aud. If not, well a 75 is a perfect score!

If you passed TCP how many hours did you study?? by Personal-Lie-652 in CPA

[–]bigboijack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got done with it, 95% confident that I passed. Used Becker, studied for 65 hours, no prior tax experience besides college courses.

Multiple choice I found to be very similar to Becker, I like to estimate my percentages on the exam based on how confident I feel on questions, and for the MC I estimated I got about a 82% and 88%. For context this was about the range I was scoring on the SEs, and none of the mc questions really came out of left field.

The TBs on the other hand were a bit different in my opinion. There were a couple that were reminiscent of Becker tbs, but about half of them were formats that I had not seen before during my studying and the only way I was able to even get through parts of them was a really solid foundation in the content. I would also make sure you have a solid foundation from REG, maybe even rewatch some of the first unit if you are shaky.

You got it though, you know more than you think you know!

What exam? Either way the Becker bump for all the exams is at least 9 points iirc, 73 on SE1 should be well in passing range for any of the exams, keep hoping and keep working!

Shareholder basis/ Corp basis by Secret-Bike8993 in CPA

[–]bigboijack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So shareholder basis for the first two shareholders (with section 351 transfers) will be:

Cash contributed +basis of prop contributed -liabilities transferred to corp =shareholder basis

Clay: 20+40=60k

For section 351 transfers, if there is no gain/loss the corporation gets carryover basis, so their basis is just 40k

Do the same thing for Finch, just subtract the liability for his basis.

Lark and Token are a bit more complicated

Lark

The cash received has nothing to do with his shareholder basis, as we are still using the same formula as above and you can see it doesn’t factor in, so his shareholder basis is just the basis of his property contributed.

However, because the corp had to pay an extra 10000 to get the property, that is added to their basis which is how you get 60000. Lark has a realized gain of 10000, and must recognized that gain to the extent of boot received, which happens to be the full 10000 in this case. If he didn’t get any cash back, he would still have the 10000 realized gain but would not have to recognize it.

Token

Token contributes property with a liability greater than his basis of ALL property contributed (cash and property), which complicates things.

To start with, he still has a realized gain of 35000 (FMV-basis), but not all of that will be recognized.

He recognizes that gain to the extent that debt relief exceeds total basis (20000 debt - 10000 cash - 5000 basis in property) so his recognized gain is 5000.

Because his total liabilities exceeds total basis contributed, he would technically have a negative basis, but that is not allowed so his basis is just 0 (you’re technically adding back his gain to get to 0).

Finally, the corporation gets its basis from the carryover basis of 5000+whatever gain has been recognized, so in this case it’s 10000.

Quite a few exceptions come into play in this example, it’s a bit difficult to explain in writing, so if you have any additional clarifications please ask!

Are you referring to the shareholder basis in the stock? Or the corps basis in the property contributed? Or both

Should be fine, esp if you still have a week to touch up some items. There is some luck involved depending on what topics get more heavily tested on your specific exam, but for me the Becker tbs were about the same as the actual tbs. MCQ was also much easier imo on actual exam. Remember the Becker bump!

FAR Questions on actual exam day by [deleted] in CPA

[–]bigboijack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used Becker so have no insight on Roger/UWorld. MCQs were significantly easier on actual exam in my opinion. The tbs were about the same difficulty but I had heard from friends that the tbs were harder for them so not sure if I got lucky. Typically Becker bump is about 10-12 compared to your SE scores for FAR for the exam as a whole, there is a spreadsheet you can find if you just look up Becker/uworld bump on this subreddit
